Sidney Lowe (not Junior) arrested

Sidney Lowe mugshotSidney Lowe, NC State’s former Head Basketball Coach and starting point guard on the 1983 National Championship team, has been arrested for failure to file state tax returns.

Good God I hope that this is the only former/current NC State coach that has had a run in with the law recently.

Sidney Lowe, former head men’s basketball coach at North Carolina State University, was arrested Monday for failure to file state tax returns for 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Lowe, who coached the Wolfpack from 2006-2011, is currently an assistant coach with the NBA’s Utah Jazz. At the time of his departure from State, he was making $500,000 per year.

He maintains a home in Wake Forest.

He faces three misdemeanor counts of willful failure to file a North Caroline Individual Income Tax Return and was placed under $10,000 bond. A court appearance was scheduled for March 19.

Lowe, a member of the 1983 national championship team at NC State, held an 86-78 overall career coaching record at his alma mater, including a 25-55 mark in the ACC. Lowe never topped the 20 wins mark and never earned more than six wins in the ACC or finished above ninth place in the league.

The ‘good’ news here is that we now know that the state government actually DOES have the ability to both investigate and arrest people that violate the law. This should be huge news to Elaine Marshall and her band of merry misfits at the Secretary of State’s office who seemingly can’t figure out how to proceed to arrest sports agents who have publicly admitted to breaking the law.

Lowe’s first court date is set for March 19th; coincidentally, the opening night of the NCAA Tournament’s “First Four” in Dayton, Ohio.

If you were following our message forums then you would’ve seen this news a little earlier than here on the blog.

Update: In other bad news today it is being reported that NC State starting fullback, Logan Winkles, has also been arrested. Maybe we are getting all of the bad news out at one time?

Not sure why this only involves State and not Fed taxes. Perhaps his former State did not require the payment of state income taxes. Maybe his accountant dropped the ball. In other words there may be more to the story. Before we pass judgement, let’s wait to hear Sid’s side of the story – we owe him that much.

    Good point, NCSU84.

from the looks of his mugsshot, Sid has been beaten up pretty badly.

Regardless, just one more opportunity for UNC-CHeat fans to rub in the “Carolina Way” in our face. Regardless of how broken and disproven that is, they’ll still do it.

Another WTF moment for Wolfpack sports!

  4. Wulfpack 02/18/2013 at 2:12 PM #

    Does not look good.

I do not have any idea how some people may think that an extremely shitty former coach who was fired due to horrifically poor performance getting arrested for anything had any reflection on the University or the university community. This is a Sidney Lowe problem. This is in no way shape or form an NC State problem.

“…more to the story …” Agreed. But it will get worse.

The tax guys don’t usually start with an arrest, there must have been many preliminaries since 2009.

Not Jr, that was the first thing I thought too.

Hey! If corporations are people then so is Sid Lowe by gone it.

Alright, keeping it on the light side…. atleast we never have to worry about Wolfpack SS, Trea Turner, being caught at anything.

Out of all the shit that I have seen today with Sidney and Winkles, the one thing that really pisses me off is the USA/ESPN poll. Not even one point given to us in the rankings. That is bullshit my friends.

There is one thing I do not participate in on these or any boards and that is talking shit about those assholes in chapel hill if they are being investigated or something about their players and coaches because it leaves the door open for them and their two best friends(The N&O and WRAL).

The way I look at it is get a great coach and great players in every sport and go out and dominate the crap out of them year in and year out. Hopefully we are headed in that direction now.

Seriously though, please, please, don’t go through all his money transactions. Ryan Harrow had more shoes then that old hag President of the Philippines.

    what the…

    ..while shooting Bryant Feggins?

Well if it can happen to Wesley Snipes, it can happen to anyone.

It could be a lot worse. What if he was still our coach?

Hope it comes out that it is somehow explainable, but that seems unlikely.

On the bright side, Coach Lowe now has the same sterling credentials as our Treasury Secretay and other member of the Obama WH. Maybe he has his eye on a spot there and needed to “pad” his resume, as well as his bank account.

One wonders what was going on back then. He was selling his “big” house and also setting up his wife in her Charlotte home as part of their “Trial” living apart.

He was also supporting, as reports have it, his son and grandchild.

His Mom and a LOT of relatives moved to Raleigh and are close by…..don’t know how many of them depended on Coach for their entitlements….

Really sad day…..factor in Logan’s purported arrest…..and the PR folks in the WP AD are on RED Alert.

I have talked, one on one, with him several times during his last years after the radio broadcasts. Even at the most dismal periods of our W-L numbers, he was NEVER as dejected looking as the mug shot.

Damn, hate to hear this. He’s Wolfpack family IMHO. NCSU84, I’m wondering if he filed in another state those years…perhaps the state of his last residence before coming to Raleigh. Of course that would be a mistake…but I’m hoping that’s what he did. I can’t imagine filing Fed but not State. Did he have a CPA or use TurboTax? These online services can F you up if you have a complicated return, multiple sources and types of income and multiple residences. I feel bad for the guy. I have a son who is an addict so I can relate to some of the same things guys like Sid go through behind the scenes. Perhaps he simply didn’t give his tax filings enough time, thought and attention and relied on someone “unreliable”. I just hope this works out for him. He needs a break.

Like above said, the arrest was no way his first “warning.” They try to get their money by other means first. Regardless, at least we come out of this looking better than those jokers at UNC. Low class there.

There is more to this story (probably not in a good way either). The Tax mafia doesn’t usually arrest someone like this unless no other efforts worked to collect OR there is something he did that was a big no no….That meaning a breaking the law no no (not just oops I forgot to pay).

I hope it works out for him because he did support a lot of his family.

  17. Wulfpack 02/18/2013 at 6:33 PM #

He didn’t pay his income taxes the last three years he was the coach at NCSU. I am sorry, but that is just dumb. You are going to get caught. Notice that the charge is “willfully” failing to pay.

I had heard that Sid was very lazy while he was coach at State. I had also heard he wasn’t necessarily the most upstanding guy. If this is true, hard to deny that.

Should have had a MAC grad student at Nelson do his returns for free. Hope this turns out to be just an embarrassment. I can imagine the worst case scenario being pretty bad.

It’s funny how money can motivate one to action.

The best case scenario is that he is a colossal idiot.

Cant’ respond to anything because I can’t read anything. Dark grey type on top of a brown hardwood floor has got to be one of the worst examples of typography I have witnessed – ever.
