Despite the holidays, we’ve posted a ton of stuff to the site in recent days…so, if you haven’t been visiting a lot then we ask that you don’t overlook some of our entries like the ACC expansion pieces and our comprehensive “BC fans” piece.
===> We obviously followed the Wolfpack’s win over Western Carolina closely. (See link) Pack Pride has a lot of links in their Web Run, including a link to Andrew Jones’ report card that includes the following grade on intangibles:

Larry Hunter’s return to Raleigh was SIGNIFICANTLY closer than the score indicates.
JJ Hickson shot 10 of 11 from the floor en route to scoring 33 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, and blocking 3 shots to lead NC State to a come from behind victory over another directional school in the state of North Carolina. Additionally - Brandon Costner played much better than he has recently; Javi Gonzalez might as well be invisible and was overshadowed by the defensive and play making efforts of Marques Johnson. FWIW, Johnson played 23 minutes and Gonzalez logged 17.

N&O Story
GoPack’s Tim Peeler Remembers Tab Thacker
A mountain of a man, the 1984 NCAA heavyweight champion stood 6-5 and weighed roughly 450 pounds. I say “roughly” because there were only a couple of places where Thacker could weigh-in, and he usually just waited until the NCAA wrestling championships every year to step on the scales.
As a junior, Thacker weighed in at 410 pounds. He worked hard on getting in condition for his senior year, because he was so driven to win a national championship. He was disappointed at having finished eighth as a freshman and sixth as a sophomore and junior. So he toned himself up, turning his ham-sized arms into muscle.

I fear the day that I am going to have to search our archives for the following quote from today’s Charlotte Observer in regards to the UNC-Nevada game last night. But, I just have a feeling and didn’t want to ignore this opportunity.
Referees aren’t enforcing the NCAA’s “bench decorum” mandate designed to punish angry coaches with technical fouls.
Roy Williams’ tirade over an inexplicable missed basket interference call warranted a technical under the new rules, but referee Karl Hess allowed him to protest.

None of the basketball was particularly artful, and it would be a grave mistake to pronounce that the 2007-08 Wolfpack has turned the corner. However, the season is back on track, after surviving a grueling stretch of 3 games in 6 days (with Christmas in the middle). NC State had to win all three games, and win them they did. Assuming no catastrophic loss to Western Carolina, Presbyterian, or NC Central, State will enter ACC play at 11-3, which is fairly solid ground. Even more importantly, NC State has 2 quality non-home wins (Villanova and Seton Hall) for its NCAAT resume, to balance out the 2 inexcusable losses.

The theme that we have attached to basketball this past week is one of major importance for NC State. Sunday night’s win over Cincinnati basically allowed the Wolfpack to hold serve while waiting for tonight’s opportunity to strengthen our NCAA Tournament resume’ with a road game at (RPI #25) Seton Hall.
Over the last two games against Davidson and Cinicinnati, a more energized Wolfpack team showed great significant improvement as point guard Farnold Degand became more effective on both offense and defense while helping the Pack with effective three point shooting when the open shot was available (8 of 16 for the year). But, Degand’s season ending knee injury has thrown water on our parade and now we don’t necessarily know what to expect when the Pack takes the court.

Merry Christmas, Wolfpack style.
NC State head men’s basketball coach Sidney Lowe has announced that sophomore point guard Farnold Degand will miss the remainder of the 2007-08 season after tearing his ACL last night in the win over Cincinnati. Degand will undergo surgery at a later date.

Box Score |Recap|
VERY NICE and BIG win tonight as the Wolfpack keeps scraping back to ‘par’ after the UNCO and ECU losses. You can see the importance of tonight’s game by clicking here.
* NC State wins three in a row and is now 2-0 against the Big East for the season.
* State scores over 80 points for the first time all season! as Costner, Fells, Grant and Hickson all hit double figures (and Degand had 9 before getting injured)

We discussed the importance of the remainder of the Wolfpack’s non-conference in this great entry that you should read if you haven’t.
In the piece we discuss that the Pack has an opportunity to run the table against a nice stretch of six opponents that would produce an 11-3 record (and a Top 50 RPI) heading into ACC play. (I projected 11-3 as the most likely scenario before the season began; of course I projected losses to different teams than we
