The 2nd best magazine cover ever

In this world of constant need for immediate analysis, as well as putting things in historical perspective…immediately (just think about how many talking heads on ESPN or some other network talk about a just completed NFL game for example), there is this rush to declare what just happened to be “the greatest ever.” When I saw a current magazine cover, my initial reaction was WOW. But, let’s get real, without any doubt the greatest magazine cover in regards to athletics is this:

1983_si

But after I thought about it some, now we have one that ranks second.

unc_no_class

This is from the Bloomberg Businessweek magazine. One of their writers, Paul Barrett, has been investigating the scandal since January 2. The article that is in the current issue of the magazine discusses the problems at UNC for both the student-athletes and whistle blower. He has put the scandal in a wider net than the N&O ever could, not that we are denigrating any of Dan Kane’s great work.

This started out in July 2010. But please remember, this will all be over by Friday.

What makes the article and cover even better – the Chairman of the Board of Bloomberg sits on the unx BOT.

I would actually rank “End Of An Era” ahead of it as well.

April 1974 SI Cover I agree with Texpack. Follow this link to see 6’4″ David Thompson scoring over 6’11″ Bill Walton

So I’m a bad typist and not real tech savy. Hopefully the 3rd time is the charm.

I actually had the full size poster of the SI cover, and I got Jimmy V to sign it (I was in 7th grade at the time). Then, when I went to State my freshman year, I foolishly put it up on my wall in Sullivan dorm. Needless to say, it got torn up just like everything in a dorm room. I should have had it under glass and put away for when I was older and wiser.

I have both mags, and rate the End of An Era cover better.

I have Thompson’s and Burleson’s autographs on the ’74 cover. Any chance I could get Walton’s John Hancock on it, and if so, how would I go about it?

    ^ Nice.

And donate it to a Jimmy V Foundation fundraising auction.

If you get a chance to see the magazine look at the back cover: a full page deodorant ad. Seems rather appropriate don’t you think?
