2016 ACC Baseball Championship

Wolfpack Baseball, as well as most of the rest of the ACC…not to mention 3/4’s of the Big four…will be in Durham this week for the 2016 ACC Baseball Championship.
1/4 of the Big Four will be at home 8 miles away. See I KNOW it’s 8 miles because Dick Vitale tells me so, incessantly, at least twice every year.

But I digress…

Congrats to Wake and Duke for sliding in under the wire.  And to BC as well.  Well done, Eagles.

And Heels…..Memorial Day weekend is always a big time at the beach. So maybe consider a last minute get away. I mean it’s not like you’ll be going to class or studying, so what I’m saying is….treat yourselves and enjoy the time off.

A Quick Recap of How it Works…

Tuesday’s games are single elimination. Loser goes home, winner enters pool play in their respective pool.

Wednesday thru Saturday is pool play. Every team plays the other teams in their pool once. If you go 3-0 you are assured of a berth into Sunday’s championship game. If you go 2-1 and tied with only one other team, whoever won the head to head game moves on. If you’re tied with two other teams at 2-1, the highest seeded team moves on…regardless of the head to head results.

For this reason, it is in our best interests to take care of business early and take both FSU and Miami down early. One of them will beat the other, preventing a 3 way tie with two higher seeded teams…Pack moves on.

Of course that is theoretical at best. Because if we lose to the lower seeded team and are tied with only them, they’d move on.

So just beat everybody and remove all doubt…is what I’m saying.

Sunday’s Championship Game is of course a single winner takes all. Not a best 2 out of 3 like in Omaha.

A (Very Brief) Hosting/National Seed Mention

We’ll probably host an NCAAT regional at home as long as we don’t go 0-fer in our pool in the ACCT.

We will not be a national seed unless we get to Sunday. And probably not even unless we take the whole enchilada. And maybe not even then. But we will be playing at least two teams with top level RPI (Miami and FSU) and potentially a 3rd if we make it to Sunday. Which will certainly help our resume. But right now the biggest thing we need to do is win some games.

FWIW, Pack’s RPI currently is #7. Unfortunately, poll voters were less enthused by our series win over Carolina than we all were.

Some Highlights from Last Weekend

And something that has nothing to do with anything, but it was recently shared with me and I found it darkly hilarious….

Go Pack!!!!!

BTW, the reason I always call Will Gilbert by the moniker of “Weeell” is because there’s a gal who had tix a few rows in front of me this season who really likes Will and has a very deep southern accent. I always enjoyed it when he’d come in from the pen. She’d start yelling “Weeell!!!!” like her life depended on it.

Can’t believe Dejuneas left that 0-2 pitch right over the middle of the plate.

7-3 Final, Pack falls to ‘Noles.
Road just got harder, and we’re now gonna need some a lot of help.

If I’m thinking straight (which is always a crapshoot, btw)…the only way we make it to Sunday now is:

FSU loses to both Miami and GT.
We beat both Miami and GT.
    GT beats Miami.

We’d tie GT at 2-1 in the pool, we’d go via head to head win.

EDIT – I wasn’t thinking straight (told ya).
If the first two happen, the GT/Miami game wouldn’t matter as even if Miami won, we’d still be tied with Miami at 2-1 with the head to head tiebreaker.

So not as dire as I thought. But still not ideal.

That’s all there is, Wuf. Ain’t no other way.

^ The main thing is we need FSU to lose two (to avoid the head to head tiebreaker loss with them as well as the chance of the 3 way tie where seeding comes in). Oh and we also do need to win two. Still a lot to ask…but not impossible.

Basically, one more FSU win and we’re toast either way.

OH….and I still hate pool play format. Just saying.
I get the whole saving pitching. But I don’t like the fact that meaningless games get played. Or that it might be meaningless for one team while not the other.
Gimme double elim any day of the week.

Wuf, (or anyone else that wishes to answer) not that it matters at this point as FSU’s last run was inconsequential, but do you believe that Dejuneas deserved a WP in the ill-fated bottom of the eighth, or should Knizner have been charged with a PB? Having been a catcher years ago, it’s something that you pay attention to. I’d bet CD pays attention to that stuff too.

Hmmm, interesting. At the time I was so emotional that my “fan driven mind” just knee-jerked to WP. I’ll have to go back and look.

Just rewatched the WP/PB in question.
Tough call. Almost looks like they got crossed up upon further inspection. But yeah, Knizner shoulda kept that one in front of him.
Still not sure how I’d score it necessarily.

What’s the word on Williamson? I understand he was a no-go for ACC tournament regardless of how many we play. Will he be ready for the regional?

Wuf, I think Knizner picks, yeah, he picks, especially backhands, and does not use his body to block pitches that are down and away, and I especially hate it with runners on base. I suppose he hasn’t figured out the value of a chest protector just yet. I realize that he is still relatively new to the position, but his picking is inexplicable to me. He should have gotten better defensive teaching in the last two years. His defense is not a new angle on the game such as changing the way a catcher used to catch a fowl pop up (glove up), twenty years ago with a no break mitt, or the proper bunting stance, pitch counts, or other significant changes to the game since. The catcher’s defense is not up for review for a new training manual. Use your dang body. Keep the ball in front of you. Yeah, he’s a picker, I just worry about his commitment to stopping the ball with runners on base, or is it poor coaching? Today, catchers use their body in the show…everyday..that’s the job, it has not changed, it is the position.

Absolutely hate the pickin’…But I see it all the time.
Hey, Wolfanatic? Did you know that when I showed up at State, it was as a High School All-American catcher?

So…then there was Bill Glad. Straight to the outfield we go, never to use the tools of ignorance for the Pack.
