Mark Gottfried gets new contract on eve of new season

Hard to argue with the merit of this as NC State’s Basketball program has stabilized at more than acceptable level since Coach “Got” to Raleigh. With the age of the talent that currently resides on NC State’s roster and the exceptional recruiting class that is lining up for next season this seems to be nicely timed and well played by Debbie Yow and the NC State administration.

N.C. State basketball coach Mark Gottfried has a new five-year contract, the school announced on Friday.

The deal raises Gottfried’s annual compensation to at least $2.48 million annually through 2020.

Gottfried has a 92-52 record and has led the Wolfpack to the NCAA tournament in each of his first four seasons.

N.C. State opens the 2015-16 on Friday night against William & Mary. The contract, approved by the school’s board of trustees on Friday, replaces the one Gottfried signed in Sept. 2012 and runs through the 2019-20 season.

His annual financial package breaks down to $760,000 for his base salary and $1,725,000 in supplemental compensation.

Gottfried is only the third ACC coach to guide his first four teams to the NCAA tournament. The Wolfpack reached the Sweet 16 last year and in 2012. It had been that far in the NCAA tournament only twice in the 23 years before Gottfried was hired.

Gottfried’s previous contract would have paid him $2.1 million before bonuses this season. He has a chance to add as much as $800,000 in performance bonuses each year for an ACC title, national title, finishing ranked in the AP or USA Today polls and NCAA tournament wins.

The new contract also calls for an automatic one-year extension if N.C. State makes the NCAA tournament in 2016, ‘17, ‘18 or ‘19 and an automatic two-year extension for making the Final Four or winning the ACC tournament.

N.C. State also agreed to a new contract for women’s basketball coach Wes Moore. The third-year coach will make $460,000 annually through the 2019-2020 season.

More kudos to NC State to coordinate the release of the following video with today’s announcement:

I’ve only read a few of the comments, so forgive me if this was mentioned.

It’s not only about awarding Gott an extension, it’s also for recruiting, to show the school’s commitment to Gott, and thus to the recruit and what Gott is selling.

    Foose,

Good point. ORW got an extension and that supposedly was a signal that ORW and UNC BB “ain’t going down”. If you recall during the early years of TGU (The Great Unpleasantness) at UNC, a BOT member, Barbara Rosser Hyde remarked….”Is THIS (TGU) gonna hurt recruiting?” What a classic comment and also speaks volumes about the intellect and focus of such a lofty person of power….

In the meantime, Sylvia Hatchell is sitting on HOLD and Bubba ain’t even asked her to come over for coffee and donuts. Therefore, she is really recruiting based on her own personna and the fact that she has a record that some will say, is better than ORW. However, without the UNC Stamp of Approval (Contract Extension and $$ increase), she has some constraints….

NOW….to put things in a little bit of perspective….

    Gottfried is GUARANTEED…..Base of $750K & Supplemental of $1,725K for a TOTAL OF >>> $2,475K <<<<

Shaka Smart at Texas is guaranteed (this year) $2,800 K.

Gottfried has a larger “Incentive” potential….$1,500K. ASSUMING it is the SAME ratio of the Base Contract….25% Academic and 75% Performance or Competitive.

Shaka can earn an additional $600K…..but that is only 10% or $50K Academic and $550K Performance….plus Coach of the Whatever Awards.

Obviously Texas recruits smarter players and they don’t need any incentives for good grades….

I have to agree that bringing Case and Sloan into a comparison with today is invalid. Apples and oranges.

Sadly, we will probably never have another coach as good as V leading our program.

V is a “once in a lifetime” kind of phenomenon. If you are really, really lucky.

This might piss some of you off…

    This easy going crowd?

One thing about Gott, I believe that HE believes that he (we) can go toe-to-toe with the recent and/or traditional powers in the ACC. That may not seem like much, but there is value there to not be disregarded.

He was the total package. From recruiting, to bringing excitement to the actual x and o’s come game time he was the real deal and just a treat to talk to.

He veered way the hell of course though as soon as he became AD. No need at all for him to be in that position IMO.

I appreciate that MG at least FIGHTS for us and thinks outside the box. Damn it, that means something to me. He’s not perfect, but then again, we don’t exactly PAY HIM like a perfect coach, now, do we?

He’s a B+ coach, and we haven’t been anywhere close to that since we ran V out of town. I hope he can grow and become more than that, but B+ is acceptable. You can get a special season here and there out of B+. VERY high likelihood that you will fuck up if you try to roll the dice on someone else.

You see, the maths is VERY different than when it comes to evaluating a proven ceilinged B- like HWSNBN.

After 4 years of Gott I’m fine with him as our coach. I really like the way his teams have been able to improve over the course of the season most years (3 of 4). I think he does a solid job recruiting and managing the roster. I’m not sure he will ever win a NC, but he can position the program such that our next coaching search doesn’t end up as a reality show and we can attract a top mid major guy. Who knows, he might be able to parlay ORW’s probation/retirement and the Rat’s retirement into first place on Tobacco Road for the Pack.

Thanks BJD and TEx. I really needed something to smile about. I’m so dejected after Florida State, Wilhelm and Marietta and Bam Bam bye bye.

I agree Gott is a B+ coach. I believe he will never win a title of any sort while he is here but we don’t suck. His indifference to defense will always keep him from doing anything really significant. I wish I saw him changing but there is more than ample history to see he has no desire to change that. I am fairly apathetic at this point.

My very long range prediction is this: Gott is obviously here through Yows tenure 2019, producing the exact same results, middle tier ACC finisher. Perennial bubble team. New AD comes in and wants his(or her) guy in that position. Much like Yow and TOB/Lowe. New AD applies crazy pressure a la yow TOB/Sid and has to make a change when results are the same. Fanbase again splinters.

That is all contingent of course if Yow doesnt give him another raise/extension on her way out which is pretty likely given her history.

Odds on GOTT’s Contract Extension….pretty HIGH. The “Make Sweet 16” is still in there….and it reset when he got the NEW extension….so he will probably be around a while more.

However, that is NOT being said in a negative way….it is just a fact.

IF SO, then the new AD will have to find some rusty money in the vault….and we will be paying the NEW coach on a level with ORW….not Mikey….but highly paid. When first MAJOR coaching job, Shaka Smart, is making MORE (and his increases are exponential) that GOTT, the universe has changed….probably Global Warming or Climate Change.

On another NOTE, I got a note back for the AD. It seems that the Coaches are getting a very BIG incentive….to quote fro the email….

“Both Dave and Mark now have up to $700,000 in potential academic bonuses, more than their competitive bonuses, I believe. Earning them of course is a challenge. That said, we intentionally included them because they reflect our value system.”

Right, Wrong or Indifferent….here is the quote from CBSSports on ORW’s contract….

“Incentives for Williams include: $75,000 for every annual APR score that is 975 or better; $25,000 for each NCAA Tournament appearance; $100,000 for winning one NCAA Tournament game; $150,000 each time UNC reaches a Sweet 16; $200,000 each time UNC reaches the Elite Eight, and another $200,000 if the team makes the Final Four; and $250,000 if UNC wins a national title under Williams.”

GOTT’s contract pays more bonuses for the ACC Title and the Tournament Title….but he only gets ONE MONTH’s ($62,500) salary for a Sweet 16 appearance….NONE for making the NCAA tourney. NOW, his original contract DID have an Auto 2 Year Extension for making the 11/12 or the 12/13 NCAA Tourney….which he did.

Don’t know if the NEW contract has the first two years (15/16 & 16/17) as an AUTO 2 year extension.

Remember, the buyout works BOTH WAYS….

Tell me again why Yow did this?
