This is a much faster start for N.C. State than many expected. A new coaching staff – most of them from Boston College – is trying to rebuild a program after a few years of mediocrity (or worse) in the ultra-competitive ACC.
Coaches with a lot more flash, guys like Butch Davis, Steve Spurrier, Urban Meyer, and Bobby Bowden are all recruiting the state. O’Brien and recruiting coordinator Jerry Petercuskie don’t seem to care, and they are having great success on the recruiting trail.
I’ll be the first to admit – I didn’t expect Coach O’Brien to make his first real splash on the recruiting front. I figured he would do a good job evaluating talent and getting the ship back on course with better discipline and motivation – but that the recruiting would have to follow the first few years of groundwork and better on-field product. As a Wolfpack fan, there’s no way you could expect a better start than what TOB has provided.

Everything I read from the recent kids committed to going to NCSU sounds good. The staff has done a good job of selling the school as a great place for a student athlete. I think some kids realize that a good education will help them in the long run.

^from what I gather, those kids that realize the value of education are the kids that TOB wants on his squad.

While it is great that we have signed several outstanding players, I will withhold judgement until we sign no fewer than 6 high caliber offensive lineman. Horrific performance out of that position (moreso than the quarterback) was the demise of Amato.

I’ve been shocked by his early recruiting success. Like you BJD – I thought that TOB would specialize in identifying hidden talent. I didn’t know he’d fair so well w/ blue chip prospects. Hopefully, he’ll continue to exceed my expectations – one thing is certain, disciplined or not, this year may be a tough one.

TOB’s success with “name” recruits thus far is as good as could be imagined, while the media, at least, seems to have overestimated the star appeal of Butch Davis with the current crop of players. NC State couldn’t have asked for a much better scenario than that and hopefully it will continue to play out this way.
While I’m mildly surprised at the high profile recruits that TOB has landed, I have always been skeptical that Davis would have big name recognition with 17-18 year olds. He’s been a nonfactor for 7 years, which is long enough for a rising senior in high school to have no idea who he is, and he is at UNC. The combination of Davis and UNC just isn’t as glistening as the media seems to want to make it.

the reference to the lack of quality o-line recruits by dogbreath causes me to reflect on a time when i was coaching high school ball in nc—we had a guy who was being recruited by unc and ncsu—more so by unc—robbie caldwell was at unc at the time—he advised us that the staff there was in favor of taking more d-line recruits and shifting the ones that didn’t cut it on that side of the ball to o-line—hence—his chances of bringing in who he wanted on the o-line were limited—we might have suffered some of the same here during chuck’s tenure—given his affinity for the defensive side of the ball—nonetheless—the point is well made—our offensive problems will continue to persist until we stabilize at the line of scrimmage—on both sides of the ball—go pack
