Road win in ATL. Not bad. So what if we turned a 14 pt lead into a shot for them to win it at the end. Baby Steps. They missed.

NC State edges GT, ends 7-game losing streak (SalisburyPost.com)

ATLANTA (AP) — North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried finally got the win he’s been looking for.

It came too late to save his job going into next season, but Gottfried was proud of the team’s effort.

“I think what’s happened is our guys have just continued to hang in there,” Gottfried said. “Our practices have been phenomenal. We’ve had great enthusiasm, great energy.”

Terry Henderson scored 21 points, Dennis Smith Jr. added 18 points and N.C. State dealt a blow to Georgia Tech’s slim NCAA Tournament hopes with a 71-69 victory on Tuesday night.

It was the second game for the Wolfpack (15-14, 4-12 Atlantic Coast Conference) since the school announced Gottfried won’t return for a seventh season as coach. N.C. State snapped a seven-game losing streak.

“We want to send him out on a good note,” Smith said. “He deserves it.”

Pack Withstands Georgia Tech Rally to Secure Road Win (GoPack.com)

With the win, NC State improved to 15-14 on the season, 4-12 in the ACC, while Georgia Tech fell to 16-12, 7-8 in the ACC.

NC State led 63-50 with 2:20 to play and still led by nine, 68-59, with 36 seconds to go, but the Yellow Jackets mounted one final rally, closing to within 70-69 on a three-pointer with four seconds to play. Dennis Smith, Jr., connected on one free throw to put the Pack up two and NC State secured the win as Georgia Tech’s last second three-pointer bounced off the rim.

NC State did not trail after the first five minutes of the game. The Pack was down 6-4 before going on an 8-0 run to take a 12-6 lead. Georgia Tech would close within one, 19-18, with 7:47 left in the first half, but NC State responded with a 10-2 run to take a 29-20 lead with 5:21 to go in the first half. Terry Henderson scored eight consecutive points for the Pack during the run.

The Pack entered the halftime locker room with the momentum as NC State scored the final four points of the opening 20 minutes courtesy of a lob to Ted Kapita from Markell Johnson and a heads-up steal and lay-up from Maverick Rowan to go into the break with a 39-30 lead.

Pack’s energy key in UVa matchup (TechnicianOnline.com)

The NC State men’s basketball team is set to face the Virginia Cavaliers Saturday at noon in PNC Arena after defeating the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, 71-69.

The Wolfpack (15-14, 4-12 ACC) snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Yellow Jackets. NC State dominated two surprising categories in the matchup: rebounds and second-chance points. The Pack won the glass battle 40-28 and second chances 14-5.

State led for the majority of the game, as the Jackets only lead was by two just 30 seconds in. The Pack had some shaky moments but controlled the game until the last couple of minutes. NC State’s largest lead was 14 with 3:09 left in the game, then Tech cooked a furious comeback that fell just short with a 3-pointer bouncing off the rim as the clock expired, yielding a Pack victory.

NC State mustered its second road victory of the season and its first win since Jan. 23.

Furthermore, the Cavaliers (18-9, 8-7 ACC) are searching for their first win in quite some time. Virginia is currently on a four-game losing streak, dropping games to Virginia Tech, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill and Miami.

The Cavs have struggled over the past four games, as well as the entire season with offense. Over the past four games, Virginia has scored a combined 222 points, an average of 55.5 per game. In UVa’s loss to Miami, the Cavaliers managed just 48 points, and that’s including a five-minute overtime period.

The Cavaliers are ranked 301st nationally in scoring offense. To put that mark into perspective, schools like Prairie View A&M University, California Polytechnic State University and Morgan State University rank higher in scoring offense.

For what the Cavaliers lack in offense, they make up for in lockdown defense. Virginia is ranked No. 1 and No. 20 nationally in scoring defense and opponent field-goal percentage, respectively. Head coach Tony Bennett’s team, while not flashy or high-scoring, gets the job done, year in, year out.

If it’s any consolation, KH is closer to an actual King than MG is to an actual coach.

Heard a tidbit on the post game show that in home acc games our opponents shot 51% from the 3 point line.

    Impressive.

That doesn’t surprise me at all. Seems like every team we’ve played has some kid that’s been 18% from 3 and goes off for 7 of 10 against us. But yeah, when the average is probably 30%, 51% is stellar! “When you play NCSU double team Smith and shoot 3’s and you’ll win!”

Originally I was OK with Gott staying for the year. Now I think it was a mistake simply because of not playing Beejay.

hmmm.. I don’t know that that’s true. I’m showing 45.8% (100 made of 218 attempted).. by the way, that’s still terrible

I was severely chastized (got thick skin) for saying we had not played an “A” game all year if you look at the uncontested shots, particularly 3 PT’s. When the other team’s shots go down and are uncontested, we lose. When the other team (Duke for example) can’t hit feces, but we let them keep trying, we have a shot at winning. Either way you look at it, we don’t defend worth a crap, as ORW would say.

I heard the comment in the radio audio in the PNC bathroom about how one player had only hit X this year or Y within the past Z games, but was burning up the nets today.

I remember a similar tale of woe from our soon-to-be EX coach about how…”some times a guy gets hot”. That seems to happen MORE to us that any other team in the league and we don’t do that often….or at all.

