Media Says: Face It, Archie’s Not Coming Back To State

As much as State fans will hate to hear it, all signs point to Archie Miller spurning NC State.

Just a little while ago, Joe Giglio, a man who is as plugged in to NC State athletics as any outsider can be, posted this tweet:

giglio

Immediately afterwards, Giglio was bombarded with questions and theories.  Sean Miller thinks he can get the UNC job when Roy Williams retires.  Archie doesn’t want to work for Debbie Yow.  Archie wants a B1G job, possibly Indiana.  You name it, it’s probably out there.  But no matter the reason(s), there’s no reasonable reason to believe that Archie Miller will be introduced as NC State’s next head coach in basketball any time soon.  And that makes Miller pretty much this year’s version of Rick Barnes.

Realistically, State will end up doing pretty much what it has always done, that is, hire a new head coach who has shown potential at a lower level of competition.  That list is long, and has some distinguished and not-so-distinguished members:

Everett Case got his first college head coaching job at NC State after serving in various basketball leadership roles for the US Navy during World War II and as a successful high school head coach before that.

Press Maravich had been the head coach at Clemson for six years, compiling a 55–96 record before coming to Raleigh to be an assistant coach under Case.  He led the Wolfpack for two seasons before being lured to LSU.

Norm Sloan was 85–63 at Florida after becoming their first full-time head coach before returning to his alma mater.

Jim Valvano was Iona’s head coach before he came to Raleigh.

Les Robinson was at East Tennessee State prior to coming to Raleigh for the thankless task of salvaging what was left of NC State hoops after the university’s leadership decided to all but kill the program.

Then came people you likely need no introduction to: Herb Sendek from Miami of Ohio, Sidney Lowe from an assistant coaching job at the Detroit Pistons and Mark Gottfried from ESPN.

There’s an obvious pattern here, and it is one that will surely play itself out over the next few days or even weeks: NC State will hire a head coach from a much smaller and generally lower profile program, and hope that it works out.  Case, Sloan and Valvano were no sure thing when they stepped onto NC State’s sidelines.  Neither were Sendek, Lowe or Gottfried.  And the next Wolfpack coach will also be a guy who is no guarantee.  And that’s probably the only guarantee that Wolfpack fans will get.

“if my opinion is changed by force I’m still of the same opinion”
    That might be a factor.

Remember that Shaka ain’t done DIDDLY at UT. He took Barnes’ Talent and went to the NCAA last year. Lowe did that with Herbie’s talent and almost beat UNC in the ACCT Final game.

Uh Lowe never made the NCAA tournament.

Joe, Mr. INSIDER, Giglio (N&O fame) has a column….Debbie is doing Keats and Wade today.

    http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/acc/nc-state/state-now/article139177693.html

MY impeccable sources tell me….DY’s iPhone is OFF. THAT would be a sure giveaway that something heavy is happening (or it got stolen as it did in Columbus).

Goodmon and Giglio seem to be on the same page. Anyone tracking Hogforce 1 or HogLimo 1?

We need OPERATIVES on the street. Someone should be on stakeout at the Case Center…

Clemson AD has NOT tweeted that Brownell has been shown the door….so WADE might be in the market. VCU folks? They are TIRED of coaches coming and going…they do not even have a thread on Wade’s departure…

Never said that LOWE made the NCAA. My point….Gottfried took Lowe’s talent and got the Sweet 16. I went to St. Louis for that.

I was in Tampa when Lowe made the best run of his tenure in the ACC Tourney. Had we more legs, we WOULD have went to the NCAA that year. Even the UNC fans were panicking. Googs and other NCSU players were in the VIP section and at the half felt we had a good shot.

My point, again….Shaka’s first two years at UT are WORSE than Gottfried’s was at NCSU. Maybe we WOULD have been better with him, but his wife said NO. That, most folks, forget and tend to think that AD Yow mucked that up.

Shaka and the NCSU lawyers had the LOI ready for release and the Monday Presser was planned. Shaka’s wife woke up and was in a Hormone imbalance (pregnant) and REFUSED to go. VCU had raided the piggy banks and borrowed the first year earnings from the Wives and Daughter’s working lower Broad Street for the next year.

Their offer was close enough and wifey said…TAKE IT….or ELSE….go to Raleigh and I MIGHT come down….after your child is born. NO PRESSURE….all Yow’s part for NOT asking….Is your WIFE Pregnant? Is SHE OK with you leaving?

Because of his ties to Sendek, I doubted from the start he’d want to coach here. I read somewhere his brother cautioned him not to take the job because he’d be coaching against UNC.

Lauren Brownlow writes this is a “tough neighborhood”. I agree. We are competing with crooks. They ruined our program in ’89 via their BOG proxy. Then they set up a fraudulent academic program on a scale never seen before to expand the pool of players to include those who weren’t college material. It appears likely they’ll skate on that. So yeah, it’s a “tough neighborhood”.

And it’s a “tough neighborhood” when most of the media badmouths you. Gary Parrish’s write up of Tom Crean’s ouster contained nary a disparaging word about IU. It was vastly different than the condescending editorial he wrote about Gottfried’s firing. Oh yes, and Calipari, about that deep tournament run …

I want a coach that up to the challenge. The rest is bogus.

NC State isn’t in a tougher neighborhood than any other ACC job. No matter where you are geographically, you still play UNC and Duke once or twice, and maybe in the tournament.

And even the loss probably helps your RPI. A win skyrockets it.

If Keats is the best we can do, bring in Lutz as a two year interim

I can already see it now. Keatts will be eaten up by this league. And when the lunatic fringe starts rolling over on him in year 2 or 3 due to us remaining at the bottom of the ACC it’s going to be portrayed in the media as being an ignorant, intolerant, and racist fan base.

Yeah, for sure Archie is not coming. Especially since we’ve already hired somebody else.

Nothing matters except who the Down East money has seen on the Rubber Chicken circuit and eaten hush puppies with. This is what happens when you have a weak AD.

If Archie don’t want it, so be it. He was a good option and if it don’t pan out, so be it, you certainly have to respect his decision and move on. If he’s waiting for the Indiana gig, good luck with that, Indiana wants ALFORD and has the jack to back it up!!

Yow is WORSE than Fowlup. I have no idea how we will manage to find someone even worse than her, but I’m sure we will be committed to trying.

So much for the homerun. We just foul tipped a bunt for our 3rd strike. What a freaking clown college.

McCallum gets props for calling this weeks ago.

We should have just kept Gottfried. Why did we do this to our athletic program. We better be paying him 20 bucks a game.

Face it boys.. we’re less than mediocre basketball school these days. Nothing about this makes any sense. Yow absolutely rushed this search in an overcompensation of her last basketball search. It was totally bungled.

It means Marshall just wanted a raise.

And Archie wasn’t coming no matter how many chickens BJD sacrificed
