N.C. State’s David Amerson out to prove to NFL teams he’s better than ’12

    #1

INDIANAPOLIS N.C. State cornerback David Amerson admitted he spent last season chasing the NCAA interceptions record.

And he ended up chasing opposing receivers – from behind.

After breaking the ACC record with 13 interceptions in 2011, Amerson was rated the No. 1 cornerback in the draft and among the best players overall. But Amerson’s stock tumbled after he was torched repeatedly in 2012.

He said Sunday he had the wrong approach last season and will try to convince scouts and general managers he can still cover.

“They’ll just have to go back to the film. I can’t change anything,” Amerson said at the scouting combine. “Hopefully they see my good plays outweigh my bad.”

We all knew that. I do think Amerson has really good size and ball skills.

I'll admit up front that I don't know the young man personally, but I can't help but think this admission reinforces the notion of so many of today's young premium athletes playing exclusively "for the next level" to the detriment of the team as a whole. One wonders if a different attitude might have yielded different results for the team on the field.

Even though I knew that to be true anyway, this article and Amerson's quotes in that article make me like him less.

Pulled out the Nov. 12 "Wolfpacker" and reviewed the 10 questions asked to each player. Lo, de Thaey, Purvis, Vandy, and TJ all responded "David Amerson" to the question "What athlete at NC State do you enjoy watching." I recall reading this in November and thinking to myself "that's not good." Looks like the bball team has been "Amersonized".

Amerson won't be the first interception-hawk and there are plenty of teams who bring in these types of players.

Ehh... I'd contend that there's no linkage here. I also suspect that a lot of the basketball player (particularly TDT and Vandy) know very little about football. The freshman just know that Amerson was a NC State All American. For all we know, they may know him personally and like him. People always like watching their friends.

Personally, I blame the coaches as much as Amerson. If they couldn't tell this was happening and didn't bench him, then they were even worse than we thought. Heck, I had hoped it was just due to lack of a pass rush or something that they were coaching schematically.

I wish Amerson the best of luck in the pros. It'd be nice to have another NFL player do well who was from NC State.

So far Amerson is the fastest DB in the 40 at 4.38. That's pretty damn quick. We'll see how he does elsewhere.

I'll be mildly surprised if he becomes a successful corner in the NFL. Perhaps with better coaching. Mike Reed was awful, if you judge him based on results.

I think it will be a competition between Amerson and Honey Badger in the NFL to see who was the biggest fluke in the 2011 college football season.

If speed isnt the issue, someone tell me why every reciever this year made him look like he was 45 years old??

                        Well...

I tried to explain what the flaws were before the season even started. His coverage style is/was one of shade and bait.

Teams picked it up, and refused to play Homie's game.

^^^Which is exactly why he'll be moved to Free Safety when he gets to the NFL. He could be a beast at the safety position.

EDIT: If he learns how to wrap up.

No knock gopack10...you've been hooked up to a vine for a reason. Good. Really.

In all honesty, I see Amerson on the other side of the ball before he skates and reads as a free safety.

Now...tell us what you hear about Bishop.

Can someone translate this for me? I'm not sure if he's criticizing my assessment or agreeing with it. Either way Cowdog, I can see both sides of the argument on Amerson. I think his ball hawk mentality would serve him well as a safety in the NFL but I could see where people look at what he did this past season and disagree. Others are probably more well-versed in NFL prospect assessments than I am so I could be wrong but that's just my two cents.

CD, is that an indictment of Amerson's secondary skills/instincts or is it a knock on the upcoming draft's WR prospects?

No...I agree with your assessment, but I also think that the boy may be suited more to a wideout slot.

Rotowire's latest mock draft had Amerson going to the Panthers in Round 3 or 4. LOL, Jerry doesn't draft Wolfpackers. But since he kind of screwed NC State over last year...

Wolff has been a "workout warrior" at the combine. Maybe he goes in Round 4-6. I don't think Bishop is even there.

That's a good point, CD. Full use of his assets while eliminating his liabilities. But given the constant need for good DB's, I can't imagine a team taking him and not putting him on the D side initially. A move to the offense, I would think, could only be preceded by a failing on the D. That is unless he gets lucky and winds up with a coach who's not stuck to the mold. Now that I think about it, New England might just be the best fit for him.

CowDog: You're right about Amerson laying off and playing for the pick. He did that the previous year also.

There was something different this year though and I don't just think it was what the opponents did. Opponents had enough film midway through the season last year to spot that, and Amerson had some good games down the stretch.

This year it seemingly was either that:
                                  - Amerson laid off a larger percentage of plays trying to force a throw his way.
                                  - There was less help over the top.
                                  - Opposing QBs had more time to throw.
                                  - We weren't in as favorable down and distance due to an inability to stop the run.

Personally, I think it was all four. If it were just item #1, then the coaches should have just benched him.

With respect to Reed, do you judge him on how the secondary got torched under him for several years? Do you judge him on the fact that he's got two guys about to get drafted out of the same backfield off of a middling defense? How do you judge him in the context of working under Archer schematically?

I tend to think he is at least decent or Clemson wouldn't have picked him up. Of course that could have just been for recruiting as that is Dabo's style.

Well, one things for sure..Jerry hasn't been afraid to try "different positions" and sometimes is stubborn about it, i.e. , the "Happy Appy" QB.

But, I've been shocked before with College D backs that did not look "up to NFL snuff" making it. But those that I can count on one hand have been exceptionally driven. I never thought Captain Munnerlyn made sense, but he's done pretty good although he still has some soft spots. But he's a very driven small Dback, but he's not afraid to hit!
