Social media blunder

TJ Warren retweeted Thomas DaThey’s tweet about Gottfried. I have no idea what was his motivation. Was he highlighting how childish TDT is acting or was he agreeing with it. Either way he should not have done it and the NCSU administration needs to get in front of this ASAP. I hope this is not an indication of a problem within the team.

And now it has gone viral. When will kids learn?

    @ Pack Leader … well … I haven’t thought that either … until last night. A trio w/4 fouls. Vandy with 3.

Watcha gonna do? Go to Staats Battle?

  2. nav 01/23/2013 at 12:24 PM #

We only 1 blockout and a few foul shots away from being undefeated in ACC play. We should relax some.

  3. randygupton 01/23/2013 at 12:27 PM #

^ There was a Les Robinson-coached team which lost 10 games by 3 points or less.

    Relax? We’re NC State.

    20+ years of misery.

    Who has time to relax?

The loss at Wake- that’s on Gott. Some of that in-game, some of that team construction (not entirely his fault)- lack of depth and defense are the big issues.

The Twitter crap- that’s on Warren, though the jury’s out on whether he was agreeing or pointing out the stupidity.

I know one thing, if I was Gott, I’ll call him in, let him know that he’s forgiven, but if it happens again, he’s gone. Maybe have Leslie and Howell beat him up in practice.

  5. wolfbuff 01/23/2013 at 12:37 PM #

If there were leaderhip on this team, the coach wouldn’t have to tell Leslie and Howell to beat him up in practice; they’d do it on their own and handle it internally. And the leader(s) would have the entire team in the gym at 5 AM every morning shooting 500 FTs a piece. FTs is about focus and want-to. Coaches don’t have time for FT shooting in practice. That’s something you’ve got to do on your own if you want to get better.

So for the record, the recent play is not the fault of the coaching staff. That’s on the team to listen, execute, and hold each other accountable. Now, one could make an argument that the lack of depth is because some personnel issues weren’t handled well. But that would all be speculation on my part.

The in-game coaching I thought was fine, given the whistle-fest and foul trouble. Even Vandy gave some seriously productive minutes last night. I nearbout spilled my popcorn when he put the ball on the floor and drove to the basket. Now, if only he could grab a rebound and hold onto it….

  6. EdgeCoWolf 01/23/2013 at 12:40 PM #

I’m completely behind this coaching staff. Yes, there are some times where I wonder what they’re thinking, but the staff knows the players better than anyone.

IMO, Vandy and Lewis did well last night…I wish they had gotten more opportunities up to this point, but I think we can all see an immediate dropoff once you go deeper than 6. I dont think de Theay would have been a major contributor, and he knew it.

I really think the staff is fighting to change the mentality of the upperclassmen. Wood, Brown, and Leslie do not have that killer instinct, at least not consistently. I think Howell has it, and I think Purvis and Warren have it. Gott has mentioned numerous times that he doesnt want to fill schollies with warm bodies…he wants someone with talent AND a desire to win at all costs.

I appreciate the upperclassmen sticking with their commitment to State, but we shouldnt have to play a top-ranked team for them to get hype and play a full 40. They need to play like they’ve got something to prove, regardless of the opponent.

I hate that warren retweeted that because it appears he supports that comment. That’s what social media has done for society. It amplifies what in previous decades would have been mere muttering under ones breath. I think it is safe to say that TDT had a negative attitude based on his tweet. It sucks that even after leavin the team, a negative element can still have an affect.

  8. MrPlywood 01/23/2013 at 1:26 PM #

Retweeting does not necessarily indicate an endorsement, but it is usually taken as such. Twitter is a dangerous tool. State fans were happy when it backfired on uNX.

For my part, I didn’t see much out of TDT while he was at State.

And the header of TDT’s Twitter page says: “I can do all things through christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13″. I guess he gathered all that strength and hit “send”…

  9. triadwolf 01/23/2013 at 1:40 PM #

If it were Gottfried in a vacuum or surrounded by a bunch of no-name assistants, you could maybe make a weak argument on coaching. But when you take a look at our staff overall, you’d be hard pressed to say we have a coaching problem.

I personally think it is mostly a leadership (player) problem. As talented as CJ is, I think he is a large part of our problems. He forces the issue and when he shoots an air-ball, turns it over, or gets his shot blocked, he disappears for the next 10 minutes. At times he is dominate offensively, but that is maybe 25% of the time. He doesn’t even play average defense, isn’t a good free throw shooter and doesn’t rebound very well. Gott has got him playing worlds better than his freshman year, but he is still an enigma. Somehow CJ has got to get back to playing like he was at the end of last season; he looked like a national player of the year – this season, not so much. BTW he has a good stroke at the free throw line; his problem when he misses totally appears to be focus (or lack thereof) – actually focus is probably the problem across the board.

  10. fullmoon1 01/23/2013 at 1:47 PM #

Instead if tweeting the team needs to spend that time working on free throws. Leave the tweeting to us lunatics.

