If NC State defeats Boston College on Saturday, Tom O'Brien

Boston College Head Coach, Frank Spaziani will almost certainly be fired after his BC Eagles play the NC State Wolfpack this afternoon in Carter-Finley Stadium. BC’s win total has steadily declined since Spaziani replaced Jeff Jagodzinski in 2009 – sinking to 2-9 for this season before our game today. Link

But the season’s many malfunctions seem minor when compared with the team’s overall decline the past four seasons.

The last time the Eagles beat a ranked team was Nov. 15, 2008, when a Jeff Jagodzinski-led team beat No. 20 Florida State in Tallahassee.

The Eagles have faced 11 ranked teams since Spaziani took over in 2009, and lost to each of them.

After falling to Notre Dame for the fourth straight season, the Eagles are a loss away from a bit of infamy.

The Eagles haven’t lost nine games since 1989. They haven’t lost 10 since 1978.

In Spaziani’s four seasons, the Eagles have won 21 games. There have been similarly difficult stretches in relatively recent history at the Heights, and they’ve all precipitated a coaching change.

Jack Bicknell won nine games over his final three seasons from 1988 to 1990 before being replaced by Tom Coughlin, who turned the Eagles into an eight-win team his second season on the job.

Dan Henning went 7-4-1 in 1994, his first season as Coughlin’s replacement. But Henning had nine wins in his next two seasons and was replaced by Tom O’Brien, who also turned the Eagles into an eight-win team two years later.

Ah, yes. Tom O’Brien.

NC State’s Tom O’Brien will forever be linked to Boston College and his former defensive co-ordinator (Spaziani). Unfortunately for O’Brien, his 1-4 record against is former employer during the aforementioned futile years may ultimately be one of his own undoings. Even with a win today, O’Brien will have compiled a losing record against the three weakest programs in the Atlantic Division – Boston College, Maryland and Wake Forest – over a six year window of opportunity.

Since we are tying O’Brien to Boston College today in what could poetically be both coaches last game, I thought this entry from BC blogger EagleinAtlanta would fitting to share.

Re-thinking Tom O’Brien and BC

This is probably Tom O’Brien’s last regular season game. The Wolfpack are bowl eligible but most expect NC State to fire TOB or come to some sort of retirement agreement. It’s somewhat poetic that his last game would be against BC. Six years ago I don’t think BC or TOB would have predicted this as the end.

When he left I think BC fans, players and administrators were tired of TOB and he was tired of us. Freed from BC’s limitations, TOB thought he would make NC State elite. We thought we would get a fun coach and a big winner. While both sides had their moments, neither is in a better place than they were six years ago. Time tends to change perspective on things.

I don’t regret letting TOB go, but I think I appreciate him more now. Perhaps I understand him a little better. His constant hunting for a new job and then biting comments on BC now have to be viewed with what he know about working for Gene. Gene’s criticism, the second-guessing and the independent relationships with players and staff probably drove TOB nuts. TOB spent his whole life in the military and football. He’s married to hierarchy and the chain of command. Coach Flip didn’t (when it came to football).

I don’t think TOB is the type to walk around with regrets, but I bet in a few years he will look back more fondly at his time at BC than his time in Raleigh. NC State was never a great fit for his stoic, introverted personality nor the type of player he wanted to recruit. I am sure he’s brought in some great kids but the quantity of great BC guys during his time wins out. I think his pitch worked better from a BC than an NC State. Just looked at his inability to recruit his alma mater St. Xavier of Cincinnati once he left the Heights. When he looks back, hopefully he will remember that BC gave him his first shot at being a head coach (even after Navy passed), he is the parent of three BC grads, and he is BC’s all time winningest coach.

I don’t want to rename the Stadium after him or rewrite history. TOB was a good but never great at BC and it was time for us to make a move. But once he is removed from NC State, I think it is important that BC rebuild its relationship with him. He deserves recognition for his accomplishments and could serve as a resource to future BC football coaches and ADs.

What coaches can we afford to get?

  2. packalum44 11/24/2012 at 10:32 PM #

He runs a clean program that’s all that matters to me. In some perverse manner it mitigates the guilt I feel after banging hookers on business trips and masturbating to tranny porn.

Keep chopping wood TOB until your hands blister and you can’t chop anymore!

Packalim44, Is there anything else you care to tell us?

Packalum, what you said sounds like something similar Joe Biden said about Obama…That hasn’t worked out very good either…

^ Um… With deference to COWDOG, I’ll pass.

Now, about our coach… Not just a question of how we feel about the current one, but more importantly, how we gonna like the next one.

Whatever the when, who, why, and how, the #1 priority of any change is to make sure the end result is an upgrade.

  6. tjfoose1 11/24/2012 at 11:32 PM #

    Haha… just a thought – Spaz’s replacement at BC?… TOB!

Yes. New coach, new league. Both upgrades. Let’s do it.

Packfamily, if Maryland weren’t in such a financial strain in the athletic department, which has eliminated some of its sports program it would never have taken place. It wasn’t a matter of moving up, but bailing out the athletic department, and was strickly for the money. The only SEC rumors for us have come from fans, and not the university. I just don’t see it happening, and don’t want it to either. Travel expenses would increase for the university, and the fans. And football has been a bad enough experience without making things worse in the SEC. If we choose to invite any members.. I see UConn or Louisville, as good prospects. And with the addition of Notre Dame, we need both to keep the divisions even.

As for coaching prospects, I still say 48 yr. old, Bob Stitt, might be the man for us. He is known as an offensive mastermind in college football, and given plays, and advice to big time Division I schools, which in one case caused Clemson to be pummeled. Check him out!

