ESPN: What we learned in Tampa

I’m going to tease with Bomani Jones’ second lesson first before delving into the real meat of this piece. Here is that second lesson:

The nation should be glad NC State didn’t make the NCAAs.”

Jones praises NC State and Sidney Lowe highly here:

My goodness, that team looked good. This wasn’t a charming Cinderella that got all the right breaks. This was a dangerous team.

The last thing anyone wants to face in the NCAA Tournament is a squad that has good athletes, two strong big men, a few capable ball handlers and a strong half-court game. After watching this team for four days, I couldn’t help but wonder how things would have been different if Engin Atsur, the player Gavin Grant referred to as their “general,” hadn’t missed 12 games with a bad hammy.

Also, consider what Grant said their approach was before the Duke game: “Don’t let anybody punk you.” A team with someone bold enough to say that from the dais of a postgame media session is a team to be reckoned with.

That’s great press, and Jones “got” it. Lowe’s team isn’t going to back down from a challenge. Lowe’s philosophy seems to be that shared by Patton and Frederick the Great: L’audace, l’audace, toujours l’audace! (Audacity, audacity, always audacity!) The red blazer is audacious. The up-tempo style is audacious. The declaration that the only goal for a 10th-seeded team is the championship or bust is audacious.

I’d like to take an aside and quote my favorite writer on Lowe’s audacity back when he was very sick with the flu and still donning the red blazer for a trip to Chapel Hill, because I think he was right in pointing out the foundation being laid for that leave-nothing-on-the-floor, 4-day effort that we saw this weekend and that Jones is praising now:

I want to underscore SFN’s point about Sid wearing the red jacket again. That’s just ballsy. It was ballsy enough at home. … Here Coach Lowe goes into Chapel Hill, with the frigging FLU, dons the red jacket again, and really gives everything he had. I doubt any of his guys will question him if he wants them to leave it all on the court. … [Further down] Mark my words, this will be a turning point on the season. Which way it turns I can’t say, but I’m optimistic.

Jimmy V’s “Dream” was audacious, too. But remember, a wise man once said, “Nothing can happen if not first a dream.”

Now back to Jones. His No. 1 will be a “shocker” to the Fowlers, Doyels, and the cultists:

1. Coaching is really important

NC State’s surprising run to the tournament championship game can be credited to many factors, but none more important than Sidney Lowe. …

This was all about the brilliant offense he runs, a motion scheme that still allows his players to use their individual talents to make plays. No team shoots 73 percent from the field (like the Pack did in the second half against Virginia) on luck and talent alone. The Wolfpack’s players were in great places at great times, and the reason for that was Lowe and his seemingly infinite reservoir of plays.

Let’s hit the highlights one more time: Coaching is really important — and — No team shoots 73 percent from the field on luck and talent alone. That means, by the way, that no team shoots 30 percent from the field on bad luck and lack of talent alone.

Wolfpack Nation is not so far removed from a time when we were told that the coach wasn’t to blame for players continually and reliably missing shots, game in and out (see Excuse No. 2). But I would like to point out that this year’s team shot 49.4 percent from the field, which was the highest shooting percentage since 1988-89.

That’s no accident. That’s coaching.

I was very tempted to go the Matt Drudge route of posting something like this:

    COACHING IS

    REALLY IMPORTANT

But I decided I didn’t need to disturb some people any further.

“• A Carolina fan behind me wore a T-shirt that said, “NC State is not our rival.” Uhhh, yes it is. And it will be for a while.”

And all is right with the world. I can’t wait for next year.

  3. Classof04 03/13/2007 at 12:13 AM #

^yeah, very pretentious thing to wear on a shirt. But what are you to expect?

I doubt they sell those at Wal-Mart though, so whoever it was, he’s one-in-a-million…

The Page 2 Sports Guy on ESPN.com also had this to say – “Note: Don’t even get me started about barely .500 NC State team winning three games in three days and turning themselves into a legitimate Cinderella story before running out of gas in the ACC finals against North Carolina. Four games in four days? That’s acceptable? Why not stagger the games on Wednesday-Thursday and Saturday-Sunday? I feel like NC State could have taken UNC if the Wolfpack weren’t dead in the first half. More importantly, we were robbed of a chance to see Sidney Lowe unleash his gigantic red sports coat on March Madness. Did he borrow that thing from Suge Knight or Cedric the Entertainer?”

