State loses (ugly) at Virginia

Box Score (ESPN)

Zo Brown — the ACC’s best point guard and leader in assists — missed the final 30 mins with an ankle injury, and State lost another ugly, poorly-officiated weeknight road game, 58-55.

State managed only five points in transition. Despite Brown’s absence, State led 47-42 with 8:15 remaining, but then managed only two field goals and a total of seven points over the final 7:23.

State falls to 5-3 and fourth place in the ACC, with undefeated Miami looming Saturday (4pm, CBS).

So.the 1-14 is not correct. What is the record after beating the blues

I thought the refs were, objectively, awful. I really do not see how our guys getting clobbered underneath and pushed are not fouls. On the other end, anytime we stuck a hand up, it was called.

I have seen 3 away games horribly called by the refs. Complete and total inconsistency. We should have won them all, but haven’t been able to overcome.

Duke would have been to the foul line 3 times as much as we were.

It will be interesting to see what Gott can do the next two years with his own players. It could be tough. We need to sign at least 5 guys to be able to field a team next year. Our bench is awful.

I can accept THIS loss for all the reasons stated above. But MD and Wake, not so much. Those were two games we should have won – no exceptions.

When is Gott gonna get a T?

Coach’s comments were spot on. He is NOT on the ledge and neither is the team.

I wonder if DeThaey is tweeting….

We will bounce back…..I think we will take Miami assuming that the team is not infected with the Calvin germ and that Zo’s ankle will allow him to play on Saturday.

I thought, around, 5 min to go, that we would pull it out. We made some bad plays….and the freshmen are NOT upperclassmen. They will learn and improve.

So, to all that are about to utter the infamous….”Good Bye Cruel ACC”, please sit down, step away from the ledge, have your support resources put away all the sharp objects and have an Adult Beverage…..only one…..and then get some sleep.

Again, I thought we were the better team – even with Brown out.

Take from that what you will. I see no reason for a meltdown. What stings is that this L hurts especially bad after the blown opportunities at Maryland and Wake.

This is like salt in the open wound.

Wolfpack4ever, Lewis doesn’t have the confidence of the coach yet. Lewis has a tendency to become impatient and takes bad shots and is not always careful with the ball. Many times he’s been physically outmanned 15 feet from the basket and he doesn’t exactly have a long wingspan.

He’s a good player but he’s not there yet. I really like Lewis a lot. He is a great reserve (at this point). If you put him in now, he will most likely sink. You need to put the kid in with the opportunity to succeed. The match-ups didn’t favor him tonight.

Coach Gott thought our best chance to win was with Purvis, who did a good job considering. I wasn’t displeased with the point play with Brown suddenly out of commission.

BTW, Hairston left the BC game on a stretcher – looked like a concussion issue. Even though he’s a cheat, you always want athletes/kids to have the opportunity to perform.

Wichita State lost big at home to Indiana State. That’s not a bad thing.

I knew we were in trouble when the annoucers commented on Rodney Monroe being on a UVA’s hip….

I fully understood that Gottfried had personnel isses and was expecting to see Corch and Julius out there…..

OR maybe this was a Rod Serling game……

    Doobe-Doobe-Doobe-Doobie……..

Dr my thoughts on Lewis and Purvis are like yours. Given the situation I thought they did reasonably well but neither is Zo. So much of our offense relies on Zo’s ability to both move the ball and to score when needed.

The frosh are nearing “the wall” when a lot of freshmen just run out of steam. Hopefully Zo comes back in fine form. CJ recovers and no one else gets infected.

If we had a blue Jersey, this team would be undefeated in league play. Think about how important referring is for a moment.

We had chances to win all games but a couple beneficial whistles would sure be nice SOMETIMES!!! Fuck we’re just happy to have a FAIRLY called game much less a game called in our favor!

  12. JohnGalt78 01/29/2013 at 10:14 PM #

IMO, not too bad tonight. TL got a lot of QPT. Officiating sucked equally. Calvin really hooks a lot and does not get called. Lo was looking fine jumping up and down like a fan…can’t be too hurt. All guns blazing and fans rocking PNC Saturday. Predict we win a violent game against the U.

