N.C. State vs. La. Tech – 7pm

N.C. State Wolfpack (9-3) vs. La. Tech Bulldogs (8-3) – 7pm @ PNC Arena; Tv: Espn3 only

Louisiana Tech team page ; GoPack game preview with links to game notes and stats

The Wolfpack will look to get back in to the win column tonight at home against Louisiana Tech … After losing the “basketball game” against West Virginia on Saturday night in Madison Square Garden, the Pack return home to face another tough opponent in the Bulldogs. N.C. State struck out in their only road/neutral games in the non-conference portion of the schedule, so protecting home court now becomes that much more important.

La. Tech enters this contest having faced one common opponent with N.C. State – a 65-52 win over Jackson St. Two of their three losses have come against decent opponents, coming close but falling short at both Temple and Syracuse; the Bulldogs also lost at UL Lafayette. La. Tech doesn’t have any signature victories to speak of this season. Given the Bulldogs’ schedule, any hope of competing for an at-large NCAA berth may already be by the wayside – unless they basically run the table.

That’s not to suggest that La. Tech isn’t a pretty good team. The Bulldogs returned the majority of the team nucleus that won 29 games a season ago.  The ’13-’14 edition of La. Tech finished in a four-way tie for first in C-USA, garnering the 1 seed in the C-USA Tournament before falling short to Tulsa in the title game. Even with the high number of victories, La. Tech’s overall schedule strength relegated them to the NIT.

This season, La. Tech was the consensus pick to win C-USA. The Bulldogs’ main challengers look to be Old Dominion and UTEP; Tulsa has moved on to the AAC. Part of the reason La. Tech was generally picked to win the conference was due to their retention of head coach Michael White. White, in his 4th season at La. Tech, flirted with the openings at both Missouri and Tennessee after the close of last season. White is on pace to record his third 20+ win season at La. Tech in four seasons and will likely be a rumored name for any potential power conference job opening after the season. Local tie: White is the son of Duke AD Kevin White.

As for style of play – guess what? They press. After handling Tennessee’s pressure fairly well, the Pack melted down in the first half against the physical, unrelenting pressure of West Virginia before looking mostly competent in the 2nd half. So, for the Wolfpack, another test – and opportunity – to get better and beat pressure.

Let’s see what happens! Hopefully the Wolfpack can put together a good game and enjoy the Christmas break from a basketball point of view. The Pack won’t be in action again until a week from tonight on December 30th. Please share your thoughts, enjoy the game, and Go Pack!

Nice write up WP! I hope our kids wear the right pair of cleats tonight. I’ll be eating oysters and drinking heavily with the in laws tonight. I may need a pair of long spikes myself.

    ..Pup…

Did you get a chance to look at the Injury Report this week?

Who’s still battered and bruised from last Saturday night’s mugging ?

Thanks Fastback :). I’m jealous – both oysters and drinking are wufpup favorites.

Haha Bill – As far as I know all players are available to see the field tonight … er, I meant court. I was able to catch some of the Gottfried radio show last night and the WVa game dominated the discussion. They talked about a lot of things we discussed on the game and recap threads. Apparently the game was some experience for them … kinda like it was for us viewing it 🙂

    yep…. I would trade inlaws for oysters… any day…
besides my inlaws treated me better than they did my wife…
    … I wish they were still around…
    ——————-
Pup… I’m thinking we ain’t all looking at this right…
Talked with a few kids home from school (State) last couple days …

My sense is that the Kids on the bball team – those fr & sophs –
are “learning GOTT && Companys ‘systems’ as fast as they can…

… and they needed to experience the full range of what college ball offers which includes games like WVa…

Apparently some of ’em ain’t learning… as fast as anybody (including Coach) would like or think they should…
but I’m pretty sure about a couple of things…

    1. They didn’t learn jack in high school… that would help them now…
2 GOTT && Company are on the job 24/7 and they ain’t gonna quit on this team…
    3. The kids ain’t gonna quit either… 100% – All in the da pool… No headcases… this season… for which Coach is damn happy. (see below)
    4. When Anthony or Anya or really anybody ‘reverts’ to their old ‘bad habits’ it’s really just a matter of instinct taking over when they under pressure… more games should fix that slowly…

    ___________

    Speaking of kids…
Did I tell ya’ll my daughter (the State grad) bumped into CALVIN while Christmas shopping last week… old CALVIN has a new ‘baby’ !!

She also said DeShawn Painter was playing ball in Belgium now.

That’s right… DeShawn is making good money and CALVIN is changing diapers…
My the kids do grow up fast … don’t they fellas ?

Never been a fan of oysters, so no deal for me. Clams, scallops, shrimpies and anything with claws or fins works tho.
But sadly (or not) I traded the inlaws and the ex a while ago for, well….sanity I suppose.

LaTech is no pushover, but I’m nevertheless looking for the Pack to come out strong tonight and assert themselves.

If I were Skip Holtz, my guys will be in as aggressive a zone allowable.

Pressure on the edge and double teams on the wing.

Non-State fans have really poo-pooed our schedule because they don’t follow basketball except when their teams play. I think Gott should be given a ton of credit for scheduling ‘easy’ games with teams that are tournament-bound, just like we should expect to be. Tonight is another example of a team that will vie for their own conference championship. By season’s end, we’ll look at the Purdue loss as by far the worst OOC loss.

Haha Calvin with a baby … good for him.

Sacco, Purdue very may wind up being our worst OOC loss. Fans – especially of other teams – can make fun of our schedule as much as they want, but a lot of them are casual ‘front-running’ fans who wouldn’t know Wake Forest from a low major.

    Gott has scheduling down pat.

    firstrow is working fine… pup…

It appears that PASS OR SIT in in full effect tonight…

Both Lacey and Cat have dribbled under the basket and out the other side without shooting…

    We are getting some rebounds…
    Otherwise… it’s our traditional ‘rope-a-dope’ during the first four…

0-6 won’t last for long after everybody has made a Pass or Two..
