Pack Baseball TODAY vs Villanova

blockSbaseballAnother weekend, another half-assed preview I’m afraid.  This time it’s not fully my own fault, as the Pack’s opening game of the weekend has been moved up due to expected weather issues, thus I’m putting this up a day sooner than I thought I would.  But if I’m being honest, this weekend’s preview was probably still gonna suck.

I can own it.

Another part of the reason for that is that instead of the traditional three game set, the Pack welcomes three different teams into town this weekend, and frankly I’m too lazy to do a full preview for each of them.  So mostly it’s links again.  I’ll (probably) get more conscientious and industrious here pretty soon, and once basketball season winds down (hopefully not until early April 😀 ) we might even start doing the live blog thing again for some of the weekend games.  We’ll play that one by ear.

But for this weekend at least, here’s what’s on tap….

As mentioned above, the Pack’s opening game of the weekend vs the Wildcats of Villanova, which had been scheduled for Friday, has now been moved up to today at 4pm.  Also in town this weekend are the Wagner Seahawks and the LaSalle Explorers.  The four teams will play a weekend round robin, weather permitting of course.

The (current) schedule for the weekend’s games are as follows:

Thursday
4pm – NCSU vs Villanova

Friday
11am – Wagner vs LaSalle

Saturday
Noon – NCSU vs Wagner
4pm – Villanova vs LaSalle

Sunday
11am – Wagner vs Villanova
3pm – NCSU vs LaSalle

Pack tops 49ers

For those that missed it (insert Harry Doyle smart assery here), the Pack got into the win column this past Tuesday against the Charlotte 49ers to move to 1-1 for the season.  Logan Jernigan (4.0 ip, 3h, 5k, 4bb) and Ethan Ogburn (5.0 ip, 1h, 2k, 1bb) combined for a four hit shutout.  Trea Turner stayed hot to start the season with a 2 for 3 day which included an RBI double and 2 runs scored.  He also added another stolen base, bringing his season total up to 3 for the young two game season.

It was also head coach Elliott Avent’s 600th career win.

Let’s go Pack, time to get a win streak going today vs the Wildcats!!

And isn’t it about time you got yourself over the the SFN Forums to see what all the fuss is about?

Do they honestly think they’ll break even by hosting this trio in the dead of February?

If NCAA officials want to make baseball relevant, first move the season starting date to March 1. You might make an exception for areas like Florida, Texas and California, but it’s simply too doggoned cold in these latitudes for February baseball.

ACC officials should then look at sensible conference schedules, such as having the Big Four schools play each other 6 times in a season. I’ve considered buying season tickets for Wolfpack baseball, but when I look at the schedule and see who we’re playing and who we’re not playing, I’m not interested.

I just don’t get it that while our conferences continue to expand, our frequency of games with our conference rivals, especially the schools nearby, declines. Why is that?

If they are gonna start this early then all northern teams should start in the south and southern teams can come up later in March.

I bet Villanova & LaSalle are glad to be playing in NC… there’s still snow in some of the ‘burbs around Philly & they’re calling for more snow this weekend.

But I agree – 30-to-40 degree weather doesn’t feel much like baseball weather this time of year. C’mon, March!

How many times has the ACC done ANYTHING smart or logical or “for the fans” or not blue-biased under Swoffart’s watch! I rest my case!

Heard Avent on the radio yesterday driving home from work. Several good quotes but I’ll mention a few.

Doesnt matter who they play, they need to play games. He wants every starter to have atleast 2 outings before Clemson rolls into Raleigh on March 6th (2 weeks away!!!!). He is really upset, as are alot of other coaches, that there is no preseason and a very short non-conference schedule before league play starts.

When games are rained out, usually its the head coach calling other local coaches to try to set up a quick game (he mentioned they he contacted A&T to play but they had a makeup game). There is actually a website coaches visit to try to schedule with other colleges when games are rained out. One would think Debbie & co. could help make calls/schedule but thats just me.

Lastly he said despite not having much power, the offense runs through Turner. Usually a big inning is started or extended with his bat.

Rodon will be fine. 5 bad pitches, 3 Hrs.