    Just some quick thoughts:

-Zo being out was a killer
-Refs sucked as usual, they let UVA play their brand of football/bball
-Not sure what Gott was doing on the second to last possession, took way too long to get it into CJL then when it got knocked out of bounds they had to force a terrible 3.
-I kind of wish instead of force feeding Wood on the last play why not make an extra pass to RP or TJW and let them take a less contested look?
-I hate to say this but not having Harrow or any decent backup PG destroyed the team late. There was no flow and the only option was to feed it inside over and over again. CJ was dead tired and had trouble handling the ball late and was trying too hard.
-This team is not ready for the primetime. Too young, not deep enough, and not enough leadership. With a favorable draw in the tourney and a hot streak they can do a lot of damage (S16 again?), but the grind of the season really shows the flaws.
-I agree with the media with all their negative tweets and comments – you can’t trust this team. Regardless of the line or the injuries/illnesses this was a game they should have won. Good teams win on the road and good teams win despite of their ups and downs.

I liked that Lewis got some good playing time tonight, and when he has it I’m confident he will handle the defensive pressure. If he can knock down a three that’d be another nice step forward for him.

I’m not happy, but our team is not built for short turnaround with our short bench. Just like I expected, some of those balls that rim in at home, rimmed out. Just like Maryland, while we had our chances, we couldn’t quite bring it home.

I find it really annoying that we don’t have an opportunity to get Maryland and Virgina back at home.

Saturday should be interesting. Home sweet home.

Don’t forget the refs just straight up took away a valid bucket by Warren on some pretend travelling violation.

  16. Prowling Woofie 01/30/2013 at 12:12 AM #

    1) Tendencies…

    2) Gott should’ve gotten a Technical – he needs to stand up to the refs’ bullshit

    3) If Brown isn’t in a cast tomorrow, he doesn’t need to suit up anymore.

How many, “clearly we are the better team” opinions are there? Very clearly, a better team should squash a UVa team, injuries sickness and all.

I’m more of the opinion of others here that believe we have talent, but play dumb and out of control too much to be consistently good.

While there is still lots of season left, we are way past half way. The team should be getting it’s act together. We could easily lose our next 3 games. It’s no time to bail on the team, but you have to call it as it is.

  18. 8pack 01/30/2013 at 2:19 AM #

^At full strength, we are ‘clearly a better team’ than Virginia.

  19. 44fan 01/30/2013 at 5:46 AM #

If anyone believes we are having a successful year just because we beat the blue teams. They are badly mistaken. With the talent on this team we have lost to Maryland, Wake (freaking Wake) and Virginia. Again, with our talent, this is turning into a disappointing season.

You guys are seeing something in Lewis that I don’t. I’m sure he is a fine young man, and we are all grateful for his role in getting Purvis and Warren. However, he is a major liability on defense and has shown no ability to hit outside jumpers at an acceptable clip. He has shown a modest ability to run our sets in the half court, but he is a major mismatch (not in our favor) against every point guard in the league. On a normal roster, he is a third option at the point. If Brown is out for any period of time, we are f**cked.

  21. wolfmanmat 01/30/2013 at 6:24 AM #

The 3 ACC losses are road losses. This is a young team and it just takes time to learn to win on the road…particularly in the ACC where even at UVA the fans are very into the game and where the refs tend to “favor” home teams. This game is much more excusable than Wake with Zo out and CJ sick. Virginia is a solid team and will be close to NCAA bubble. That said, TJ Warren had no business guarding Joe Harris, but who else we gonna put on him? Purvis, maybe, but not Wood and no CJ or Howell. As for Howell getting in Tj’s face, we should all look at that as a positive. Howell is a senior taking a leadership role and TJ is a fresh with a lot to learn still. Having Senior leadership is absolutly critical in March….as is having freshman step up. Hopefully both happen in March and the team peaks in March as they did last year. Bottom line, at this point, sans OK State, we have proven to be a capable team in home and neutral court games…that’s March. it’s a long season.

I can excuse this loss, but there are certain patterns developing that have me a bit concerned. And if we lose to Miami, which is highly possible, we sit at 5-4. I don’t care who you are, that its not an acceptable record at the midpoint for THIS team. Our late game play is perplexing.

  23. GApack04 01/30/2013 at 6:50 AM #

Warren had to guard Harris because of the injury to Zo. If Purvis and Lewis could’ve played together down the stretch then RP could have handled Harris. The only issue with that is then Warren is on the bench at the end.

In regards to the “better team” argument it depends on what exactly you are looking at. Talent-wise yes State is much better, execution and teamwork-wise UVA is much better than State IMO.

  24. Rick 01/30/2013 at 7:38 AM #

“losing Zo had little to do with this loss. 5 unanswered trips down the court with 0 points at the end does.”

How in the world you cannot see a correlation between these two things is beyond me.

I hope Zo is back for Sat.

Funny, through last night, and into this blog piece, I still can’t find Scott Wood.

With the road games looming, yet…Can you say 7 seed?
