As kid growing up, Ted Brown was one of my absolute favorite players so this makes me very happy indeed.

It was announced today that former Wolfpack great, and still all-time ACC rushing leader Ted Brown will be included in the 14 man 2013 class of inductees into the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame at the 56th NFF Annual Awards Dinner to be held on December 10, 2013.

One of the truly great runners of his era, Ted Brown dominated the Atlantic Coast Conference in the late 1970’s. He becomes the fifth member of the Wolfpack to enter the College Football Hall of Fame.

Brown left Raleigh as the most accomplished rusher in ACC history, holding the league’s career records for rushing yards (4,602) and touchdowns (51) – marks which he still holds today. The 1978 consensus First-Team All-America led N.C. State to three bowl games, including victories in the 1977 Peach Bowl and 1978 Tangerine Bowl, in which he garnered MVP honors. He capped off his senior year by rushing for his third consecutive 1,000-yard season and amassing 27 career 100-yard games. He was the first player in league history to earn First-Team All-ACC distinction all four years and was named the conference’s Rookie of the Year in 1975. Brown played under legendary Hall of Fame Coach Lou Holtz and coach Bo Rein.

The High Point, N.C., native was chosen in the first round of the 1979 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He spent eight years in the professional ranks, all with the Vikings. He finished his career as the fifth-leading rusher in franchise history (4,546 yards and 53 TDs).

He currently works as a juvenile probation officer in the Ramsey County (Minn.) court system and enjoys helping at-risk youth throughout the state. Brown was a 1995 inductee into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, and his No. 23 jersey was the first football jersey retired at NC State.

    Way past due. That kid was special.

    And I love that he was entered as one of the least pubbed.

    Furthermore, don’t tell me about the lack of football tradition around here.

    Could it not be argued that a lack of tradition is the reason he was under-pubbed?

    My dad owned a solid oak roll top desk with enough legroom depth underneath to allow for a huge 1950’s radio to sit on the floor on the back side. Between the ages of 4 and 12, I would roll back the chair and lay down to listen to many a State basketball and football game. The three solid walls provided my own personal sense around. We also had a 1964 Plymouth FuryIII station wagon we took dove hunting near Rockingham every September. We would always listen to the State game on the way back home. I vividly remember when Ted Brown played. My brothers and I would try to keep a running total of his yards both on the ground and through the air. Thank you Ted Brown for a lot of great memories and congratulations. You have been a Hall of Famer for a very long time before today.

    I got to talking to Tony Creecy’s father at halftime once. This was when his son was still a recruit with offers from nearly everywhere.

    I asked him what team he grew up following and he just said he loved ACC football and not particularly one team. He did mention that his all time favorite player was Ted Brown. Here’s hoping that he can see his son put a couple back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons together and bring a little of that old time magic to the game known as the rushing attack.

    I’ll also repeat – because it sounds so good: STILL the all-time ACC rushing leader. And that’s going on almost 40 years now!

    I remember when he shredded the vaunted Penn State defense for about 250 yards. All of his jerseys were ripped to shreds and he finished the game with a different number. He was a joy to watch. Tough, strong, low center of gravity and breakaway speed. Congrats Ted. Well deserved and way overdue honor.

    251 vs PSU. He ran out of tear away jerseys in that game. I remember it took Wally Ausley a few plays to get the word that Ted had a new number.

    Is he the second greatest Wolfpack football player of all time?

    May be the greatest! I know he’s the best I ever saw. I was In the stands when he rushed for 251 vs Penn St. Congratulations Ted. It’s way overdue!!
