Gottfried Fired (Officially)

As much as I do enjoy a good firing, the fact Gottfried will finish the season — I’ll let y’all speculate why — gives me no confidence our current leadership has any control of this program. We all know this program has the potential to make a great hire (evidenced by John Calipari confirming he had initially accepted the State job in 2006), but for whatever the reasons (start with former AD incompetence and work down the list), that hasn’t happened.

I hope I’m wrong, but hope isn’t a strategy and nothing our administration has done in the past 30 years — since our last ACC title — suggests we can expect a great hire this time. We want to believe Archie Miller would take the job because he (and his wife) is one of us, and despite three decades of irrelevance, we’re loyal to a fault and that’s what we would do.

But with (at least) a month remaining in Dayton’s season, all we can really do now is agonize over the rumors and unsubstantiated speculation based wholly on what that unnamed Top Donor with the inside scoop told our buddy’s buddy. Who knows, maybe we’ll finally get Rick Barnes.

Now, I encourage everyone to get out to RDU and start tracking tail numbers.

Speaking of classy… Tonight Gott did the show. He said he loved NC State…If Deb Yow was difficult to work for, you couldn’t tell.

Gott deserves some thanks for making us relevant again…And showing that you can recruit, win and beat the blues at our place or theirs.

It hasn’t been a perfect ride, but he deserved this shot. And like bjd said, if he leaves us a good slate – thanks and you are welcome at the bar any time.

Classy as a Capital Blvd. used car salesman. I’m grateful for Year 1. Every other was a dud. He’s robbed the bank and ruined a golden opportunity to resurrect a career. There will be cheers out of respect at his last game but it will be brutal until that time. Laying the blame anywhere other than at his feet for this debacle is shameful.

Gottfried has nothing for the collection of the glass menagerie.

Rather, do these trinkets give a flying pigs ass about themselves and teammies? There comes a time, ya know.

If they’re so damned talented, they should know this by rote…by now.

I have been reading these predictions/suggestions of various news sources. This one takes the cake to a writer who is an absolute idiot. Check out the King Rice suggestion. He has no clue….At all. King Rice lol. Really King freaking Rice, hello do you not have a brain at all? That would never ever happen in Raleigh for no amount of success. Never! Check it out

Gottfried is leaving here just like he did Bama. They simply had the gonads to at least tell him to pack it up midseason. Real coaches take menageries and turn them into stone, or they don’t recruit what’s breakable.

The guy is an first rate ass and shyster of the first order. Good riddance.

I would suicide bomb the hockey arena if we tried to hire Queen Wheat. SERIOUSLY.

Also, pak/Dog – I listed to the Gravelly thing – doesn’t surprise me that little bit at 6:05. Because it was that toxic. I noted back in December that KH refused to huddle up when he was in the game. But to have a guy tell a coach “fuck you” when asked to pay attention to instruction during crunch time of a rivalry game like that…you have to wonder at the genesis of and just how deep the roots of the toxicity. And no way is that just or primarily “bad apples” players.

Maybe if you had an insane amount of upperclassman leadership, they could have rallied everybody and said “screw Coach, let’s win for ourselves” but instead we got what we got.

MG’s constantly taking verbal shots at the most popular guy on the team (again, KH) didn’t do him any favors, either.

I think the author got his information from this site. In part because I mentioned King Rice in one of the threads, as a sort of non sequitur joke, and I guess it turns out he is a coach and the writer added him to his list.

I haven’t kept track of Tom Crean, would love to see him as a dark horse candidate. Aside, if Hoiberg were to be a legit candidate, we’d have to wait until the end of the nba season and that’s April (w/i playoffs end of May).

I’ve heard the name Tubby Smith come upin the past, why not revisit..

Yeah… wanna bet a dollar that kid, who I sincerely hopes remains nameless, was the only one or that was the only time that kinda thing happened??

What if a kid told Coach Rat F.U. ???

    I’m seeing this a little differently…

    1. Coach and AD are tight for years… Coach doesn’t make big decisions without consulting AD
    2. Sh#t hits fan a little over a year ago…
    3. Coach and AD huddle up… resulting in Lutz and others departure…
    4. At the same time, a bunch of kids move on early….
    5. AD tells Coach not to worry… just go get some more kids…
    6. Coach expresses some concerns about Teamn chemistry with a bunch of new kids and no senior leadership and how long it takes to get kids to play at the D1 level… Maybe Coach says… let’s don’t and say we did… take the year to really get it right for 2018…
    7. AD says No, I want this right now. and that’s your job to give me what I want… and understand this…
if you fail we’re both gone…
    8. AND in that case, you’re going first, I’ll take care of you…
    9. Coach says Yes Maam, Thank You..
    10. Sh#t continues to go downhill just as Coach warned… and in the end at least proves that he’s still a gentlemen, because he doesn’t kiss and tell… knowing he’s gott his guaranteed money and next was gonna be worse than this year…

Point here is… NFW this all falls 100% on Coach…

Wonder how the AD feels knowing she’s the first AD since 1924 to oversee consecutive losing seasons in men’s basketball, excluding the WWII years and the self-imposed probation Les Robinson years?

