NC State among most watchable teams in basketball

Our beloved Wolfpack may very well give all of us coronaries before this season ends, but one can’t say that they aren’t entertaining and fun to watch in the process?

I thought that this entry from Deadspin was a nice acknowledgement to the Pack and Mark Gottfried’s system that should be very attractive to talented high school recruits. (cough, cough, Julius Randle)

3. North Carolina State: Richard Howell isn’t built like a bruiser, but the forward’s core strength allows him to clear out a significant chunk of interior space. He has superior footwork, and he can outjump would-be defensive rebounders, all of which make him a box-out nightmare for opposing bigs (not to mention a vital part of the Wolfpack’s 1987-never-happened offense). Only four other high-major programs attempt fewer threes than the Wolfpack. When he isn’t converting those rebounds—Howell’s 1.28 points per put-back is fourth among D1 bigs—his team benefits from the additional possessions.

Let’s see, it’s only been a little more than 20 years since Les Robinson’s first season when he inherited Jim Valvano’s talent. I’d say that is the last time that any NC State basketball team would’ve even been a candidate for such a list.

    Most Watchable?
Unless you’re a Pack fan. LOL

  2. sjmac11 02/19/2013 at 12:37 PM #

not looking foward to an unwatchable game on Saturday. Ugh

  3. Blackfish 02/19/2013 at 12:47 PM #

I say we put our scrubs on the floor and foul every UNX player who attempts a shot in the first 5 minutes, Hell we never start really playing till around the 10 minute mark anyway.

  4. MrPlywood 02/19/2013 at 12:54 PM #

Saturday? There’s a game to win tonight, right?

  5. BJD95 02/19/2013 at 1:05 PM #

This really is important. Not just as a fan, but also in recruiting. And also in being a dangerous tournament team.

Take for example, UVA. They may have a slightly better record than us. But they have no shot to recruit anywhere near as well. And they are extremely limited in their March potential.

Much more watchable when we win….

  7. sjmac11 02/19/2013 at 2:00 PM #

Rah, Rah….yeah there’s a game tonight…of course. I guess I’m just not as pumped as I should be. Wait, should I be???? Guess I’m still a little sour over the dump we almost took…AT HOME.

“NC State among most watchable teams in basketball” , for the most part, our team always has been (minus the years of the HWSNBN Princeton offense). There is a reason we are referred to as the Cardiac Pack.

  9. JEOH2 02/19/2013 at 2:18 PM #

The Sid Lowe Years were nearly unwatchable too…not just because of style of play because…style of play???

“Only four other high-major programs attempt fewer threes than the Wolfpack. ”

This is why we are a consistently high performing offensive team. We do not rely on the three (the most unreliable shot) to get our points. I would imagine we are not much fun to prep for but we are for sure fun to watch.

Anyone that does not enjoy watching this style of basketball is nuts. I remember back in the HWSNBN days. When people would complain about how painful we were to watch and some putz would chime in that anyone who likes “fundamentally sound” basketball should love that style. It was awful. It is an awful brand of basketball and I am convinced it is because a coach cannot coach offense. Defense is easy to coach. It is simply hard work. Offense is not so easy to coach.

And that is what UVA is facing. They “get more” out of their talent but will never be able to draw in the better talent in order to get to the next level. They have a ceiling like the Herbubble. They have just not figured out the right scheduling to squeak into the tournament.

I like were we are right now. We are way ahead of even the most optimistic schedule for Gott.

BTW when Duke does not have a good PG they play just like UVA. Tough hacking D and an over reliance on the three.

Which highlights the importance of a PG. Remember when HWSNBN used to tell us a PG did not matter? That was because he could never recruit one.

Now we have one of the best PGs in the nation. A McD’s AA backing him up and another McD’s AA PG coming in next year. Guards win championships in college.

Zo is the most watchable player I’ve seen this year (definitely in ACC, maybe nationally). The TOs don’t bother me at all unless its in nail biting last minute.

His handles aren’t this cheating, palming, crossover dribble drabble that AAU basketball has been spewing out for years as “PG’s”. His is a seemingly effortless performance of changing speeds-slow up then speed fast and blow by.

Th is how basketball used to be played and taught- not all this flex motion offense, illegal screens, and palming going on everywhere else.

I hope WBS soaks as much of Lorenzo’s game in so he can keep this new age of Wolfpack brand BBall rolling. I’m for one am sure going miss seeing Zo and am just going to enjoy the moments in the now

^^^Guess I’m still a little sour over the dump we almost took…AT HOME.

Key word…almost. I sure as hell rather “almost” lose, than “almost” win, but some will complain no matter what…

When we are “on” and running, we are as exciting as we’ve been in 20+ years.

“We are way ahead of even the most optimistic schedule for Gott.”

    OMG, this.

This is the right perspective, absolutely dead on the mark. We are so far ahead of even the most optimistic schedule that I imagined, it’s almost unbelievable. I am still giddy with where the program is. Yes, yes, yes a thousand times, there are things that could be better, things that could improve. But compared to the wasteland from which we just emerged, this is almost Nirvana.

Going to the game tonight. Looking forward to it. Go Pack!

  16. mak4dpak 02/19/2013 at 4:00 PM #

Not convinced Saturday is a wash. The same VT team that took us to OT, thanks to officiating imcompetence, also took the holes, to OT in Chapel Hell. And we have yet to play a great game from start to finish, so here is hoping that will be Saturday. We can take them, didn’t say we would, but we can. But first things first, tonight against FSU. Then we will deal with the cheats down I-40.

“crossover dribble drabble that AAU basketball has been spewing out”

haha – I like “dribble drabble” – it’s descriptive and condescending all at once.

Watched Julius Randle play this past Friday night for his high school team. He was a “man amongst boys”. Would love to see him put on the Wolfpack red!

“And that is what UVA is facing. They “get more” out of their talent but will never be able to draw in the better talent in order to get to the next level. They have a ceiling like the Herbubble.”

When they were beating us it made me feel better when I essentially posted this. You might beat us UVA but hope your fans are enjoying their ceiling and perennial bubble status.

I also suspect Bennet will not have a winning record over Gott in the long run….assuming Bennet gets ten years like every slightly above average coach deserves.

I have remarked often to friend (someone new to the great STATE of N.C who i have succeeded in making a Pack fan) while watching NCSU basketball make a great play:

“We couldn’t do that a few years ago. There were MANY years when we couldn’t even DO THAT!”

Even if NCSU hasn’t lived up to the preseason hype, we are still far ahead of where we have been the past 20+ yrs (excepting one or two years of Jules & Co.).

I will NOT forget that. Thank you Gott, Howell, Wood, Calvin, Brown, and all!

  23. runwiththepack 02/21/2013 at 5:09 PM #

Oh! And thank you, thank you, thank you Gott, Howell, Wood, Leslie, Brown, & all. Gonna miss those ball players, who got started here in Raleigh with little fanfare, excepting Leslie.

My friend, mentioned above, shares a season ticket with another transplant, who i also converted to Pack fan, in basketball and football. They join me and a couple other NCSU grads at ball games.
