Marissa Kastanek leads Wolfpack to easy win on Senior Night

The Wolfpack women, lead by lone senior Marissa Kastanek, easily beat a depleted Virginia squad 80-59 tonight in Reynolds Coliseum. NC State ups its record to 14-15 overall while bettering their conference record to 6-11. Virginia fell to 15-13 overall, and 7-10 in the conference.

Kastanek hit two early three pointers to ease any senior night nerves in route to a 14 point night. She was one of four players who scored at least 14 points for the Wolfpack. Markeisha Gatling lead the way with 21 points and 7 rebounds, while Kody Burke had a double double with 16 and 11, respectively.

The Wolfpack jumped out to an early double digit lead and lead by 10, 43-33 at the half. Even though Virginia cut the lead to 4 at 47-43 in the second half, it turned out to be the closest they would come as the Wolfpack went on a 10-0 run to take back control. From there, the Pack cruised.

Kastanek went over 1600 points for her career tonight. The energy and emotion she plays with night in and night out is infectious.

Coach Kellie Harper was very excited about the way the team played. It was the best offensive performance of the conference season.

The team finishes up the regular season at Clemson on Sunday. The Pack, currently 7th in the ACC standings, is starting to peak at the right time before the ACC Tournament starts in Greensboro.

Marissa Kastanek is one of my most favorite basketball players present or past. I remember the first time I saw her play at Reynolds. It was a home game against Maryland in 2010. One series stands out. Marissa ran across the lane to get a rebound and in doing so got hit in the face pretty hard. She continued to the three point line, passed the ball to Nakita Gartrell who then passed it back to Marissa. As Marissa shot the three ball, I thought if she makes this! She did.

Another point in her career at State which stands out to me occurred at the beginning of the second half in a home game for the State women. As Marissa and Bo Holston walked toward the sideline away from State’s bench to inbound the ball, Bo was frowning. Marissa was walking along side of her pushing against Bo’s shoulder, talking and smiling. Bo kept frowning. Marissa kept talking. Eventually Bo started smiling.

I think the last rememberance of Marissa that I described best sums up Marissa Kastanek. Anyone who sees her picture and sees her in person cannot help but notice the big smile she always seem to have.

Besides that she is a very good basketball player and student athlete.

A outstanding person, student, and bb player! Being the last recruit of Kay Yow she has been a tribute to what Coach Yow was all about.

Nice way to end a career in Reynolds. Happy for her and the team.

Glad she had a good game on her last home game.

BTW how is Harper’s status as head coach? It seems like its taking a long time to get the program turned around.

I like her but as always the bottom line is the w-l column.
I wonder how her standing is with the AD?

There was a great article about Marissa Kastanek in the alumni magazine sometime last year. She really does appear to be one of the greats as far as being an overall representative of NC State.

    Thanks for the update ruffles.

Glad Marissa got to go out in Reynolds on a high note. I haven’t watched the women’s team as much as maybe I should have but I’ve always been impressed by Kastanek’s game. She seems to have that feel for the game that not everybody has.
