Scott Wood keeps making 3’s

Thought we’d take a small break this afternoon for some fun and a little focus on basketball. A lot more to come on basketball this week as we gear up for Primetime with the Pack and the start of basketball practice this Friday!

Remember, NC State was undefeated last year (I *think* the specific record was 10-0) when Scott Wood hit four or more three pointers.

The recruitment and eligibility of Rodney Purvis is particularly valuable to Scott Wood. Purvis’ athleticism and ability to create with the ball adds dimensions to the Wolfpack’s offense that CJ Williams did not offer in the 2011-2012 season. This additional threat and added offensive dimension will serve to spread defenses to the maximum design of Coach Gottfried’s offense. The idea of adding more slashing, cutting and driving to the basket from the wings should be even more salivating for Wood to find open opportunities to spot up from three for wide open shots on kick-outs.

This was the missing element on last year’s team (well that and a dominating defensive threat down low to guard against elite forwards).

Few of us have doubts that Rodney will be a terrific offensive scoring guard, which will allow Wood more wide open shots. Expect him to have a slightly higher percentage from 3-land.

However, regarding the other issue last year, defensive presence in the post….this weakness might actually be negated this year with the Australian. His primary contribution will come in the form of defense and rebounding. That’s it. He does those well, we have an added element to our team we did not possess last year.

I’d figure him to average 5 or 6 points in glass cleaning putbacks and passes from one of our slashing athletes – CJ, Brown or Purvis. But the real key will be to see if he can defend the likes of James McAddoo and the douchey Plumlee brothers. If I remember correctly, the dude was pretty effective defender when he played 2 years ago, and that was under the tutelage of the worst coach in the ACC.
