NC State 40 Louisiana Tech 14 – what happened on Saturday?

Of course, the big news of the day was (1) that the Wolfpack looked absolutely fantastic in the first quarter with quarterback, Brandon Mitchell leading the offense, and (2) Brandon Mitchell’s broken foot and injury report that indicates he will miss at least 4 to 6 weeks after having surgery on his foot. (Link to WRAL story)

The other big news of the day was the strong play of the true freshmen wearing red and white. All told, Coach Doeren used ELEVEN TRUE FRESHMEN on Saturday. (Anyone want to discuss the stable of ‘talent’ that the last coaching staff left behind?) The impact of the freshmen were felt from the game’s first pass when a new #1, Marques Valdes-Scantling caught a 26 yard pass from Brandon Mitchell and took it up the sidelines into Louisiana Tech territory. MVS ultimately led the Wolfpack with 87 yards receiving.

True freshman, Matt Dayes became just the third NC State player in history to three or more touchdowns in a game while generating 84 yards on the ground on 17 carries. Dayes and Tony Creecy‘s running helped State to 542 yards of total offense, which was the most in a season opener since racking up 592 yards vs. Western Carolina in 1990 – in the heart of Dick Sheridan’s program. Louisiana Tech finished with 321 total yards but was crushed in time of possession 19 minutes to 41 minutes for State – a key component to any game played at a high pace in such heat.

The News & Observer highlighted the play of the freshmen in this good piece.

“They’re 18-year-old true freshmen and they’re playing like they’re fourth-year seniors,” quarterback Pete Thomas said.

They were two of 11 true freshmen who played Saturday in their first college game. Doeren made no secret in training camp he would go young and see what he had on the roster.

That was evident when Valdes-Scantling split wide on the first play, instead of senior Quintin Payton or junior Bryan Underwood.”

Although some negative-nellies may choose to criticize Wolfpackers for not returning to the stadium in the second half, I choose to focus on the fact that more than 54,000 fans showed up for a 12:30pm game on the last holiday weekend of the summer. Coach Doeren choose to express appreciation for the support as well in this article from the N&O that focused more on his role on Saturday.

Doeren might as well get used to this sort of thing. Wolfpack fans, meanwhile, will not find it difficult to get used to what they saw on the field in N.C. State’s 40-14 win over Louisiana Tech – 542 yards of offense, a defense that forced four turnovers and an early killer instinct on both sides of the ball that stunned the Bulldogs.

It was a two-way street, with Doeren equally impressed by the Wolfpack fans and Carter-Finley atmosphere.

“I walked into the coaches’ locker room today and said, ‘If these guys don’t play sky-high today, we’ve got issues,’ because it was a great environment coming up to the stadium,” Doeren said. “I knew they’d play their butts off. This is why they came here.”

Despite massive turnover in both coaches and players, Louisiana Tech was no pushover, and Skip Holtz has more material to work with there than he did his first year at East Carolina while sorting through the wreckage John Thompson left behind. Given that, the professionalism of N.C. State’s performance, particularly given all the change Doeren has wrought, should not be underestimated.

Joe Ovies gave the Pack a solid B+ grade for the day. I think that is spot on.

This is where the Summer of Indecision will pay nice dividends for State. Both Thomas and Mitchell had been seeing essentially equal reps in camp, so the surrounding personnel is just as familiar with the guy who started number two on this morning’s depth chart.

Another surprise? The debut of Matt Dayes. The tailback had been highly touted for his performances in preseason camp. Some finish their freshman season with three touchdowns, Dayes finished the afternoon with three. One might expect a frosh, who just found the endzone thrice in his first time in a college uniform, might be a little exciteable after the fact. Not Dayes, who straight-faced his postgame interviews, to the point where some media even joked with him that he could lighten up and smile a little. That’s a great sign of maturity from a 13th grader, who expects himself to succeed.

[snip]

The lesser-discussed half during the offseason, the defense, came up clutch. Louisiana Tech converted only 2-of-10 third down attempts and the Pack thwarted two red zone drives with a couple of fumble recoveries, including one by Darryl Cato-Bishop in the endzone. Total yardage was close at the stat sheet at one point, but the Pack ended up outgoing the Bulldogs by more than 200 yards.

Granted, this might not have been the Louisiana Tech of yesteryear, so we might not find out the true measure of State until three weeks when Clemson comes to town. However, all things considered, the Doeren-era starts strongly in Raleigh. The performance wasn’t perfect, i.e., settling for four field goals, inability to stretch the field vertically, but does any team ever play spotless? I bet Paul Johnson is finding something to pick apart right now, and he opened the season with a 70-0 W. So, if we’re giving grades, the Wolfpack earn a solid B+.

With all of the good things that happened in Raleigh on Saturday, leave it to ESPN and Heather Dinich to completely ignore the positives and de-prioritize the Doeren storyline and the strong play on both sides of the ball against a mid-major opponent for laughable storylines like Georgia Tech’s defense against Elon and a no-name receiver from Wake Forest who evidently can play real well against Presbyterian. Really?