  11. budfox88 01/23/2013 at 2:11 PM #

Agree fullmoon1! Forget twitter and spend every waking moment working on FTs and shooting in general. How many shots did Larry Bird take every single waking day of his life when he was playing? How many balls did Tiger hit every single day? That has nothing to do with coaching, but if you do it, you can make things happen with your eyes closed. It has to do with how bad you want to win!!! Remember the ad with Tiger dribbling the golf ball? Practice!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. wilmwolf80 01/23/2013 at 2:12 PM #

I’ll be standing on deck handing out life jackets to anyone that wants to jump ship at this point in the season. The team, the fans, everyone needs to get a grip and re-focus. For the better part of three decades we would kill for a 15-4 start. Let’s keep that in mind. As for players who are no longer on the team: I wish them the best, and then they are gone from my mind. People leave, it happens. If a disgruntled former player wants to air his feelings on twitter, that’s fine by me. We all should just ignore him.

  13. Rick 01/23/2013 at 2:25 PM #

    Great post triad

  14. triadwolf 01/23/2013 at 2:38 PM #

How many blocks/missed shots would Wood had avoided with a pump fake and one dribble to the right? Better yet, how many fouls could he have drawn? He worked on that all summer and the coaches have made it an emphasis; that’s not bad coaching, that’s stubbornness/bad habits.

BTW – I know when Wood had his shot blocked by the WF wedge that it was a good block, but does that still give you the right to send the shooter into the stands? Maybe not a shooting foul, but a foul nonetheless. It’s just the inverse of when a shooter gets the shot off before the charge, as was called against TJ. Ahhh, just when we thought ACC reffing was maybe turning a corner.

  15. MrPlywood 01/23/2013 at 3:39 PM #

re:Woo’s blocked shots – I think one was actually a pass attempt, when was on the left side 3 line and at least two Pack players were alone underneath the basket. Still a turnover though…

  16. WolfBlood 01/23/2013 at 3:40 PM #

We’re going to have games where fouls will be a factor, it is what it is, we’ve got no depth. Gott is doing a great job with essentially just 6 players. Free throws can make or break us the rest of the way.

IMO the best way for the Warren tweet (if it was intended to be critical by him and not just playing DeThaey) thing to play out is for the players to handle it internally. Hopefully we’ve got enough leadership on the team to squash that.

  17. GoldenChain 01/23/2013 at 3:42 PM #

I’ve said this before…if I were a coach the 1st thing I’d do at orientation is have the players delete their social media accounts. I know this will come as a shock to you under 30’s but I’ve nver seen anything good come from tweeter, at least as far as college athletics are concerned.

  18. Wolfpack93 01/23/2013 at 7:34 PM #

Now if he was talking about Sidney, then he might have a point. I think we have a great coaching staff although I admit I’m at a loss for how we can not be better than last year.

  19. cWOhLFrPAiCKs 01/23/2013 at 8:18 PM #

“Regarding the ill-conceived retweet, I hope there’s a logical explanation. Can’t imagine that TJ is unhappy with where his is in his development, so hopeful on that front.

Regarding the original tweet from TDT, he presumably accused Gott of being a “terrible coach”. In no way do I agree with that “assessment”.

There are a few very high level teams this year – we recently beat one of them in a memorable home game. If you expectation was that we would have zero WTF moments this year, then you either bought into the idiotic MSM over-hype at the beginning of the year despite warning after warning on this blog to the contrary, or you’re just not paying attention.

This team has known issues – primarily depth, FT shooting and turnovers. Lack of depth means that in games where the whistles are blowing non-stop we are at a disadvantage. To my eye, Gottfried is juggling his assets well, trying (as all good managers do) to maximize the productivity given his resource constraints.

I LOVE what Gottfried has done for our program. I’m solidly behind this team and this staff. No matter how many MSM trolls want to make it into something it isn’t, I’m just not biting. The team is 15-4, well on track for my expectations for this year.”

    Well said. Couldn’t agree more.

  20. Astral Rain 01/23/2013 at 8:23 PM #

He just tweeted it wasn’t a jab at Gott a few hours ago.

I’m writing this up as a stupid attempt to motivate that backfired, and I’m going to trust this was a mistake.

  21. WeAreCured 01/23/2013 at 8:25 PM #

Man… I hope TJ doesn’t bail for the NBA after this year. All of this negativity is killing me. What if two more years go by and thanks to all of this negativity surrounding our fans and team, we are right back where we were at the bottom of the league with no end in sight? Honestly, as fans, many among us are not very supportive, and it is no surprise to me that all of the negativity has led to this. If we end up right back where we were, it may very well be because we deserve it.

I’m really pulling for this team, and I still think that this could be a very special year. A 4 or 5 seed is not out of the picture. Everyone needs to relax. At least we aren’t getting whipped by Miami by 30 right now.

  22. STLPack01 01/24/2013 at 9:56 AM #

As someone already said, TJ did not retweet because he believed it to be true. He tweeted this earlier today. Can we get an update to the main entry up top?

We will be fine, we just need to play defense, I care about the rankings but only to know we have a chance to win the big games. And why should Warren tweet about gott if he had made one shot in the Md game we would have WON! 0-6. OUR MCDONALDS freshmen went 1-13. Wake played harder than us
