Big Resume building victory at Tennessee for the Wolfpack

The Wolfpack just seems to be getting better and better. The chemistry this team shows is excellent. Tonight, they went to Knoxville as an eight point underdog and had an extremely impressive victory over a Tennessee team that is expected to be in the NCAA Tournament in March. NC State lead wire-to-wire in a 65-58 victory that had TJ Warren lead the Pack with 21 points.

The Pack jumped out to first half leads of 6-0, 19-11, 30-15, and lead 37-20 at the half. It was the best first half I have seen the Pack play on the road since February 16, 2012 at Cameron Indoor. We won’t discuss the last 11 minutes of that debacle though. Nor will we discuss Dan Dakich’s obsession with last year’s team. Hey Dan, that was last year. Let’s try to stay on point and talk about this year’s team.

The previous road game had the Pack unable to come through in the final minutes against Cincinnati. Tonight though was different. Mark Gottfried’s team would not be denied. Each player that played for State played well.

TJ Warren – 21 points and 11 rebounds in spite of dealing with good defense by the Vols’ Josh Richardson.
Cat Barber – 12 points and 4 assists. 4 of his buckets were big time as Warren was on the bench and the Vols were threatening to make the game close.
Jordan Vandenberg – 4 blocks in 12 minutes. Early foul trouble didn’t stop him from making his presence felt against the bigs for the Vols.
Lennard Freeman – 9 rebounds in 20 minutes. Continues to be a Dennis Rodman type rebounder for the Pack.
Desmond Lee – 10 points. Slashed and drove the ball to the rim early and often.
Beejay Anya – 5 blocks and one mean half hook for a bucket. Between Vandenberg and Anya, the Pack dominated the much more celebrated frontcourt of Stokes and Maymon.
Kyle Washington – 5 points, 7 rebounds, and abundant energy. Freeman and Washington would not let anyone else get a rebound. Washington brought a great motor tonight.
Ralston Turner – 5 points. Made a couple of big shots.
Tyler Lewis – Ran the team well when called upon.

The defense was outstanding tonight. Tennessee only shot 29% from the field, and was a horrendous 3-24 from behind the arc. Part of that was the Wolfpack defense for sure. 12 blocks (9 by either Vandenberg and Anya) was inspiring. Having seen Tennessee play several times this year, and a lot last year, the key in my opinion was to jump out to an early lead on Tennessee. When that happens, they stop going down to the post and start jacking up threes. Outside of Jordan McRae (who should have been the SEC Player of the Year last year), there is not yet another trusted outside shooter. The statistic ESPNU put up early in the 2nd half was prescient. When the Vols shoot more than 15 3-pointers in game, they are 0-3 (now 0-4). When shooting 15 or less 3-pointers, the Vols are 6-0. Tonight it was 3-24. Therefore, a Wolfpack win.

Tonight was a great win for the Wolfpack for several reasons:

1. Goal every game is to be 1-0 when the clock strikes 00:00.
2. Now have a 6 game winning streak.
3. Confidence soars with road win against a probable NCAA Tournament team
4. Resume building win for hopeful NCAA berth

This tweet by @NCStateFootball sums up the evening.

Agree Alpha. It’s flagrant. When I went to the wral website, they had front page update of the unc game vs Texas in progress…as if #1 and #2 in the country were playing and everbody needed to know. That game was no more significant to this area than the ours vs UT. We won on the road and UNC sh1t the bed…at home…again.

FWIW, i think the rankings right now are a joke. Alot of teams ranked on reputation and their recruiting class. I am NOT impressedwith UNC’s wins. The Kentucky win? Meh. I think our freshmen, though maybe not as talented, are figuring it out quicker. Michigan State looked like they had not practiced or played since last season. Honestly, did not see the Louisville game.

I can understand Tyler’s feelings, actually, I would think less of him if he wasn’t some kind of disappointed/upset. The public airing of those feelings however, is a big no no.

But reality is reality. Barber is simply better.

You only get 4 years of playing college ball and the clock is ticking. We understand, Tyler, but this one has already started, so cowboy up and make the best of 2013/2014. You’re a talent and we hope you stay, but sincere best wishes if transferring and more playing time is what you determine is best for you after this season.

You get a pass, this time. All bets are off if there’s a next time.

“I haven’t seen Tyler Lewis look like he is taking command of the team at any point.”

Some can lead from the bench, others gotta play.

    RE: kids and twitter….

    I got both…
but don’t mess with twitter much… the kids, on the other hand, are a full time job.

