What does the loss against Ok St tell us?

If you are like me you were pretty mystified by the results of the game against Oklahoma State yesterday. I never expected to go undefeated so losing does not concern me. I am, however, a little concerned about the lack of effort and leadership displayed in the game or another way to put it is I am concerned about the lack of effort by our leadership. So the question becomes, was it a bad game or will it be a consistent problem?

As the often wrong but never in doubt announcer, Dan Dakich, told us over and over and over again, Brown did not play well. Brown has not shot well this year but yesterday he did not do much of anything well, he had too many turnovers (more TOs than points), was torched on defense by Smart and did not lead the team very well. I believe/hope this is an aberration and Brown will turn things around. He was very impressive last year and I see no reason to think he has regressed. Hopefully this is a wake up call and he gets back to last year’s high level of play and reminds everyone why he was placed on the Wooden player of the year watch list.

There are a few key things I think we can take away from this game. We have to rebound better. As a team, OK ST hit the boards hard and we did not box out or match their intensity. Rebounding is about two things, technique and effort. We need to improve on both or we will struggle against big physical teams (see FSU and UMd). Also, if Brown does not play better we will struggle against good scoring guards. Smart was able to score at will last night. Our guards have the size and athletic ability to stop players like Smart so the inability to do so was puzzling.

There were some good things to come from the weekend games. Purvis is a much better shooter than most thought he was. After seeing him play in high school I argued that his shot was very good despite what the “experts” said and it appears the “experts” were wrong. Purvis is an excellent all around player with strong leadership qualities who I really enjoy watching. And what can you say about TJ “Buckets” Warren. The guy simply knows how to score. His shot is not the prettiest thing I have ever seen but it goes in with shocking regularity. He has an uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time to score. He brings instant offense off of the bench and that is a sorely needed skill set. Both of those two are better than advertised. If we can get the upper class man to play as well as those two we will have a very good team.

Overall, this game gives the team some things to work on and to think about. As a fan I wish we had won but realize some missteps are inevitable and I believe Gottfried will refocus the team so they come back better than ever.

Zo is coming off knee surgery and looks to be coasting a bit until he starts getting used to pushing his body harder. It’s a long, long race when you’re talking November (unless your Tony Bennett and 0-2 vs CAA).

I want Howell to become this years Pringles and hit, take a lot 12-15 foot jumpers. Unless its on the defensive end I hope he never touches the ball from five feet in. He has no inside presence and he shoots awfully at the stripe.

TJ Warren is my favorite player on this team and this guys Gott has coming in are going to love him as a teamate. He could be the second coming of Paul Pierce.

Last night was not a feel good, but we must not take this as a negative. Last night we found out how not to take anyone for granted. I believe OK State is a good team that was hungry. Losing a game like this early on will help us against Michigan, UCONN, and the next big matchups. I would rather go ahead and have problems emerge now, so they can be experienced and corrected. We have a lot of talent, we just gotta get the right attitude and focus. I have faith Gottfried knows how to coach this team to its full potential

I will chime in to add that I know-as a matter of fact-that some coaches will definitely let a team lose early like this. This happens quite a bit when a coach senses that his team may be deficient in either leadership or focus. K has done this a number of times I can remember and with noticeable results. IIRC, he has done it with some of his better teams although I cannot remember specific years

I hope we learned that you cannot go through the motions and expect to win. I also hope that the team takes a lesson from Lebron and will not read articles or watch stories about themselves during the season.
Last night also reminded me how good the 73 and 74 teams were. They had a target on their back every game and played in the toughest conference in America and they refused to lose. I remember them being down by 18 at Purdue and everyone was off and they kept grinding, defending and rebounding and willed their way to a win.

Listened to Gottfried’s show tonight. I understand that he is a broadcaster and also a dream weaver….

BUT, he remained calm and answered the questions (which were pretty good….Tony is knowledgeable and always threw Sid softballs). He also added comments and was open and honest.

I have always had a feeling that he was a good coach at AL and had a chance to reflect on his career. I think that has improved his ability. He has a great staff. They will come up with the corrections.

What will be difficult is that the corrections are not in the fundamentals or the plays (he DID say that FT shooting would be a greater priority). It is a correction, adjustment, whatever you want to call it in the mental or emotional attitudes of several of our players.

When you bring in a new super star class, there are always adjustment issues (As Sid would say….TELL ME ABOUT IT…). I think that Coach G. is the guy to make the changes.

NOW, will we not have some sloppy games? Of course….but we will gradually adjustments. We will move forward and from time to time, backslide.

SO, the season is NOT over. No one every expected a perfect season….just a winning one and to peak when it counts.

The very beginning of the game I saw how we were being pushed around and did not push back. That is when I began to worry. I think something happen to this team either right before we took the floor or Saturday.

It is really sad when you have freshmen acting more as leaders than the upper classmen. What really pissed me off was when we made a little bit of a comeback and timeout was called CJ and LO did not show any emotion to encourage the teamates on the court.

MG better nip this in the butt real quick. Only time will tell if this was the best thing to happen to us losing this game.

Lo Brown as a person seems to not be a talkative individual by what I have seen over the years he has been here. That is fine off the court but on the court you better be if your the point guard. You are either a leader or you are not. That does not take anything away from his talent and the fact he has won many games on his own for us last year. That was last year and that was before the single digit ranking and the bulls eye that is attached to our name now when teams play us.

Practicing FT shooting is a commitment and during the game it is concentration. I see a team that so far has showed me all they have to do is show up with all that talent. The irony of this is TJ is showing the team as a freshmen there is always something to work on.

I will tell you right now that if I had a choice of picking TJ or CJ right now in their careers and I am an NBA scout it would be TJ hands down. Some of you might not agree but I can give you 4 or 5 reasons for my decision.

last night while coming home from dinner, my wife and I got to kidding about what it means to be a long time state fan.

Pardon the political satire here, but we believe that the state fans are of the same cloth as Hillary Clinton.

We love our institution as much as she loves Bill. We have been excited by on several occasions, but have also been MORE than disappointed by it on many more.

True love takes many twists and turns so maybe the future will be brighter….but that pesky little intern seems to be “flirting” during the OSU game and done got her hero off the straight and narrow.

But, he will sweet talk us and tell us that all is well and nothing happened and we will believe him until the next time….

Lets hope the vow of monogamy that WJC took brings Hillary some happiness and that we, who seem to be following her path, will also be happy on April 8, 2013….

    Thus endeth the parody….

    GO PACK!