  5. MrPlywood 03/13/2007 at 12:26 AM #

    oops – forgot these tidbits:

Most annoying story: Tyler Hansbrough’s broken-nose mask (or as I like to call it, “the Schnozzaroo”). Not even Jennifer Aniston’s nose got this much attention in 2007.

Funniest exit stage right: To Duke for losing to NC State in the ACC quarterfinals … and legitimately, I might add. Nice work, fellas. I can’t wait to see Coach K fighting back tears during the tail end of the inevitable VCU loss on Thursday after Eric Maynor strips Greg Paulus for the game-clinching layup. It’s gonna be great. I’m already giddy.

“• A Carolina fan behind me wore a T-shirt that said, “NC State is not our rival.” Uhhh, yes it is. And it will be for a while.”

    Now for the UNX nightmare.

“Far beyond West Raleigh’s Ditches …”

    “They’re back”

    and

    “Honey I’m home!”

Life as a Wolfpack basketball fan has gotten markedly better over the last year.

I look forward to next year, when maybe we can get beyond thinly veiled attacks against certain parts of the fanbase.

I also like how one time, we praise this team for leaving everything out on the floor, and then turn around and say hey, I wouldn’t blame them for turning down the NIT.

Regardless, it’s been (and continues to be!) an amazing year, I’m perfectly happy with our new coach, and I will be honest and say I haven’t been this excited about the upcoming season in a long time.

  8. WolftownVA81 03/13/2007 at 6:47 AM #

I think we learned this team has more guts than anyone had a right to expect. They’ve earned a lot of respect for themselves and our program. I really appreciate what the coaches and players have managed to do in one season. We are again what we once were, a power to be recond with. I fully expect to see them giving it their all tonight at the Drexel gym and again in Raleigh on Friday (with a little help from Marist.)

*That’s great press, and Jones “got” it.*

Its funny you mention this. I sent him an email yesterday evening before you had posted this praising him for “getting it” with his article.

When we start to win on a regular basis, the opposition will turn Sidney’s red jacket into Chuck’s red shoes. You heard it here first.

  11. graywolf 03/13/2007 at 7:31 AM #

I haven’t felt this good about NC State athletics in over 20 years. I’m excited again about our future and our athletic program. Thank you Sidney Lowe and Monte Towe from bringing back the glory!!

I can’t wait until next year. I only wish Atsur was a junior.

    Go Pack!!

  12. Rick 03/13/2007 at 7:38 AM #

I have been saying for years that a good offense puts its players in a postion to score that is good for them. Forcing veryone to hoist threes is never going to be successfull.

What I really liked hearing Sidney say was he does not “take what the defense gives him”. That is another philosohpy doomed to fail. A good team forces its will on the others not falls into their defensive trap.

  13. TNCSU 03/13/2007 at 7:43 AM #

I think Sidney will wear the jacket only on the “big” games — UNX, Duke, ACCT, etc., so disagree with the red shoe analogy — completely different personalities, too…

On another subject, has anyone heard if the game tonight will be televised locally, or is it only on ESPU(navailable)??

  14. burnbarn 03/13/2007 at 7:44 AM #

we can only to venture to guess what last year’s team would have looked like..lot’s of experience and passion.

  15. Pack92 03/13/2007 at 7:52 AM #

As I posted after the Duke game – “What coaching!” Then Sid went out and did it for 3 more games. The ability of Sid to get those uncanny plays to work is truly amazing. Roy Williams is not a bad coach and all he could do was watch us come back in the 2nd half of the championship game. If not for 2 -3 pointers in front of Atsur (who could not jump at the time) we win. I truly believe that. I will guarantee you both Coach K and Ol Roy see things in a decidely different light now! DO I need to say “Welcome home Sid” again?