Do we HAVE to have the advertisement banners covering the bowl appearances and Wolfpack players’ names that used to ring the inside of the stadium?

And why do we have the Notre Dame flag flying above the stadium? They are NOT a football-playing ACC member, and to my knowledge, football is the ONLY sport played in this stadium. Please take it down!

I for one am very impressed with the entire coaching staff. By splitting reps in practice more than prepared Thomas. IMO Wolfpack football has a bright future. Hats off to Dayes and correct me if I am wrong but didn’t he decommit at one time?

Great start for DD&Co.! Sure, there’s always lots of things to work out after the first game. But I was most pleased with what I saw and felt.

Speaking of flags, there was a shot on TV yesterday of the u*NC flag which seemed to be at half (or lower – appropriately!) mast. Anybody know what was going on there?

  4. Master 09/01/2013 at 6:03 PM #

Re: the UN flag at half mast, I believe they put more than one flag on several poles and the UNC flag obviously does not deserve to be on top.

The whole audio/video presentation is just cluttered. The band must really hate it, too.

And as long as passes out are the policy, you’ll seldom see C-F at capacity in the second half, especially games like yesterday.

  6. Greywolf 09/01/2013 at 6:30 PM #

Did anyone notice the absence of dropped passes?

Said with tongue-in-cheek: with Shirreff in perhaps we could put in a single wing or double wing series. Does Shirreff punt as well as run and throw. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a quick kick on 3rd down.

The noise from the scoreboard is a primary reason many people stay out of their seats as much as they can.

The “music” they select is C(RAP). I hate it and sometimes can’t even talk to the person beside me when it’s blaring. It gets worse (and louder) every season.

If they MUST play something, then how about the up-tempo Wolfpack fight song (Caissons Go Rolling Along)? The rap and hip-hop garbage that they keep pumping out at a million watts needs to be silenced, for good!

Give us either Wolfpack marching music or the band. The “Army Goes Rolling Along” theme would be appropriate for the military day next week.

All I ask is to turn down the volume and turn off the hip-hop. I believe most fans in C-F would agree with me.

My seats are in the NEZ and we complained last year. Maybe it was my imagination but the sound didn’t seem as quite as loud.

The students don’t come in until almost kick-off time and if there are more than 2 people who can tolerate rap, I can’t see them from my seat.

I thought it was a classy touch to override the coin toss audio with that wonderful public service announcement letting us fans know that we would be arrested if we went on the field. I guess there was some danger that someone would streak out on to the field before the game started and try to steal the coin used to toss.

  9. 13OT 09/01/2013 at 10:55 PM #

Don’t worry ’bout that coin, Greywolf. Nobody’s gonna try and storm the field to steal it until November 23.

Agree with the earlier comments…if they didn’t blare one more friggin song I’d be happy. I’d settle with just the band. Couple times still blaring on the hike. Really pissed me off.

    Gamewise…
Special teams I thought were strong.
Offense is OK…the QB who comes in just to run is stupid in my opinion. It was nice seeing him run over somebody once but after a few runs it was evident he would not pass and they became throw away plays.
Defense IMO is very suspect. If LaTech doesn’t fumble frequently probly closer at half. Defense looked really good at times but on the TD drives looked like a high school team was out there…hot knife through butter. Not sure how you can have such series and then turn around and play well. I think half our D line is stout…the LB group is slow to react…and I would pass the ball frequently on our DB’s.

  11. packalum44 09/02/2013 at 3:03 AM #

Defense is overrated or played poorly. Lucky to get those goaline turn over. Won’t happen against equal talent.

DD is blatantly better than TOB. Maximized our staff and playing true freshmen is strategically sound it helps recruiting and schools with top 20 aspirations should not recruit to 5th year like Wake. 5th year is not better than 4th year unless they were not talented to begin with.

Soooo glad Tom is gone he was awful on many levels.

“I guess there was some danger that someone would streak out on to the field before the game started and try to steal the coin used to toss.”

I knew times were hard, but that’s just plain apocalyptic.

  13. PackFamily 09/02/2013 at 8:02 AM #

I left the tailgate a few minutes late and missed the intro song. What was it?

  14. TheCOWDOG 09/02/2013 at 8:20 AM #

Actually, the D looked darn near as expected. Good up front, lacking in the middle and more than adequate in back. No news on the extent of Jones’ injury.

Turnovers are part of the game, especially good when the D forces them. Which they did. Johnson’s hit on the goal line was shoulder pad on ball.

    C. Ponder may question that goal line turnovers don’t happen against teams of equal caliber.

Here’s the thing about D in game 1. You have absolutey no film to work with. Not one, single reveal from your opponent ’til your crew. gets the game time adjustment.
This is especially true when the opponent happens to have a new staff on board from the previous years.