The reality of NC State fball is different from bball. Bball should be in the hunt for ACC championships and Final Fours every year. Fball expectations are twofold; Go to a bowl, and beat Carolina. TOB is on a bowl streak and has beaten Carolina 5/6 times. If we beat UNC we are 8-4 with a season deemed an real success.

I say TOB should stay but with a plan of succession. I trust DY to handle this situation.

Had not had an adult beverage within in 48 hours when I said that I do NOT think TOB will be back last night. Funny how the sunrise adjusts your outlook. After the lackluster performances of our top three teams (FSU, CU and GT – hey don’t knock GT…THEY are going to Charlotte next weekend), I do NOT really know anymore.

As I typed this, I got curious as to whether any tidbits were out there…..and saw Tudor’s column. He is about as ambivlent as I am NOW.

There was a lot of empty seats yesterday…..reminded of the pictures that the N&O ran of MD when they announced their leaving.

If we do NOT travel with a large entourage and/or if we do not do well on the bowl field, then the dye is probably cast. There will be a few candidates that could make us a top 20 team. Some of them are up and coming and some of them have been pushed out of the “top 5” seats.

If the right coach (and I do not believe $$’s in an issue, but we will up the ante to around $2 – maybe TOPS $2.5 Mill, then maybe, just maybe.

All this will make for the destruction of jigabytes of bandwidth over the next several weeks…..

If you listened to Mark and Tony last night, we woulda, coulda, shoulda been better on D if Terrell had not left early and if Amerson had lived up to his press. Injuries also took their toll. I have seen this little production before and the ending never changes.

If we want to be better, then we need better depth and if TOB has not recruited it, then that too is a mark in the CON sheet. Lack of a good (proven) QB, an O line and some sticky fingered receivers will make the points production a bit tough next year.

Don’t know…..don’t know…..but FSU and CU did put a few faint marks in the PRO column yesterday.

Like the 2 other coaches before him, if TOB’s coaching career is over at NC State, he’ll have been very close to do something special, but couldn’t quite turn the corner.

If MOC had beaten very beatable UNC teams his last 2 years, he would have been able to coach at least another year. If Amato, well, Amato’s “close call” came in his 3rd and 4th seasons, where his teams made a few too many mistakes to win titles. The talent was there.

For TOB – his failure right now is simple – he hasn’t won the games that can gin up the fan level excitement for the program to the next level. In most cases, these losses have been close:
    1) At Clemson in 2010
    2) At UMd in 2010
    3) At BC in 2011
    4) At Miami in 2012
    5) At UNC in 2012

Still, you throw those games out the window, and you beat a crappy UVa team this year – and you go 5-3 in the ACC. This record would have represented the best 3 year conference run in 18 seasons for NC State football.

But he didn’t…and the fanbase has kind of said, “whatever” this last game. My family and I – after hanging out with friends the first half, went in the game and stayed till the end of the second half. When we walked out of the stadium, I can honestly say I’ve never seen so few cars in the high dollar spots a few minutes after the game ended.

This will probably be how Yow makes her decision. TOB may not like it, but style points do count – at least in Raleigh. He can truthfully say, that in his 6th year he has a better ACC record than Amato did in his 6th or his 7th (or if you like at ACC record, his 5th) and he has a better ACC record than MOC had in his final season. But if big money donors aren’t happy, and you aren’t setting the world on fire – the die is likely cast.

You may see TOB in Raleigh for another year, but I’d be kind of surprised at this point.

There is no way we can fire the winningest coach in BC history.

  14. Tuffy2 11/25/2012 at 8:49 AM #

Adventuroo, Mark, Tony, and Gary will always SOS it to death. Miss the old days with the real voices of the wolfpack.

I guess I will never get what goes on in the minds of some wolfpack fans. Satisfied with the what and where we are.

Always trying to get better is how I live. Even if it takes the rest of my life. Wait a minute! Is that not what life is about?

  15. mak4dpak 11/25/2012 at 8:58 AM #

So we have a winning record at 7-5 this year, and looking at the schedule, most of our wins were against subdivision teams, or teams with losing records, except for FSU. I for one do not accept this is what we are, and we have beat UNX, five out of six. Championships teams in football are not an impossibility at NC State. If DY can find us another needle in the haystack, we can be champs. How many times has FSU won the ACC, and yet we have shown we can compete with them and even defeat them. Only problem is the team has not been taught to show up for every game, like it was FSU. That is on the coaches. Boring, and unenthusiastic, much like many of the games. A reflection of our staff.

Tuffy2 – I am always trying to get better at what I do. Yesterday morning after running 4.5 miles, I did a set of suicides, all because at age 42, I’d lost 3 seconds Thursday from a race I ran last year. It’s not unusual for me to work 60 plus hours in a week.

When it comes to Wolfpack sports – I want to be able to enjoy them. And TOB brings a mixed bag. He’s better than MOC and Amato. Unfortunately, he doesn’t win pretty and he doesn’t win enough in a row to get folks excited.

I have a lot of friends that go to the games whose life doesn’t revolve around the success of the team. They just want to go to games, enjoy a decent product that doesn’t embarass them with off-the-field shennigans, and spend some time with family and friends. For these folks, TOB is a good fit, provided that the atmosphere at the game isn’t so bland or toxic that you can’t enjoy the game.

Don’t assume that just because someone doesn’t want to fire TOB they don’t seek improvement in their lives.

BTW – my comment was to be humorous. BC in Atlanta’s blog is right, as it typically is.

Agree with ya Chop, same as you on constant improvement.

We’ll see. It is fun and exciting to talk about a coaching change, but you better be darn sure it is an upgrade.
