The Duke Flop

By:   Mar 19, 2007

General, NCS Basketball

This has been making its way around the internet. One of the SEC blogs had a title similar to “This is why people hate Duke”. Of course, we’ve already used that title and therefore cannot repeat it.

  4. skywalkerdt Says:

  5. redfred2 Says:

    I think it was faulus.

    or phaulus, either one

Another example of the Internet and YouTube helping highlight a problem in college basketball. Enough of this kind of stuff and Duke won’t be able to get away with so many flops, because even the dullest of refs will be wise to it.

OK, so that was rabid optimism there. Sorry.

  8. CaptainCraptacular Says:

Whats really sad: This wasn’t the only flop Duke tried to pull in that game. There were several, of which the video is the worst. But its pathetic what they try to get away with. I’d be embarrassed to be a Duke fan.

  9. Redblogger Says:

    LOL That is really funny.

  10. WolfPup35 Says:

If the game had been in Durham, they would have got the call!
That is CLEARLY a Cameron Charge!

The fans of the Devils should get used to what they saw this year, unless every other team in the nation comes down with a severe case of the shits right before game time!!

The Dook dynasty is crumbling, and I love it!

  11. skywalkerdt Says:

its still coach k, so watch what you ask for, how many mcd’s are arriving to durham next year?

still, the moment I learned to hate Duke (I liked watching the Grant Hill’s and Tony Lang’s I’ll admit)- A few years back I was there for what I believe was Duke’s first game at the then ESA to witness Shane Battier grab Kenny Inge’s forearms on a rebound, throw Kenny to the floor and then fuss at the ref for calling a foul instead of a jump ball!!! Shane never touched the ball!

  12. WolfPup35 Says:

Yet another example of Dook players belief that they have “Manifest Destiny” in the ACC!

  13. redfred2 Says:

I may be way wrong, but it was Dean Smith who first took advantage of the charge rule years and years ago with players like George Karl and Dudley Bradley to name a few. Before that time it was a question of judgement on the defensive players part and if the offensive had the lane and the advantage, the defense had better get out of the way or be called for the foul.

I could on with a list a mile long but that is just one of the many reasons that the Duke Blue Devils with never, ever overtake the heels on my list of the most hated BB programs on the planet.

have you guys ever seen those goats that fall over when you scare them?

  15. noah Says:

    Fainting goats! ha!

  16. packpigskinfan23 Says:

hahahaha… this thread has just become a classic.

  17. class of 74 Says:

Were those goats in a pasture or was that a Duke practice session on film?

rf2—smith was the originator—let you have the baseline—and—once you were in the air he’d have the guard drop down and run underneath you—ruined many a basketball player from playing sound defense in my estimation—when i used to coach high school basketball i had more than one conversation with the head coach when we would practice ‘taking charges’—i always asked him—why don’t we practice playing defense and defend the goal for once?—guess that’s why i coach football now—re: the heels vs. dook?—no contest—the heels will always be the evil empire

  19. TomA Says:

As much as everyone talks about the Duke Flopping Syndrome at no time was it as bad as when Dean was coaching UNX. Anyone else remember the classic setup where two or three UNX players would trap an opposing player and when the player would make any movement towrad the Carolina players ALL OF THEM would fall down like a grenade had been tossed at them! So really they are continuing a tradition started by the light blue!

  20. redfred2 Says:

I hadn’t checked back on this thread in a while, but you got it there beowulf, that’s exactly what I was talking about!!! Thanks for the video evidence.

I still think it is one of the worst abuses to the rules that was ever executed by a coach. But, that and the four corners are where carolina “pride” originated.

  21. redfred2 Says:

Yep, about the most pansy way to get a turnover ever conceived. But that was ol’ Dean, abuse the rules whenever possible.