And we’re gonna let her keep the job for two more years, much less lead another MBB Coaching Search???

Sounds like a job for SSC… Special Search Committee…

Bill: I’m with you on that narrative up until about it step 4. After that is a theory, but not one I’d subscribe to.

One has to think back to the series of events. After year 2, Gott blamed the players. Bad mix of kids, Tyler Lewis and his dad and Purvis and his mom were issues. Lewis was gone. Purvis lasted another year.

Then last year the narrative most of the year was Gott was caught off guard and short handed because of Lacey and then Henderson getting hurt. Not saying we’re blaming the players, but you know those were extenuating circumstances, and oh yeah I need some new staff. And did I mention that I have the “Rescue Squad” sitting over there? Gott tried this offseason to pull a Sendek and pair some incoming players with a change in assistants. Unfortunately for him, unlike Sendek, he didn’t overhaul things top to bottom.

As for this year, I don’t think Yow intended to fire him. She put at least one assistant on a 2 year deal. It just became so awful that her hand was forced.

Also, it falls down on Gott saying this was a young team and WTNY. This roster was only here one year. DSJ was a lottery pick before he stepped on the court and would be foolish not to cash in. If Yurt’s game had translated to the US, he could have feasibly only been here one year as well. Anya was a senior. Henderson may or may not get a 6th year. The window was now, as discussed before the season. It was clearly time to put up or shut up.

I’m in the same place. Not that we can do anything about it, but she very clearly botched the first search. Now fires a guy mid-season-ish, but he keeps the keys for another month. The whole thing is starting off in a really weird way. Hopefully, she has an ace up her sleeve that will say yes. But there is a lot of time – a lot of time for things to go wrong.

Whether we score Archie Miller or not, the search is in very capable hands

You obviously missed the clusterfuck that ended up with Gott in Raleigh.

This. Anyone who is comfortable with Yow performing this search is forgetting the embarrassment of her last bball search including that awful email. Ugh.

It’s simple really, raise the money to pay 4 million a year, go get a top tier coach and pay them. If we stay in the 2.5 million range we will get roughly the same results. I want a Marshall, Miller, or Holtman, coach at Butler. We only get those guys if we are willing to pay them.

Lowe beat UNC, too, on occasion. Gott did a very good job early on, but the wheels have fallen off, just like his time at Bama. The good news is we do have some talent on the roster – if we can keep those guys around for the next coach. This has to be the top priority outside of hiring the right guy to lead us. The other good news is – yes – we are in a better position thanks to Gott’s efforts. You can win here, you really can.

UVA made their home run hire with Bennett not long ago. Va Tech snagged Buzz Williams from Marquette – another very good hire. If Va Tech can hire a Buzz Williams quality coach, if Miami can hire a Larranaga quality coach, certainly WE can. It’s just a matter of finding the right man and going like mad to make sure you get him.

All the stars are aligned to get Arch. This is his senior-laden team, best year for him to jump. He’s very fond of Raleigh, as supposedly is his wife. The only competing jobs will be B1G, and even they MAY not come open.

We just need not screw it up, or insult him by going in cheap to start negotiations. He needs to know we are serious, and are treating him like the star-level coach that he is.

7-year deal, $3.5M average value. Control over AD selection (hopefully sooner than later). NC State shall be ArchieWorld.

Perhaps the real casualty in this is Dennis Smith. He really has no mentor or no one to trust now.

    http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/acc/nc-state/state-now/article132535164.html

I assume that Coach Gottfried will offer to advise him as his pro prospects start to develop. And I think that Coach Gottfried does have enough contacts in the ESPN sphere to get a good gauge on it. But Dennis has also lost another opinion, so to speak.

Real bummer for a kid that has played his heart out this year.

The OTHER thought is that we have now achieved a certain “status”. We are the FIRST Power 5 institution to officially kick off the 2017 Coaching Carousel….I don’t think that is something that we set out to do, but regardless….it has happened.