Here’s the “odd” thing about kids and twitter.

In the kid’s world… where they really get to know people less and less, they are more and more likely to tweet, post, etc, etc, etc, intimate personal stuff…. like their “feelings” or a selfie.

As important perhaps, in their world where “everything” is just a click away and instant and fleeting…. they have little concept of time and the long term ramifications of anything or the collateral damage or good that might result.

And just as important, they think “everything” has a “Back” or “Undo” button attached.

    —————

Ya’ll want to guess how many times my 16 yr old daughter has told me…
    “Oh Daddy… it’s just a ‘tweet’ … it doesn’t MEAN anything.” ?

As the famous Presbyterian minister liked to say….
    “Cogitate on that….”.

Just something else us “dinosaurs “probably ought to get used to.

    Alpha…

I THOUGHT that Capital Broadcasting Corporation (CBC or WRAL) was removed from MOST of their involvement when Learfield became the media “outlet”. The coach’s show moved and Learfield is the logo that we see. GoPack.com resides on the CBC-Raleigh Server but I could not figure out who owns the domain name. CBC also “owns” or maybe is the vendor for the GoPack store…but it you order online, it reverts to somebody else….I recall that it is CBSCollegeStore.com…but they are interlinked so you can do local pick-up’s on CERTAIN items….but the store does NOT always have what is online and vice-versa.

I also think (memory) that WRAL only broadcast our games. The disclaimer uses Learfield..again I THINK. So, I have NO idea who owns Wolfpack Marketing. The Network Control folks used to be local…but that seems to change, from game to game…and I do not hear the same names.

    If anyone knows…please jump in…

    OK…bill.onthebeach….and others….

Here are TWO excerpts from a popular Christmas Song…

Take a look in the five and ten glistening once again
With candy canes and silver lanes aglow

A pair of Hop along boots and a pistol that shoots
Is the wish of Barney and Ben

Wonder how many of us “DINO’s” recognize the items mentioned…..?

Bing Crosby’s “Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas”

Which I was listening to WRAL for several hours yesterday afternoon doing my Santa Elf Pre-Assembly work on my GS’ SURPRISE SANTA Gifts….., I heard the song and the lyrics really hit home as it reminded me of many Christmas Eve’s where I put together stuff and my wife would not let me do it ahead of time as there were no places with adequate security controls to put the assembled stuff. One of them was a Barbie Camper outfit and a Star Wars layout with several LARGE ships and stations.

Each had about 100+ STICKERS or Decals that had to placed EXACTLY and we spent most of the early morning getting them affixed….after snapping and screwing and testing the batteries….

    Memories….as Barbara would say….

With Vandy back and Anya coming along this team is ahead of schedule and could be a pretty good team down the stretch.

I hope we have a good turnout tomorrow for the ECU game. These guys are starting to come together as a unit and roles are beginning to become apparent. This game and the Tigers will be another challenge and a step forward in the process. I like the energy of these young guys. With respect to Tyler Lewis, it is a long season and role players are as important as anyone on the team. I hope he realizes how critical his piece is to the whole unit.

….complete with a two year old 40 pound SALT CURED smokehouse ham cooked for two days and sliced so thin you can see thru it in little bitty biscuits made with baking soda and lard…..

One really funny thing about being a dinosaur is this…

‘All this crazy tech stuff the kids are into…
Didn’t we see all that and more on the JETSONS ??? ”

Getting back to the Tyler Lewis situation, Alpha Wolf is spot on. The kid is a defensive liability, and that is what seems to be limiting his playing time. With State playing man to man defense the majority of the time, Lewis is almost always over-matched, not only in size/height, but also in terms of a quicker first step. He was a defensive liability last year, and doesn’t seem to have taken many strides (sorry) in his defensive ability this year. As for his attitude, perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but the video of the locker room after the Tennessee victory with the celebratory atmosphere doesn’t really show a Tyler that seems to be happy with the win, no, to the contrary perhaps, and I stress perhaps. See for yourself.

He doesn’t look excited but then again we can’t see his expressions or even if he is clapping etc. He does appear a little more calm though. Hard to tell really….

Back to the title and speaking of resume building…Lady Pack downed #12 LSU tonight. Led most of the game. #34 Gattling was a beast with bout 24 pts dominating inside. The girls are now 11-1 and I suspect will crack top 25 next rankings. Wow what a difference a coach makes.

The Men’s team was there. Thought that was interesting.
