Interesting Pack Gossip From Annapolis Paper
Here’s some Pack-related stuff from this article regarding Paul Johnson’s extension to stay at Navy. Key excerpt:
Johnson had been considered a leading candidate to replace Chuck Amato at N.C. State. Sources told The Capital that Chuck Neinas, a coaching headhunter working on behalf of the Wolfpack, contacted Johnson on Sunday to gauge his interest in the job.
According to those same sources, Johnson never heard directly from athletic officials at N.C. State and never received a formal offer from the school. That despite the fact two powerful boosters – Wendell Murphy and Bobby Purcell – wanted Johnson instead of O’Brien.
Murphy, a pig farmer from Rose Hill, N.C., is the single-largest individual contributor to N.C. State football. The Murphy Center football team building is named in his honor. Purcell is the current head of the Wolfpack Club and is rumored to be in line to replace Lee Fowler as N.C. State athletic director.
Very interesting, to say the least.

I would really like to know the content of the conversation between Neinas and Johnson.
The Chancellor got his man, plain and simple. Johnson would have gotten a formal offer if and only if O’Bie passed.
Yeah, somebody got their man. At least there is a rumor Bobby Purcell will replace Foulup.
That is very interesting, what I want to know is where/who Bill Wagner’s sources are. Does SFN have any scoop on the administrations current attitude towards Lee Fowler? This is once again the media doing what they love to do best, bash on anything NC State or Wolfpack related. Just check out the horrible article in today’s News & Record, it wouldn’t bother me so much if Ed Hardin could at least learn to write coherently. On another note, P Rivers knew about this “hire” (its not official yet) very early, do you think the Wolfpack club went calling him for money? (Does this mean pretty soon we will see the P River indoor field & training facility!!!)
“At least there is a rumor Bobby Purcell will replace Foulup.”
Oh Puuuuuuuuuuuuuullllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
“Does this mean pretty soon we will see the P River …”
Care to rephrase that.
Oh dear, I should have said Rivers, and more over P river does sound a little nasty. What I meant was the “Philip River’s Practice Facility” It would be nice to see an indoor practice field in his name after a few years, where they would put it……. now thats a whole other story
pretty interesting article, only wish I knew why Johnson wasn’t the right guy if Mr. Murphy wanted him.
Classic Foulup.
Cancel the Jimbo interview, and don’t contact Johnson.
Very interesting article. Not sure what sources were used, but I am hoping they are solid since there was a mention of Purcell replacing Jed.
Maybe the choice of TOB over PJ in spite of Murphy’s/Purcell’s recommendation will be the last straw.
One can hope anyway…

Isn’t the “lower” of the 3 practice fields (closest to Blue Ridge) the one that has always been planned as the site of the eventual indoor practice facility?
I would like BP as AD!
I dunno, I think we got the best guy. Navy just raised PJ’s salary to 1.7M. I don’t care how good folks say he is…he’s not worth 1.7M right now. I think we could have easily gotten Calipari’d if we’d made him an offer.
The way I read the article, Purcell is rumored to be in line to replace Folwer as AD “some time in the future.” I think that has been rumored for several years. I don’t know if that is the “interesting” part you referenced or if it was the fact that Fowler basically went against two significant contributors to Wolfpack athletics in making TOB his choice.
Word is Bama may up PJ’s salary from Navy’s offer!
Reading Ed Hardin’s column, I find it amazing how the press somehow confuses its own desire for a huge backlash of unhappiness on the part of Pack fans twith reality. Is everyone thrilled? Probably not. Is everyone pissed? Of course not. Not unless you read the sports page. Just don’t believe everything you read.
“Navy just raised PJ’s salary to 1.7M”
So does that make Johnson the highest paid government employee?
if that really is the gospel, then i’m for once in the world glad Foulup was our AD at the time, if we would have taken Paul “Small” Johnson over Tom O’Brien it would have been a disaster…
Purcell > Fowler……bring it on!
On the edge of my seat, still waiting for the white smoke out of the chimney. TOB will be a good coach. Just the discipline factor alone might get 5-6 more wins out of the talent already assembled. Enough second guessing, lets get behind Coach O’Brien and wish him well. GO PACK!!!!
“murphy is a pig farmer from Rose Hill, NC”– when do you think the last time Murphy touched an f-in pig was??? this guy is a douche bag. he is just trying to make it sound like all people do in NC is rastle pigs. Granted Murphy should not and i am sure is not ashamed of how he made/makes his money, this guy is just trying to portray NC STAte in a neg light.
PURCELL FOR AD>>>>> would love that. Bobby is the man, and he is A FAN!!!! he knows al we want is to do well in sports and not to settle for mediocrity. Go BOBBY
Rod backed out at Bama, so there’s a chance Johnson ends up there. WVU never could’ve/would’ve paid the money to get him away from Navy.
Bobby Purcell was up for AD after Les left…and MAF passed him over for Fowler (and some of you seem to think she was God’s gift to NCSU!?!). It was a power play by MAF, she wanted someone she could control, not the boosters. Oblinger seems much more hands off about athletics, and coupled with the disaster that Fowler has been, I don’t know if they can tell him no again. Besides, if we don’t make him AD, someone else will.
I agree packbackr, “Wendell Murphy a hog slop farmer from the backwoods of North Carolina.” The media will never get it.
pj would have been ok. ob1 will be great! the ad will continue to be wendell “always follow the money trail” murphy, no matter what he looks like in the athletic directory. also, after the red shoes, sunglasses at night, and embarassing post-game comments, finally we get to see how the tarholes hold up to the hype of a $2M big-name coach now, while we can silently build around a solid, winning coach that’s already being labeled mediocre by some!
