RIP, BCS

Here’s a nice, short summary of the history — drama, really — of the BCS and its short-lived predecessors the Bowl Coalition and Bowl Alliance, and how it’s changed the landscape of college football over the past 20 years (AL.com):

The Bowl Championship Series, age 16, dies Dec. 8.

It was born in the SEC offices of Birmingham, Ala., as a tool to consolidate power and wealth and create more interest in college football’s regular season and postseason. The BCS was preceded in death by its brothers, the Bowl Coalition and Bowl Alliance.

When the final BCS standings are released Sunday, excitement, frustration, confusion and money will be at the BCS’ bedside upon death. Survivors include the College Football Playoff. In lieu of flowers, enjoy more high-stakes games and different controversies in 2014.

I don’t think you can easily pick the 4 best teams this year, so same situation IMHO next year. Maybe top 6 is easy, but not top 4. Still going to have the same issues.

It will expand to 16 eventually (but not soon enough for me). It’s still better to debate who’s 4 or 5 than it is to debate who’s 2 or 3.

^Eight’s not a bad number IMO, but I think 16 would be great.

4 would be pretty easy this year – FSU, Bama, Aubie/Mizzou winner, Ohio State (or if tOSU loses, then Okie State). At least better than leaving the SEC (easily the best league) out in the cold.

16 would be awesome, the plan I outlined several years ago is still the best, in my view. Works for 1-AA, the well-run bowls survive as football’s NIT.

^ I recall Beej’s outline. It would work most famously.

The cool thing is after all these years, college presidents can shed the ” interference with education ” cloak.

Interesting tweet about BGSU coach being on Ron Wellman’s radar screen. This is really going to be a shoot out between NIU and BGSU. Obviously BGSU did not get the memo that they were supposed to bow down and kiss the cleats of the undefeated #14 NIU lads.

Wonder WHERE the Ex NIU coach is tonight? Bet he is watching this.

HOPE he is out recruiting RB’s and can “guarantee” MORE PT for them since Shad done got in the dog house….

It is probably not really fair to make jokes about Shad….but it does relieve the tension.

The comment from some one about him getting an award from the Sweet Caroline was funny…..Wonder if it was the Hercules trophy or the John Holmes plaque?

    4 then 8 then 16…. it’s a process, gentlemen and inevitable.

Remember when the NCAA bball tournament was for conference champions only (16 teams), then 48, now 64 or 66 or 68… idk… sixty something ….??

    Money follows money.

Mods… Are we going to have a

    OK….

How about something POSITIVE about FB.? Now wouldn’t THAT be uplifting.

I just got an email with this link.

    Really great article on Philip…..

Pretty tough competition…..especially old “XI”, Jimmie Johnson.

Looks like Rod Carey’s reign of terror is about to come to an end. BGSU up by 20 with about 10:17 to go.

Jordan Lynch done moved way DOWN the list…..Winston looks like a shoe in now…..wonder if David Cuttcliff will just FORFEIT and NOT be embarrassed.

That was sarcasm…..so don’t jump on it and waste bandwidth. I like the comparison to a certain underdog in 1983 and hope that David has a tactical Nuke prepared for his sling….

Been a LONG, LONG time since I yelled “GO DUKE”. Maybe in 1958 or so when our high school band was invited for “Band Day” to a football game. Learned the Duke Fight song and can still remember a few notes for the trombone…..

The Ball will be over tomorrow night at 7:59pm and Cinderella is going to get wasted and laid.

Here’s an emo epitath for the 2013 football season:

    Sadness is our state.

Cinderella is going to get wasted and laid.

By a guy who said he loved her yet can’t even remember what she looked like at the party.

  15. Alpha Wolf 12/07/2013 at 10:52 AM #

All I know is that I am going to be a huge Michigan State fan later on. Ohio State fans are unbearable and their tears are like roses to me…

  16. Wufpacker 12/07/2013 at 12:10 PM #

    Well that didn’t take long.
Sooners apparently not ‘warmed up’ just yet.

    Ooops…flag….holding negates it.

    Still though.

  17. Wolfanatic 12/07/2013 at 12:21 PM #

Poor Dook……FSU probably won’t even “wet the sponge.” The FSU “power surge” will dim Duke’s hopes rather quickly. Expect rain, just to complete the ambiance of this scheduled execution.

  18. bill.onthebeach 12/07/2013 at 1:21 PM #

    ^Alpha…

G-B’ed might be a better way to put it…

Then the NOLES can hire Mike Nifong… to defend them.

  19. Alpha Wolf 12/07/2013 at 1:22 PM #

FSU should win, but I think Duke may surprise people with their tenacity.

All I know is that I wish we had hired Cutcliffe. He is my kind of football coach.
