What college football’s playoff would look like right now

I’m not back at the point of being able to talk about NC State sports quite yet. Of course, that could change in a heartbeat if any highly anticipated news regarding either Dominic Woodson and/or Beejay Anya were to break. So, if you want more Wolfpack than you can handle right now then you need to use this link to jump over to our message forums; it appears that Mondays may be our most active day on the forums.

In the meantime, I thought I would try to slowly get back into the swing of interaction with the community by sharing this link from Big Lead Sports. The author used the current SRS standings to try to predicet how a four-team, a six-team, an eight-team and a 16-team playoff might play out “if the season ended today.”

I am just going to highlight the four-team and the eight-team scenarios below.

Question for you — if Alabama, Oregon Kansas State and Notre Dame all go undefeated then which team has earned the right to play Alabama for the National Championship this year?

Before you dive deeper into the question and the entry, you should hear from some of the coaches that are impacted. 🙂

Four Team Playoff: The four-team playoff will be implemented for 2014 (and probably be supplanted by 2020). Here is how the semifinal bowls would look.

(1) Alabama vs. (4) Notre Dame

(2) Oregon vs. (3) Kansas State

Eight-Team Playoff: This was our favored format. The six highest-rated conference champions and two at large teams. Teams are seeded into four play-in games at home sites. Semifinals are the bowls. This is fair without being too inclusive with obvious result games. It creates close to a true national title, where every team starts the season eligible to win it.

The top six conference champions: Alabama, Oregon, Kansas State, Florida State, Boise State and Nebraska

The two at large teams: Notre Dame, Florida

Alabama – SEC (1) vs. Nebraska – B10 (8)

Oregon – P12 (2) vs. Boise State – MWC (7)

Kansas State – B12 (3) vs. Florida State – ACC (6)

Notre Dame – AL (4) vs. Florida – AL (5)

And what if VT beats FSU, and we win out? We are possible conference champs. We did beat FSU. Keep the faith. It could happen! Possibly even better if the holes win their division. Cause they can’t play in ACC championship. Too bad!
