NC STATE at CLEMSON Preview

Time: 7:00 pm
TV: ESPNU
Announcers: Tom Hart, Cory Alexander

Clemson…All Defense + Zero Offense + 2nd slowest team in the country = ZZzzzzzzz. Basically it’s Miami all over again. The Tiggers are currently on a 3 game losing streak (@SU, @ND, UVA). Brad Brownell has the Tigers in a very familiar position to Wolfpack fans, betting the teams they are supposed to beat and losing to all the “good” teams. Brownell is taking a page out of the old philosophy, if you don’t have the talent then slow it down to limit possessions and play tough defense.

Probable Starters:

#12 Rod Hall (6-1 210 JR) GUARD – Clemson’s primary ball handler with a tremendous assist rate of 26.5% and shoots the ball pretty good. While he’s only taking about half the shots that McDaniels is taking he maintains a very respectable ORtg of 114. Rod is one of only three players who play more than half the game at 80% (McDaniels 80%, Nnoko 60%).
#21 Demarcus Harrison (6-4 200 JR) GUARD – Harrison is usually in for less than half the game but is decent while out there, while he’s a good FT shooter (.881) he’s struggling inside the arc (.342). He could really stand to take less shots but let’s not tell him that before tonight, mmmKaaayyyy.
#32 K.J. McDaniels (6-6 200 JR) FORWARD – Primary scorer, 3 pt shooter, rebounder, and blocker, all while sporting a nice 113 ORtg, which is surprising since he’s 30% of the team’s offense.
#5 Jaron Blossomgang (6-7 215 FR) FORWARD – He’s a pretty good rebounder and has a sub-100 ORtg. There’s really not much to say about him other than at .548 FT% I suggest fouling him.
#33 Josh Smith (6-8 260 SO) CENTER – Yeah ummmmm…no earthly idea why he is starting (ORtg 70.8) but hey, not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Maybe he’s taking Nnoko’s spot since he’s out with the flu, whatever the reason he may be “Unknown Player has career game against Pack” guy.

Series Notes

• The last two games between Clemson and NC State in Littlejohn Coliseum have been decided by a total of four points; in 2012, Andre Young hit the game-winning three in overtime to lift Clemson to a 72-69 win; last year, Scott Wood buried a baseline three in the final seconds to give the ‘Pack a 58-57 victory.
• Clemson has won four of the last five in Littlejohn, including in 2011 when the Tigers trailed by as much as 19 in the first half.
• NC State leads the series 99-48
• NC State has won the last two meetings
• Last season’s 58-57 victory for NC State was the first Wolfpack win in Littlejohn Coliseum since 2006-07.
• Landry Nnoko missed his first career game against Virginia on Saturday and is listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game due to the flu.

Fun Facts

When leading at the half: Clemson 12-0, NCSU 13-3
When leading with 5:00 left: Clemson 14-1
When shoots better/same as opponent: NCSU 15-2
When has more/same FT attempts: NCSU 9-0
Clemson is 10-2 at home. NCSU is 4-5 on the road.

ADVANTAGE

Clemson plays mostly man defense and if they stick to it I think Barber can get more playing time then against the zone. Overall Clemson’s defense is better than the Pack’s offense, the Pack simply has to shoot the ball better from behind the 3 and at the FT line.

This is going to be FUGLY. If the Pack can learn that defensive rebounding will prevent the Tiggers from scoring then it should be an “easy” night.

PREDICTION

KenPom Predictor and Vegas both like Clemson by 4. If this team was pissed off after Saturday night (and still is) then I say the Pack wins. If the Pack sat in their lockers and cried about the game then the season is over.

Gottfried’s team aren’t ever going to be much better on defense than what you see. But the offense has dropped from a top-10 offense to 75-100…Throw in turnover problems, recipe for what we see.

Far from an aberration, this is consistent with what we’ve seen most of the year.

I think we know which game was an aberration.