  16. TNCSU 03/13/2007 at 7:53 AM #

I’m just hoping that if we get the PG position in line for next year — which I think we will, we are going to be downright tough with our nucleus we have now, and the new players coming in. Preseason top 4 in the league IMO. I would guess next years preseason top 4 picks will be: UNX, Duke, Ga. Tech, NC State…first two aren’t that hard to guess, they’re just about always 1 and 2. Depending on who UNX loses, that could change, though.

  17. TNCSU 03/13/2007 at 7:57 AM #

Those two 3 pointers, and Hansbrough getting free throws every time he touched the ball in the last 5 minutes. We also missed a couple of shots, that if we hit and take the lead, and or tie, I think we end up winning the game — who knows. It was a great run, and let’s hope the team can continue to knock out some wins in the NIT!

  18. ncsu96 03/13/2007 at 8:06 AM #

The banners are coming folks….Sid is a great coach already, end of story.

We’ve been waiting for this for 16 years start enjoying it now!!!

“I look forward to next year, when maybe we can get beyond thinly veiled attacks against certain parts of the fanbase.”

    Mr O,

We’ve all gone through season after season of hearing stuff like:

“What’s your problem old man, this is great a great basketball “system.” You’re a dinosaur and don’t know anything about basketball nowdays. Beat Duke? Beat UNC? Can’t be done.”

People talking down to us like we were so far behind the times that we didn’t know a damn thing about playing the game. That just wasn’t ever true. I hate to say it, but we have been right the whole damn time. You guys are the ones who are going have to sit through it and hear it for a while now.

One season, you’re not getting off that easy.

  20. RickJ 03/13/2007 at 8:15 AM #

I wish I had written down something Lowe said after the ECU game (might have been UNC-G). We had just barely beaten a pretty bad team at home and Lowe said something to the effect – Not to disrespect our opponent but I’m not building a program to beat this type of team. We are building a program to beat the teams we have to beat (he didn’t mention Duke or UNC by name but you knew who he meant).

This reminded me so much of V. It is so difficult to keep the big picture in mind when you are trying to grind out wins.

Lowe has such a wonderful in game demeanor. Keep in mind that while he is inexperienced as a college coach, he was the head coach in over 300 NBA games that are 48 minutes in length. He is so definitive when calling time outs and when he calls out offensive or defensive sets. This confidence is translated to the players.

Coaching definitely matters and so does talent. If we can get a high enough level of talent, I really like our chances with Lowe.

  21. Mr O 03/13/2007 at 8:19 AM #

What redfred? Did I post something?

  22. redfred2 03/13/2007 at 8:25 AM #

    Sorry O,

That was for Lock. My humble apologies.

  23. Mr O 03/13/2007 at 8:31 AM #

I think it was Shooting guard and I who first discussed the guts it took for Sidney to wear the red jacket for the first time against almost a 20 point favorite. He could have worn the red jacket for the Wake games. He could have worn it for the opening game of the year. All three games that we could have expected to win.

But instead Sidney wore it against a national title contender when nobody gave us a chance in hell to win the game. I guarantee you that our rivals and the medai would have taken shots at Sidney for wearing the red jacket had we lost that game. He risked being mocked like Amato was in his “clown shoes”.

The red jacket this year faced:

    No. 1 UNC
    No. 1 UNC
    No. 7 DUKE
    No. 2 UVA
    No. 3 Va Tech
    No. 1 UNC

    Overall record – 4-2

  24. noah 03/13/2007 at 8:42 AM #

The Red Jacket should be like Clemson’s purple jerseys. When it gets broken out, it ought to mean something special.

I was encouraged by the effectiveness of our offense in the ACC tourney when Atsur was out and Fells and Grant ran the point. I’m hoping that Degand and Javy can be equally effective.

I also hope that we become a little bit better defensively next year. Perhaps it was just a matter of fatigue…

And finally, I hope we figure out another adjective for the way the future looks other than “bright.”

  25. redfred2 03/13/2007 at 8:43 AM #

That’s right O, clowns do silly things in public for no other reason then to draw attention to themselves. When there’s substance behind the facade, the clown disappears.
