Don Shea Has Passed Away

Local sportscaster and host of NC State’s coaching shows Don Shea has passed away, according to WTVD.

Former WTVD sports director Don Shea was found dead of natural causes at his home in Orange County Monday morning.

Shea spent 17 years at WTVD before going to work at NC State University, where he was the host of NC State television shows for over 25 years.

Shea first started working for NC State when Jim Valvano asked him to head up his media enterprise, JTV. From there, Shea hosted the “Jim Valvano Show” as well the “Dick Sheridan Show” among others, and he was an institution in NC State sports media. Shea was also active in charities, working with Make-a-Wish, the March of Dimes and served on the Board of Directors of the Duke Children’s Classic.

He is survived by two sons, Kyle and Derek.

Sorry to see this – had the pleasure of speaking with him several times through the years, and he was always gracious and generous with his time, and interested (or at least pretended to be !) in a layman’s thoughts and questions.

    Rest in Peace, Don…

Ditto the above. I put up a forum earlier on it. I THINK that at one time, he actually quit WTVD and was running JTV Enterprises for Valvano. That actually did put him in the “Coach’s Show” MC chair. Don’t know exactly when he left JTV and was an NCSU Employee.

Really great guy….did talk to him a few times. Always positive….and outgoing. Not braggy….

Sorry I didn’t see your forum post first, Roo. I posted it as soon as I saw the article on WTVD.

Don Shea was a true gentleman and a consummate Wolfpack supporter.

I called him “N C 2 A Don Shea”, since that’s what he called that institution. I don’t know if he ever got on board with “N C double-A”. 🙂

Never met him. He was certainly an institution in the Triangle sports scene.
