State loses to Wake.

Ugly.

After trailing 47-35 at half and then 53-42 with 18:09 to play, Wake trounced State with an aggressive, efficient 40-19 surge over the next 14:19 and led 82-72 at the under four-minute TV timeout. State had multiple opportunities to tie (and even win) in the final minute, but missed three-of-four free throws and then missed two field goals (on one of which Leslie was clearly fouled, no call).

This just hasn’t been a good team since beating Duke (and it certainly hasn’t played with any consistency). Blame the officials if you want, but Wake was clearly the better team tonight and deserved to win. And that’s damn tragic.

Box Score (ESPN).

Is ACC basketball at this much parody? Or are we just not as good as advertised? Not sure I’ll be watching many more this season.

Where to start. Poor defense. Very little hustle. No rebounding position, teams go over us to get an offensive rebound. Offensive scheme seems to break down to one on one approach when we get under pressure.

Explain to me how some coaches demand strong defense and get it from their players every game, while we can’t stop any dribble penetration.

I don’t see how the coaches can’t be held accountable from such an up and down performance from mostly seniors.

I still don’t understand why we can set and us a screen properly and every team we play uses screens much more effectively.

We got beat by a bunch of freshmen tonight. Not a good thought.

I paid good money to see us play UNC on sat. night. They play like this then I won’t waste my money again.
Officiating was beyond bad but we have to play to win.

words fail me. I am considering not watching the game Saturday.

Free throw shooting needs to get better-we’ve sucked from the line all season and tonight it caught up with us

  6. Smasher 01/22/2013 at 9:07 PM #

Defensively we are horrid…have been horrid all year…and likely won’t get better any time soon. Hard to tell if this is on coaches or players.

    FREE THROWS AGAIN!

A developing WFT season just took a giant leap tonight toward becoming a WTGDF season.

Coach has Gott his work cut out with this bunch.

Worst loss of the season, by far–and I watched the Oklahoma State and Michigan games back in November.

With all due respect to WFU, top teams don’t give up 51 second-half points to Wake Forest. Top teams don’t have half a dozen shots (including two 3-pointers) stuffed back in their faces. Top teams don’t let a freshman averaging 12 points a game look like a lottery pick.

    Christ, this is disappointing.

” I am considering not watching the game Saturday.”

You’ll be back. Try though you may, you’ll be back. We all will. We can’t help it.

This loss was inevitable after a one day turnaround having played on Sunday. No time to prepare, no time to rest and it showed in the second half. In March (tournament time), we better be ready to handle short turnarounds or we will be a quick out.

There are 2 absolute facts that can’t be argued…

    1. We are a HORRIBLE defensive team
    2. The ACC Officiating is HORRIBLE.

Wake shot lights out in the 2nd half and “Calvin” played like the CJ of old. He seemed out of the game, separated from team ball and just pushed the issue way too much. The refs sucked but our butterfingers all night didn’t help.

    @NCSU84

Man, I hope so. Thanks for injecting a little sanity into the conversation.

Pleeze don’t blame the refs again…..its getting old like losing.

We just plain suck right now. No D, lazy passes and terrible at the FT line.

Lost to WAKE………..who probably won’t beat another ACC team all year. Pathetic.

Carolina will win by 25 in our house on Saturday. Bank it.

Only got to listen to the last 6 minutes on the radio. Glad I didn’t have to witness this debacle on TV.

  15. MISTA WOLF 01/22/2013 at 9:23 PM #

I will not blame the refs. The staff knows we are not going to get the calls and therefore we have got to find a way to overcome. Wood was not trying to get open at all tonite, C.J. could have easily had 6 to 10 more points tonite if he would just use the backboard, Cement feet on defense killed us and without Zo in the game we have no general at all. Give Wake all the credit. They studied Clemson and Maryland game film and took it to us in the middle. Back to back games where a less than stellar forward/center had career nights. Saturday will be interesting and now is a MUST WIN game for us. Hopefully their heads will be removed from their asses and will be ready to rock and roll Saturday.

  16. Pack1997 01/22/2013 at 9:25 PM #

First off let’s not pretend Wake is a terrible team because they are not. They play hard which is more than I can say for us at times.

Your are right the refs sucked, but they sucked for both sides. I was at the game and trust me most Wake fans were as pissed as we were. The ref furthest away from the play normally made the call. It was pathetic, however it is life in sports and you have to play thru it.

Finally Scott Wood is a huge defensive liability. He is slower than most other players on the court. He cheats a lot leaving players open. Fact is we are a much better defesive team when he isn’t on the floor. Offensively not so much.

  17. JohnGalt78 01/22/2013 at 9:26 PM #

was at the game. Howell looked a little sick. CJ was disinterested until the last 2 mins. foul trouble did not allow us to play defense and wake coach called back door plays accordingly. missed FTs. too damn bad…..barf

  18. Lumpy 01/22/2013 at 9:26 PM #

Lorenzo Brown played horrible down the stretch. He wildly drove in the lane with no idea what he was gonna do with the ball once he got there. Completely careless with the ball on critical possessions. The refs missed an obvious one at the end, but we burned so many opportunities to take the lead that I have a hard time getting charged up about it. We just turned saturday into a must win.

  19. eas 01/22/2013 at 9:28 PM #

Wasn’t the refs fault we lost and that is no excuse for the laziness we witnessed tonight. However, the ACC officiating as a whole (tonight included) is just plain awful. If CJ would have fouled instead of getting pissed at the end we may have had 2 more seconds to get that last shot off.

If only Vandy had a vertical of more than 2″……

  20. Wolfiegirl 01/22/2013 at 9:39 PM #

I hate it when I have that feeling in my gut that we just are not going to get it done. It reared its ugly head tonight. This was a game that had TRAP written all over it. When will we ever be able to feel like we will win the games we should without some ridiculous prefect storm lining up to knock us back on our tail!!

  21. MBS 01/22/2013 at 9:39 PM #

“Success is a lousy teacher. It makes smart people think they can’t lose.” (Bill Gates)

“I love that quote because it puts so many things in perspective. When ’smart people’ think they can’t lose, there’s an upset brewing. That’s when David beats Goliath and the underdog triumphs” (Jim Tressel)

We’ve got to stop approaching these games against less talented opponents as if we can’t lose them. We OBVIOUSLY can. (MBS)

  22. Wulfpack 01/22/2013 at 9:39 PM #

Wake is bad. They are better, but so are we.

Turns out the national media has us pegged. We do not bring it every night. We play well when we want to play well. That won’t cut it. We are better than UNC, but we better not lose. A loss throws this season into a downward spiral. Must win.

  23. Wolfiegirl 01/22/2013 at 9:46 PM #

@eas…2″ vert is generous…more like negative 2″. Someone remind me why he has a schooly???? Very nice fellow Im sure but geeze!! Bless his heart…

  24. notagain 01/22/2013 at 9:46 PM #

We played awful in the second half and especially down the stretch.

The refs absolutely did not lose this game for us…if anything, they helped us stay in it towards the end by stopping the clock. I just cannot understand the difference in officiating from one game to the next. For the past three games, it has been physical, beat te crap out of everyone and not call fouls. Tonight was just the opposite- touch the opponent wrong and the whistle blows, and it blows on both ends. I wish the acc refs would create some consistency so our guys and the rest of the league could figure out how to play from game to game….

We miss Painter terribly. Any team out there with a couple of beefy guys ( no talent or experience necessary) can take us to the cleaners. We struggled against WF,Maryland and Miami and FSU will eat us alive.