I’m not mad about this one. Getting the team up for this game was a tall order as our hearts were ripped to shreds at Cuse. Cuse beat us twice. Now it can’t be three times or else the season really will be over. We will regroup and try to mount a charge, but we absolutely must beat Pitt and/or UNC.

So how did the refs screw us this time?

I bet we had it in the bag until a couple of pivotal calls put us down 17……………………

We were ahead at the half. CU abused WBS to start the second, we couldn’t score, and it was downhill from there. Gottfried threw darts.

Clemson outscored State by 4 from the floor, by 13 from the FT line.

State: 19 fouls, Clemson 26 FTs
Clemson: 18 fouls, State 14 FTs

They won’t win games unless they attack the basket. They cannot shoot the ball from the arc, from the mid-range, or from the line, but by drawing fouls it MAY affect the defense played by the opponent.

Not that it matters….this season is toast. UNX wins by 30 in our place, and a Wednesday loss in the ACCT is the finale.

…. I do not disagree with anything written above…

We came out flat at the opening and took most of half to get going..
Coach Gott gets us back in the game single-handedly with some quick thinking and junk defenses…
We have a one point lead at halftime…. 33-32.

So much for the ‘Cuse effect…
We all are thinking we have this game won..

We come out flat again…. we go 3:21 before scoring any second half points…
Once the ice is broken… we start trading baskets at the rate of 3 for 2 so after
    five minutes we’re down six… 43 – 37…

Then the next 1:21… CUZ gets a def. rebound, makes a foul, a turnover, missing another jumper and Turner makes a turnover and the Tiggers score a three pointer and a dunk to go up 48-37 with 13:47 left and Coach GOTT calls a Timeout to discuss something he sees on the floor.

We don’t see any perceivable adjustments from the bench…

We come back and basically trade baskets (8-5) for the next four minutes … the score’s 56-42 tiggers with 10:28 left and CUZ goes on a run and scores seven points in the next 1:10 to cut the lead to 56-49… and Clempson calls a timeout…with 9:10 left..

Coach Gott in the huddle still talking about something he’s seeing on the floor…
From there the bottom falls out, the wheels come off, the tiggers never look back

We’re stuck on 49 for the next 6:51 until CUZ gets a jumper at 2:31 left in the game and the score is 68-51. CUZ adds a three pointer with 26 seconds left to score 5 of the Pack’s last 7.

Any body wonder what Coach was talking about during those timeouts??
    ______________

I am really surprised nobody here has played the — “So goes CUZ — So goes the PACK” — card, yet.

Perhaps, therein lies the key to this meltdown.

We’ve been talking about it all season…
    the split personalities…
    the ying an yang…
taking the ball/game and letting the ball/game find you…

CUZ GOTT his Twenty tonight (21st time this season)…
to go with his 6 turnovers and 4 fouls and tremendous defensive play….

Radio guys said …. “tonight was the hardest CUZ ever worked in his life to get Twenty…”
That’s BS… cause he got 7 of them on that one minute spurt at the 10 minute mark and 5 more during garbage time… hat means he got 8 points in the other 36-37 minutes of play.

There’s a reason… CUZ ain’t made ACC player of the week yet this season….
And it might have something to do with what Coach was talking about in those huddles….

If our remaining opponents think shutting down CUZ is the key to victory… they couldn’t be more wrong…. Forget that… just play CUZ straight up… he can’t beat you by himself — most nights — and take the rest of the team out of the game… that’s what you do.

And the easiest way to do that is to encourage the CUZ on five plays…
    _________________

I have noticed this one thing about GOTT & Company…
if you play for them and they think that you are getting hardheaded…
they will let you stay on the court until you embarrass yourself…
and damn the scoreboard and the outcome in the process….

Before you disagree with that, check with ANTHONY about what really happened in Chapel Hill a couple of Saturdays ago…. or call Lo or CALVIN/CJ somewhere over in Europe and pop that question…

Anybody else wonder what Coach was talking about during those timeouts??
And anybody else wonder why after a very creative first half… GOTT & Company mostly watched the second half ??

Going back to Man D after capturing the lead with 2 different zones, is quite a puzzler.
