WR Valdes-Scantling No Longer on Football Roster

Marques Valdes-Scantling

There hasn’t been an official release from NC State yet but the GoPack.com roster has been updated and it no longer includes WR Marques Valdes-Scantling. As we’ve seen in the past most of the time this means that player is no longer on the team but occasionally means they are suspended and have to earn their way back.

In the case of MVS, he was thrown into the fire his freshman year and responded well but this year struggled to break into the rotation and when he did was plagued with drops.

NC State loses Hines and MVS but still returns 3 of its top 5 WRs (Dayes, Alston, Cherry).

ROSTER ADDITIONS

The 8 early enrollees are now listed on the roster as well as a few position changes for Garrett Bradburry & Coult Culler who are both now listed as DTs.

Is he going to Yale too? Is Yale recruiting our receivers?
Gonna need somebody who can catch the long ball.

Not to be ‘too’ critical, but we might need someone to throw the long ball. Hope that is a point of emphasis this spring. At least overthrows aren’t picked off…

SeaWolf, I had a 28ft pursuit at MC, which we named “SeaWolf”. Script letters red with grey edge. Was truly beautiful. Later got a 32 ft boat and found out larger wasn’t necessarily better.

He had a promising freshman year and a lot of drops this year. I think the basic ability is there. Hope the change of scenery works out for him. The new WR coach has some work to do.

This is true. He dropped too many passes this year. He looked better as a freshman.

I love talking Wolfpack football and comparing points of view. With all due respects IMO our offense is not “long ball” oriented. With 2 new tackles to develop we don’t need to be running deep routes with Jacoby running for his life.

With players like Dayes, Thornton, Samuels, and Grinnage already on the roster and Gallaspy, Hines and maybe Frazier coming, offensively I expect the emphasis will be on getting the ball in the hands of playmakers in space and of course finding the ‘right’ combination of OL.

Oh, we’ll have a deep threat or 2 but that won’t be our emphasis IMO.

Man I would love it if those new RB’s were ok Redshirting. Dayes Thornton, and Samuels are good enough backs to spread the rock around. When Thornton leaves the program after next year I would love having a bridge year with Dayes, Samuels, and the newbys.

Not being sarcastic, but maybe I’m crazy. I guess if the new guys are better then they should play… but for the program would spacing and their own development be better if they sat? Just curious.

i aqree in general, but if we don’t have a long ball threat, opposing defenses will just stack the box and take away our running strength. That may be your point when you say:

Oh, we’ll have a deep threat or 2 but that won’t be our emphasis IMO.

In any event, our run blocking was superior and pass blocking has been suspect. I hope we have both next year.

    Thanks for jumping in!

Regarding redshirting, I’d like to see our skill position players [4 & 5 star] enrolling early and ready to go their freshman year. Our lines be sufficiently deep so as to be able to red-shirt nearly every incoming OL and DL with the occasional freak coming in every other year or so who doesn’t need maturing.

I occasionally find myself thinking in terms of the “old” Wolfpack and thinking about being good enough (good enough, isn’t that the old thinking?) to redshirt a few players.

Since this is the Valdes-Scantling thread I’m going to give my point of view — an optimistic point of view. First things first. MVS played as many downs as any WR and more than most. Why was that? The boy could and did block. Failure to block has curtailed more than one skill-player’s PT or in some cases added to his PT. Bo Hines had very low PT compared to what his receiving skill would seem to warrant. Our run game did pick up and we got good blocking all the way around. It won’t just the OL. I don’t know if Hines could block or not but if I had to bet money, I’d go with his not being a good blocker.

So what’s up with MVS? He sounds like someone who is disappointed in himself, doesn’t want to leave but is doing so based on the past. He’s for sure, whether he means to or not, giving the coaches time to talk him into staying. With a new WR coach coming in Ramos and others can all have a fresh start.
