Fells & Costner’s Posterizing Dunks

Don’t ignore the hard work of Ben McCauley. (Additionally, Big Ben has had some pretty awesome slams this season that would be nice to be on YouTube as well.) But, these two posterizations deserve their own entry here.

Courtney has already had his own earlier in the year on the heels of this entry of three great dunks.

I’m going to see Costner walking across campus after my second class on Wed. and I can’t wait to say something about that dunk to him.

^havent seen Costner on campus yet… but see Neiman and Fells often.

have to congradulate Fells next time I see him, even if that one didnt count.

So we are celebrating a player making one of his six turnovers?

Fells can make spectacular plays. However, learning to cut out basic mistakes will be what makes him a great player in this league.

Come on Mr O, lighten up. We know the kid isn’t perfect but he had his best game of the year. I haven’t seen enough video evidence to overturn the call, but it did look awesome.

That is SO not walking with the way the game is called today… it’s exactly the same number of steps taken on nearly every fast break in college basketball. I’ve seen a full additional step NOT called. Another in the string of what appears to be Pack-specific enforcement of the rules (Blackman’s dives, Fells/Grant’s palming, etc)…

  6. StateFans 01/15/2007 at 8:22 PM #

    ^ I agree with this.

  7. BJD95 01/15/2007 at 9:01 PM #

Even though it was a turnover, I still think it had a demoralizing effect on Wake.

No wonder DT showed up in the locker room. After playing college ball with no dunking allowed, he had to watch his alma mater play for years with their own self enforcement of the rule. Now with the shackles off he’s itching to get out there again to see if he can still grab the dollar and leave the change. Fells can grab the dollar, don’t know enough yet about the change. He definetly set the mood for quite awhile. GG was extra aggresive attacking the rim in the game I thought (again WF, but it’s still something). He also took off from about the same sot that fells did that he got fouled on. It looked liked he couldn’t have got there, but it’s the aggression that was impressive.

BJD95: That may very well be true.

I was just pointing out that the quicker Fells cuts out some of his mistakes on basic plays at both ends of the court, the quicker he will become one of the better players in the league.

The one thought that stayed with me throughout the game:

    Wake Forest is BAD.

That is SO not walking with the way the game is called today…

The NBA has ruined the game. It was walking and I’m glad it was called.

But to the point of the thread, great dunk by Fells but a more impressive set of moves by Costner!

  12. redfred2 01/16/2007 at 9:02 AM #

Fells’ (should have been allowed) dunk is impressive, but I love Costner’s behind the back, between the legs, not to be denied, drive for the jam! Unreal display!

  13. legacyman 01/16/2007 at 9:06 AM #

I don’t have the play to study but there is so much walking allowed today that it is just ridiculous. If players had to really maintain their dribble you would see more missed layups and dunks. I guess that is progress.

I don’t mind seeing the walking and palming calls made but I want them to made against both teams whenever a game is played.

  14. redfred2 01/16/2007 at 9:15 AM #

Same here, I agree with WTNY about how it has changed and probably for the worst, but that call was very ‘ify’ by today’s standards.

  15. BoKnowsNCS71 01/16/2007 at 9:30 AM #

With shots like those, you can see why we shot 62% for the game.

  16. redfred2 01/16/2007 at 9:47 AM #

Bo, one thing’s for sure, it definitely doesn’t leave me any room to babble and complain about offensive rebounding.

  17. Mr O 01/16/2007 at 6:21 PM #

People really think that dunk should have been allowed???

He went from outside the three point line to the basket without dribbling. It was blatant and obvious and would be called almost every time in college.

  18. packpigskinfan23 01/16/2007 at 6:25 PM #

^but it was only two steps. I have seen three step dunks and lay ups not called so many times that I dont see why you can call out a guy for making it in two. its not his fault he is freakishly athletic…

  19. crackdog 01/16/2007 at 9:39 PM #

I counted 3 on the replay directly after the dunk. It was an impressively athletic move, but not a legal basketball play. Costner’s dunk was far more impressive and within the rules.

  20. jwrenn29 01/16/2007 at 10:06 PM #

I liked them both. Oh well, that it was a travel, he knew it and so did everyone else. He caught the ball a little too far out to take it without a dribble and a little too close to get a controlled dribble and dunk it. He tried.

Costner…ugh! He took it all the way and dribbled around 3 dudes and then dunked on two of them. OUCH!!!

PS: Glad I saw the game live, the YouTube link is always so choppy with it’s playback…yuck. And I have highspeed internet, too!

  21. wolfonthehill 01/17/2007 at 11:57 AM #

I stick with the fact that, no matter what it may have looked like due to Fells’ astonishing athleticism, he took no more steps than you will see allowed on five to ten drives during any given NCAA basketball game.

That’s like saying Jordan couldn’t possibly get from the 3-point line to the rim without dribbling… well, when you can fly from the free throw line to the rim, it gets a lot easier, don’t ya think?

  22. dick richard 01/18/2007 at 12:27 AM #

fells will be the best player at nc state in the next 2 years hes athletic, can shoot the hell out of the ball but he needs to stop being afraid to take shots. he has natural athletic ability and will improve GREATLY

  23. redfred2 01/19/2007 at 10:51 AM #

^You are right about all of Fells attributes, the “being afraid” part is the biggest hurdle he faces. His athleticism reminds of a longer Cam Bennerman, but he has leeway and a green light that CB didn’t. I hope he starts to challenge people and taking it inside. He has every tool he needs athletically to become a force for the PACK, he just needs to come out of his shell and get aggressive.