If you looked at the Jumbotron today, we had 4 guys in double figures and Maverick, and I LIKE him and hopes he stays, was showing 2. When he went to the FT line for his ONLY 2 points, he was 0-5 and that was in BOTH FG and 3 Pt FG. Maverick was not hitting. In fairness, he WAS rebounding.

It WILL soon be over soon. IF we want to mess up the Jungle Telegraph for our coaching job, we will go in to Little John and decimate (UNC Style) Clemson and embarrass them so much that Brownell will be fired.

Reading the thread previous posts, as I did not follow the thread while at the game, sounds like my decision to go, tired as I was, was the best one rather than hear Doris lamenting how UNFARILY Gottfried had been treated.

Did she throw in the lines about how he had lost weight, got his personal life in order with a finalization of his divorce, got his AFib fixed and also had a NEW squeeze….slightly older than his kids? Therefore there was NO reason for him NOT to be focused on NCSU BB this year…

MANY comments today in the Champions Club about how when a certain STB EX coach was handing out his cellphone number to the cuteys at the Jimmy V golf tournament after his FIRST season that AD Yow should have been a bit more ASSERTIVE in her…”Mark, cut this $h_t out” conversations…but the comment was…”it was ONLY hearsay….”

Amen, Roo. It sucks that we can’t openly hit back against this ESPN/Pravda agitprop. And DY squarely put us in the crosshairs. She deserved the on-air scolding today. But NC STATE did not.

Well, you hire an ESPN announcer and give him a shot.. then fire him 6 years later and keep him on the job out of pity.. and THEN have games broadcast on ESPN what do you expect? They’re sticking up for their buddy, regardless of merit.

And that’s sort of DY’s Karma for hiring her buddy in the first place, then looking the other way and making excuses for her buddy’s caddish behavior, is it not??

But again…unfair for State to suffer.

    THIS JUST IN….

OK, just got Feedback from a friend who was at the game today. If you were there, you noticed that Henderson’s DAD actually accompanied BJ to center court today. The ENTIRE team was his “Escort”. Strange….where were BJ’s family. Never seen the entire team come out with a Senior. THAT may have been a “in your face”…

According (and I do NOT have pictures) to the friend, they were seated NEARBY Anya’s Mom and GF, His “Family” had SIGNS….which THEY were holding up….

    FREE ANYA

IF the rest of this post comes out in bold…I did not mean it that way.

Anya did NOT have either of them in his entourage. The tension between Anya and Gottfried was so thick, you could see it from the club level and cut it. During the game, Anya was like a jumping jack cheering his teammates. My conclusions about our “role model” STB EX coach are vindicated. Wonder if Doris or ESPN got shots of his Mom and his GF? I guess if they had a Black Anya Matters sign, then ESPN would have made a big deal over it. In the PNC, they DID flash up several “We love you BJ, 21” signs that were all around the PNC.

I worry that if’n I called Beejay’s lovely lady Queen Hippo, she’d take it the wrong way. Plus, I don’t want to put any ring pressure on the young fella.

Brickhouse, Henderson and Anya are the Seniors. Anya started. He got a few brief minutes at the end of the first half.

At the end, with about 1:45 or so to go, Gottfried put in Brickhouse. The crowd started the BJ Anya chant and he refused to put in Anya.

    Nuff said?

I wouldn’t let him coach the ACCT, just because it would be nice for the kids not to have him around for that experience. Especially KH.

Doris being underwhelmed with DSJ while at the same time holding Gott up as a fantastic coach during a complete and utter a$$ stomping on our home court is rich. Guess what though? I was underwhelmed with the color commentators today.

Not to back Gott, because at this point he’s proven he is a terrible coach, but BJ’S issue here has always been conditioning. If he’d have worked hard and been able to get to about 250 and run, he would be a better story. I’m glad he has been a good teammate this year and a incredible cheerleader, but I wish BJ would have committed to staying in shape. Gottfired is part to blame as much of the team is out of shape and slow for ability, but bj didn’t work hard enough on his own. Still, I’ll miss his smile.

@wolfmanmat Yes sir. It’s probably an unpopular opinion around these parts but nobody knows what transpired between Gott & Anya to get him in the dog house. It’s easy to assume Gott was at fault for any # of reasons, but at the end of the day Anya showed up for the 1st game with clear and concise evidence that he wasn’t interested in sacrificing for the good of the team. Who’s fault is that? Coaches or Anya? Probably a bit of both.

One thing that is 100% certain is that the entire environment is toxic and a change is in order. Yow deserves some kudos for identifying that.. how things unfold in the next month will ultimately define her legacy here. I’m hopeful.

    At this point… it’s safe to repeat…

“Every team is a mirror image of it’s Coach”.

… which is this specific case could be expanded to include…

DOOORIS, may I axe you one question… “If Coach shows lack of ‘discipline’… then what should one reasonably expect of his Team?”

    I predict….with no mystic powers…

IF the Clemson Game were scheduled for ESPN, then the Talking Heads, would be bragging about how the ACC has 7 teams in the Top Twenty Five….and how difficult it was for Coach Gottfried to compete with such a YOUNG and INEXPERIENCED team….

Therefore, he was fired for NO JUST CASUE….except the witch hunt mentality of our fan based.

Now, one SHOULD note that we were supposed to be in the TOP SIX, according to those intellectual giants of the media. THEREFORE, we WOULD be a TOP 25 team.

IF we WERE a Top Twnety Five team, the AD Yow would have achieved one of her goals….and thus, no “come into my office….and CLOSE THE DOOR…” conversations.
