Our friends at RAWFS have a really nice article up with a number of links covering the spring football practices. Alpha touches on several things that perfectly matches something that I’m currently working on. If you’ve been wondering why RAWFS hasn’t been putting up entries with their normal frequency, here is a comment lifted from earlier this week:

Red and White is not dead, though I may have been (try hitting a stationary object at 47.5 MPH) were it not for the grace of God. It’s taken me a lot longer than I would like to get the blog moving again. I totalled a car in February and have had two sinus and facial reconstruction surgeries in the meantime, and let me tell you that that kind of surgery sucks. To this day I am still getting crushing sinus headaches as everything heals but I refuse to take any more narcotics to alleviate the pain. Thankfully that’s becoming more rare.

First of all, I’m sure that I speak for all State fans when I say how glad we are that Alpha is recovering and doing better. Secondly, I wish that we had known about the accident earlier….even if all I could do was to pray and send a get-well card.

It’s good to you have back and blogging, even if you’re not at full-speed just yet. Here’s a short piece of advice: don’t scrimp on the narcotics…they’ve got more where those came from. 😉

    I cruise RAWFS and assumed Alpha had realized how much work it was to keep going.

    I’ve had that sinus surgery – it’s brutal. Glad to hear you’re on the road to recovery.

    Not really sure where to put this comment so I’ll just stick it here.

    There was a great piece on the front of the N&O sports page this morning about TOB and some of the team going to the Raleigh Rescue Mission.
    The print edition has some good pictures of players serving lunch at the Mission. Many kudos to TOB for getting involved in this activity and to whomever alerted the N&O and got front (sports) page coverage. I do wonder if Mrs. Myers arranged the press coverage or if TOB and his staff have already figured out that we have no functional sports marketing dept. and have taken this on themselves.

    Regardless, a big tip of the hat to TOB for getting the program more involved in the community – this really helps with the public perception of the program and can’t hurt with perceptions of parents as far as our priorities. I suspect that many of our targets and their parents will end up seeing that article in one form or another.

    Still lots of heresay all around. Wish they would release the tape. I am sure as soon as they can the N&O and others will request the tape, even by legal means if they have to. I have heard different accounts of what happened much like what has been posted. I too heard Harris would not produce his drivers license and he would not get out of the car. I see both sides you do what a policeman asks you to do within reason. A policeman stops someone and they refuse to get out of the car, I don’t know what I would do. Pepper spraying Harris certainly seems overzealous. Judges seem to be upholding your constitutional right to resist a wrongful accusation/arrest more and more although I don’t know how that would apply to getting stopped for a traffic ticket. Thing that concerns me the most is that I have not seen where the NCSU administration such as Fowler himself has issued any type of statement supporting Harris. Makes me wonder if Harris felt he had to file a compliant in order to protect his job.

    Great to see TOB starting to fulfill his mission statement when he took the job. “Be champions on the football field, in the classroom and in the community”. Its neat.

    I don’t know about you guys, but this seems like an awesome time to be a pack backer! I’m loving this.

    Seaking of Amato, did anyone see the 6 pack on sportscenter last night. The question was what effect is chuck having on the Florida State defense, and the “expert” said that Chuck was “installing a sense of discipline in the FSU D.”

    Funny how that is his job in FSU when he could not do it here.

    We played some good D under Amato. Do doubt he knows defense. He was not an offensive mind. I have no doubt he will be a big positive at FSU and helping their defense.

    It seems to me that pepper spray is supposed to be used to subdue a physically aggressive person. Doesn’t that make sense? A guy is coming at you, you don’t want to shoot him, so you subdue him with pepper spray. Fine.

    Now, even if someone refuses to get out of his car, how does pepper spray even enter into the eqaution? Where’s the physical aggression, the threat of physical harm?

    There are SEVERAL legit reasons to refuse a cop’s order to get out of your car. For example, if you’re a single female pulled over on a dark street you can legally request to pull ahead to a lit public place before getting out. Similarly, if you initially pull over on a fast street with a narrow shoulder, or on a dangerous curve then you can legally request to pull ahead to the first “safe” place available.

    Now, if coach Harris felt that a cop was already overly aggressive, maybe intimidated by his size, it seems VERY REASONABLE to ask that other officers be present before getting out of his car. I mean, he’s a big dude, and that fact alone could get an already ansy cop to act rashly. So you ask for other officers to come to the scene, then you wait until they arrive, and then proceed in a calm manner. Makes sense to me.

    Here’s my question: If coach Harris asked to remain in his car unitl other officers arrived, did this cop honor that request? If he did, then he must peppered sprayed coach with other cops right beside him on the scene? That doesn’t make sense. Or he chose to pepper spray coach Harris BEFORE other officers arrived? Why? Wouldn’t they both just be waiting for these other officers to arrive before proceeding? It HAS to be one of these two options, and NIETHER one has the officer involved acting in a responsible, sensible manner.