CD assessment echoed…and it’s not as if we will have to game plan to face real “ballaz” like La Tech was La Touch football. The TB was downright outstanding and if Holtz can get some kind of aerial attack they could really have strong showing.

I would not throw it all day against #25 in Red & White-in fact it would be smarter for teams to steer to the weak side of the field. Saturday was the first time I’ve seen a defenses core player line up at CB. He is so far and above the other back seven that its likely he will be near the top in tackles.

Only one game and now we get to see the DD era’s between game one and two process unfold. It wouldn’t though to see the best of the Freshman line up opposite of Burris so that Dantae Johnson can line up nearer to box.

First of all, I thought the SFN open thread had several humorous comments which in past years kept me from going insane. Secondly, our defense did not give up an 80 yard TD run on the opening play and as a result we didn’t have a coach saying that some players think they are better than they are and if one player had been in the right position the play would never of happened. Dixon is an excellent RB and I would not be disappointed if he was in our backfield. I thought the defense was very solid and swarmimg all over the place. Just when you thought, damn they are going to score, another State player(s) came in and shut it down either with a turnover or a tackle.

How many of you think we would have won that type of game in previous years???? People left the game because it was too hot! Our new coach rotated so many players on both sides of the ball we never, ever looked completely gassed. Many LT players looked wilted near the end and most of those guys were born, raised and practice in hell. Whatever you think, we must have a real conditioning coach for the first time in two decades.

There is a fine line between winning and losing. Yes, I saw many instances where that game could have been much closer or even a loss and yet something good happened each time. Many things to work on. Love this team.

I once lost a 1964 Fury III station wagon in the middle of a field but we had just crushed UNX at home so I just floated back to Bragaw.

    Decent running game.

I like the way DD is determined to get the ball in Smith’s hands.

Defense played ok at times but bigger stronger foes may spell trouble for this front.

Pete Thomas looks like a less mobile Tol Avery. Lots of back foot throws that sail.

It’s encouraging to see the skill position freshmen.

Looking forward to some Old Testament running to help between the tackles.

  18. JohnGalt78 09/02/2013 at 10:28 AM #

IMHO, the music was loud, but a little less than last year. Our side ran out if water. Probably ordered enough for a 6:00 game.

  19. ncsubraveheartman 09/02/2013 at 11:29 AM #

We looked great for Dave’s 1st game ever co-MVP’s are Dayes and Sade; Get well soon Brandon Mitchell we already miss you. Good Lord I’m just so happy for the season to be back!

Game was fun as always. There does seem to be some disconnect between what’s runnin’ on the jumbotron and what the fan’s actually need. The speakers may be too loud by the jumbotron but we could hardly hear the jamz in the student section (where it needs to be heard). They should consider putting a sound system in the south endzone by the students so they could turn down the other one and we could actually hear it. A good DJ will get the stadium bumpin, just look at the Clemson game when they selectively played “Jump Around”.

Also, it was a disgrace to hear the Darius Rucker “Wagon Wheel” rather than the original Old Crow Medicine Show version. Ideally, the band should play “Wagon Wheel” as our unofficial fight song and we all sing along.

Overall, great game, and I have a toga-tan to prove it.

    P.S.
I will be e-mailing athletics to see if they will let me have the student-section microphone to give pre-game speeches before all of the games.

  20. Clarksa 09/02/2013 at 1:33 PM #

The music was fine…y’all sound like a bunch of old farts (and I’m 40). Don’t judge the crowd and game atmosphere on a 90+ insane humidity day when we’re blowing out the other team. Wait till the Clemson game and see how things go…

I would also say please drop the Labor Day beach excuse for crowds…we have been giving UNC fans crap over that for years.

On the positive side, at least we’re discussing the game day atmosphere vs why we shouldn’t have punted with 3min to go in the game.

  21. packpowerfan 09/02/2013 at 5:09 PM #

Clarksa, I’m 25 and I hated the music. We Ready is a vestige of my freshman year of HS, and needs to be buried in the sands of time.

Either go all new, or all classic.

  22. Wolfgarden 09/02/2013 at 6:40 PM #

QB….Thomas should do well. Mitchell seemed and was more crisp and sharp with the plays. However with Mitchell out Thomas should get more preparation and will excel also!!!

  23. budfox88 09/03/2013 at 4:16 PM #

Game was awesome, except for losing BM, and the sound.

Music and sound system sucked…need to fire sound people immed…quit with the sound when the band plays…pick a genre that pumps up the team…and by god please don’t play that loud aXX crap when we are trying to snap the ball!!!!! Geez if youre gonna do that, do it to our opponents not the home team!!!! I had a pair or radio shack 6X9s in a wood box in Owen Dorm in 85 that didn’t crackle that much!!

It was too hot (typical mid day August game at ol CF…try a night game!), and the jumbotron was like a mosquito with a bullhorn in the ear…that’s why people left. My kids made it thru to mid 4th but wanted to leave in 1Q!!!

Other than that…the team and coaching (esp the play calling) looked great!
