ACC Awards, Notre Dame

The media voted…

Erik Green (Virginia Tech) as ACC Player of the Year (ACC.com).

Oliver Hanlan (Boston College) as ACC Freshman of the Year (ACC.com). Inexplicably, TJ Warren only got 12 of 77 votes.

Durand Scott (Miami) as ACC Defensive Player of the Year (ACC.com).

Jim Larranaga (Miami) as ACC Coach of the Year (ACC.com).

Also today, Notre Dame will now join the ACC on July 1, 2013, but will not begin it’s football scheduling agreement until 2014 (ACC.com).

Wonder who were the two jackholes who voted K and Huckleberry Hound (one vote each) as COY?

  2. eas 03/12/2013 at 2:51 PM #

That just goes to show you how screwed up the media is over the “blues”. Seriously…..

    75 votes for Larranaga
    1 vote for Coach K
    1 vote for OL ROY

You can’t just make this stuff up. A coach who WELL deserves the honor gets opposed by 2
D-bags who want to show their true colors.

Bret Strelow of the Fayetteville Observer said he voted for Krwqwohdqlsdnski.

Hanlan put up more points per game, but Warren was more productive in points per minute played. Also Warren shot a better shooting percentage and 3pt percentage than Hanlan. I’m glad to have TJ on our team for next year.

I don’t even remember Hanlan’s name being called when State played BC, nevermind getting any pub during the rest of the season.

While I hope he has the worst game of his career on Thursday, I am very happy to see Green get POY, he has absolutely earned that honor.

  7. Tau837 03/12/2013 at 5:12 PM #

Akil Mitchell should have been DPOY and didn’t even make the All Defensive team. He was:

    #1 in Defensive Rating
    #3 in Defensive Win Shares
#1 in Defensive Rebounding Percentage and #3 in Defensive Rebounds
#13 in Steals per game and #15 in Steal Percentage (ahead of Miller, Len, and Evans, who made the All Defensive team)

He only had 12 blocked shots, so apparently that’s why he was omitted. But he was the best defender on the best defensive team in the league and should have been DPOY.

I agree with the POY and COY choices and don’t have a problem with ROY, though I think others including Warren would have also been reasonable choices.

Wow. I’m really shocked that they actually gave it to Green. I support it wholeheartedly and think it’s the no-brainer choice, but I’m still surprised they actually did it.

I don’t have a problem with Scott winning DPOY, but you’re right that Mitchell should have received a lot more votes. Miami and Virginia both have fantastic defenses, and those guys are both big parts of them. It’s a coin flip between them in my eyes. Really though, if Julian Gamble played more minutes, I’d give it to him. He’s a phenomenal defensive player.

The ROY pick is a minor travesty. Hanlan had a fine year, but he basically won because he played the most minutes and took the most shots. Both TJ and Sulaimon had significantly better seasons, they just played on better teams and weren’t asked to be the top scoring option.

I was shocked as well at the votes for ROY, with Warren getting so few.

Evidently putting up the most points meant more to the folks who picked the ACC awards than all the other factors combined. I may be alone in my thinking here, but I still don’t understand why Seth Curry didn’t make the ACC First Team (he would’ve bumped Harris had I voted). And POY to me was a choice between Shane Larkin and Mason Plumlee, players who did far more in multiple categories than Green did for the Hokies. Aside from finishing with the nation’s highest PPG average, just what did Erick Green do for his team?

If Mason Plumlee got the most votes for 1st Team All-ACC, then it’s simply not logical to me that he didn’t win the POY award.

This looks to me like yet another case of “spreading the wealth around”.

It looks like the media members take a cursory look at the players’ stat pages without giving any thought as to why they are what they are and what it meant for their teams. POY should have probably been Plumlee, but I can see why they gave it to someone who had such a great scoring year.

ROY definitely should have been Sulaimon or Warren, with Warren more deserving for averaging less minutes and turnovers while averaging more points and rebounds (not to mention the impact it had on the Pack with the short bench). Hanlan had the ball in his hands so much more than them (9 min. per game), and his numbers are only slightly better. Dumb.

“Aside from finishing with the nation’s highest PPG average, just what did Erick Green do for his team?”

If you really want to know, I laid out a case for Green in this post from the forum: http://www.statefansnation.com/forums/search?cookie=bbinlinemod_nodes_search

In short, he puts up spectacular numbers while playing with easily the worst supporting cast in the league. Everyone knows he’s their only offensive option, and his numbers (both proficiency and efficiency) are still on par with the country’s best offensive players (who are all national POY candidates).

  12. Wufpacker 03/12/2013 at 8:05 PM #

Green is very deserving indeed and I too am pleasantly surprised the media gave it to him.

Damn sure wish we had him, and hope he doesn’t torch us too badly on Thursday.

” Aside from finishing with the nation’s highest PPG average, just what did Erick Green do for his team?”

Take a second to read that again. You can’t possibly say something like that with a straight face.

  14. Lumpy 03/12/2013 at 9:09 PM #

Oliver Hanlan? Really? Reminds me of the Ed Nelson over Julius Hodge vote in ’02.

  15. john of sparta 03/12/2013 at 9:32 PM #

    we always wonder who
    will have their career game
    against us. EG? Epic Game?

  16. Rick 03/13/2013 at 7:58 AM #

I have never even heard the name Hanlan and we played them twice. It seems an advantage to play on a crappy team for ROY but generally a disadvantage to play on a crappy team for POY

  17. Tau837 03/13/2013 at 8:42 AM #

“Aside from finishing with the nation’s highest PPG average, just what did Erick Green do for his team?”

Green is all over the ACC leader boards:

    #1 in minutes played
    #1 in points
#1 in field goals and field goal attempts
    #8 in field goal percentage
#7 in three point field goals and #8 in three point field goal attempts
#5 in three point field goal percentage
#1 in free throws and free throw attempts
    #3 in free throw percentage
    #6 in assists
    #6 in assist/turnover ratio
    #6 in steals
    #1 in player efficiency rating
#9 in effective field goal percentage
    #9 in true shooting percentage
    #4 in assist percentage
#4 (4th best) in turnover percentage
    #1 in usage percentage
    #1 in points produced
    #4 in offensive rating
    #3 in win shares
    #1 in offensive win shares

And he did all of that with the worst supporting cast in the ACC.

In addition to that, no other candidates really finished strong. I expected Plumlee to win given historical bias towards players on winning teams, but I think Green was more deserving.

    Double kudos to Tau’s analysis.

  19. Dogbreath 03/13/2013 at 5:59 PM #

So why again wasn’t Todd Fuller a POY candidate playing on those dogshit teams?