Coach Gottfried, when he was totally focused on NCSU and also had the complet support of his staff and also was more of a “taskmaster and disciplinarian” was successful. As his personal issues interfered, it also impacted the overall respect that he got from the team. It is a pity that his talents and efforts were diluted….

For those that think that there were NO PERSONAL ISSUES that perhaps diverted the Coach’s focus on his job, I guess that you are discounting….

    >>Two major divorces in or near our program:
    >>Four trips to the “Principal’s Office” where the Coach was told to get his personal life together or tone it down as major donors were concerned and took their complaints directly to the AD and the WPC;
    >>One “Come to Jesus meeting”, almost a mutiny by your coaching staff, as your personal behavior as his employment status has a MAJOR impact on their jobs;
    >>The original “comments”, unsubstantiated and Pooh-Poohed here in 2011, from the friends and family that were very close to the Alabama program….

Gossip? Maybe. BUT the above DID happen. Sidney Lowe “lost the team” when he had similar personal problems.

The reason that the coach was fired was for not winning and if you look at the timing of his “separation” and the next years outcomes and the ups and downs of the programs, there is a direct correlation.

I am of the opinion that he now has an opportunity, with his heart issues corrected and a new GF to sort out his life and figure out what his priorities are. And I wish him the best in doing it. But, I cannot realistically look at what happened and wish that certain actions had been taken earlier, when there was sufficient facts to support them….and we would not have dropped so low nor would we have spent (probably) the amount of money that we will spend on “NOT DOING THE RIGHT THING”.

We DID have some good years, but we also have paid the price for looking the other way…. I hold AD Yow in the highest esteem and she has done a great job for NCSU, but her loyalty to Coach perhaps tainted her vision and I suspect that she would not choose the same course again…. BUT, it is time to move on. Her contributions to NCSU outweigh this situation and she will be totally focused on getting us the best coach.

100% accurate. If we want him and are at all competent (and assuming he doesn’t hate NC State), we will get him. It’s pretty straightforward.

Longtime lurker here, with no reason to be believed or trusted.

But everything Adventuroo said is 100% accurate and well known in ITB social circles.

Not judging or dragging the man down, as we all have our struggles. But off-the-court issues were a substantial contributing factor when it came to focus, drive, and player-coach relationships.

As a group, I think that we are 0-fer on predicting/picking the next coach in either FB or BB. I hope you’re right, but I’m not willing to bet on it. I could be happy with a number of names that have been listed here as long as I know that we went to Archie first.

I also hope that we use a search consultant to help filter the process. As a starting assumption, I doubt that State could pay any proven coach already making >$3M to pick up and move. But there is always the chance that a coach that fits that description is ready to move on. A search consultant makes it easy for my hypothetical coach to use his agent to make contact and check for interest from State.

After the last two BB coaching searches, it seems obvious that we are going to have to pick from the group of mid-major coaches that show promise. As long as the hire is from that group (or better), then I’ll be happy with the search no matter how the results on the court turn out.

Here’s a list of past Xavier coaches: Skip Prosser, Thad Matta, Sean Miller, and Chris Mack (current). Which one has the most wins as head coach at Xavier?
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
Answer: None of the above. Pete Gillen won the most games in Xavier history and flamed out at UVA. Pete is an example of a “good hire” that just didn’t work out. State’s last two BB coaching searches ended up with candidates that came with no specific reason to be excited; other than his hiring meant the previous coach was gone.

Input and involvement in hiring the next AD, fine. Control over who the next AD is, never. I’m a tad old school with the whole chain of command concept.

You’ve at least got a reasonable foundation of ACC-caliber players in GFK, Markell, Dorn, Kapita, and two wild cards in Frenchie and Tall Atsur. I’d like them to come back.

I’d like everybody to come back…. including Mr. Smith…
another year in Rawlee would mean something to him… long term…

There’s no chance Dennis Smith Jr. comes back next year, and he definitely shouldn’t, so why bother hoping he does?

I only offer control because Arch is SO MUCH better than every Plan B name, and because I trust him. I’m not even sure he would exercise the power, it’s just a showing of OUR trust in and dedication to giving him everything he needs to succeed here.

As to the “shenanigans” – I agree they had impact, though not as much as the fact that MG played favorites (as he consistently did throughout his tenure, other than Year One). The larger lesson from both is that kids/teenagers can sniff a hypocrite a mile away, and they will have ZERO respect for you once they do.

Wanna know the genesis of “f-ck you” in the huddle and other similar stuff? That’s where you look. Not “bad apples” or a “lack of senior leadership.”
