Pack beats Terps 20-18!

It wasn’t pretty, and if you saw it you probably used a lot of profanity in the second half, but State finally caught a break in College Park and after a wild final 5 minutes, goes home with TOB’s first-ever division road win and still in control of the Atlantic Divison.

Box Score

Go Miami vs. FSU tonight.

More to come soon…

In the last two games I have fired TOB and/or alll the assistants several times.

I have made my peace. We are what we are. We might beat UNC and Clemson and loose to BC.

    Go Pack!

“I can’t wait to see what the UNC coach does after he sees the film or the ACC or the NCAA.”

The ACC will make it the “hit of the week” and the NCAA will act like it never happened.

There is nothing I like better than a win at the “Yard”.
Md is the cesspool of the US.

But we were a poorly prepared and undisciplined team.
That seems to be the true hallmark of the TOB era.

What about the crummy block in the back call that would have made it 17-3. Their QB clearly turned right into the block. Awful call that cost us 7.
Refs knew it too and opened up the 2nd half with an obvious’make up call’ when they called holding on the terps on the kickoff

“Were it not for luck, we should have lost to Maryland. ”
Luck goes both ways – we definitely had it on our side yesterday. Sometimes it goes against you – the week after he was catching passes like Steve Largent, Miami’s WR who killed dropped 2 sure TDs. Luck comes into play in these close games – and momentum swings.

2 years ago RW just chucked a ball into the end-zone on 4th down – and Spencer Owens made a miraculous catch to change momentum of the game. In the same game with UNC on the ropes late in the 4th quarter after we had run it down their throats totally down their throats, one of our lineman jumps for an illegal procedure – changing a game-clinching TD to a FG that left it a one possession game. UNC would score a TD and try a 2 point conversion to tie – but on the same kind of play we got lucky on – UNC didn’t make a play we win.

That’s what happens in close games – one team makes one or two more plays than the team that loses.

“We get up for big games, and play down to teams like Maryland. Game preparation. That is on the coaching, and some of the play calling on both sides of the ball was quite questionable. And from the fans around me, I wasn’t the only one feelin that way. But I will again follow closely next week, and be at the game.”

I’m not saying it’s not questionable. Coaches are have one of those jobs that EVERYONE else is sure they can do better. They get judged – not just after every game – but apparently every play. But it’s funny – because it’s such a high paying profession at a certain level – and everyone is sure they can do it better, but for whatever reason, most of us choose to avoid this high-paying profession we can obviously do better.

I wonder how most of us would stand up to this scrutiny. Think about it – don’t just judge the results – judge every decision you make at work. (This is what personal injury attorneys do to doctors, corporations in lawsuits.)

And think about this – if we go 5-3 in the ACC this year…It will be the first time since 1994 that we’ve been above .500 in the ACC two out of three consecutive years.

Absolutely thrilled that we are 5-2 at this point. Go pack! Beat the smurfs.

  7. Wulfpack 10/21/2012 at 8:17 AM #

No doubt Lady Luck was on our side. But I will take ANY win against Maryland. We control our own fate. Must win from here on out as the Noles and Clemson look really damn good. Duke looking solid in the Coastal. They are for real.

  8. sjmac11 10/21/2012 at 8:18 AM #

just thank god for the win, absolutely NOTHING to celebrate. DB’s got beat like a pop warner team……again.
    F**k UNC GO DUKE!!!!!

“But we were a poorly prepared and undisciplined team.
That seems to be the true hallmark of the TOB era.”

Yea – that’s the trule hallmark of the TOB era.

But how do you measure discipline? I think a good place to start is Turnovers and penalties.

Yesterday, we didn’t turn the ball over, but we had too many penalties. So, it was a mixed bag.

And this year, for whatever reason, we’re awful with penalties (92nd in the country).

Historically though, TOBs teams have been quite good:
2011 – 6th in country in TO margin
2010 – 27th in country in TO margin
    2009 – 114th in TO margin
    2008 – 22nd in TO margin
2007 – 116th in TO margin (This was his first year).

    Now, let’s look at penalties:
    2011 – 4th in fewest penalties
    2010 – 4th in fewest penalties
    2009 – 21st
    2008 – 27th
    2007 – 56th

So, if you look at penalties and TO margin – which is the 2 most obvious places, I’d like – I’d agree that his teams historically turn it over all the time and have too many penalties – the hallmark of an undisciplined team.

    TOB so far in Raleigh:

Off the field – good students for the most part, good kids, really represent the school well.

On the field – very poor game preparation and motivation, play calling nothing short of just weird, super conservative (no going for the throat when we need it), stubborn when it comes to in game adjustments. No ability to play on strengths (they still refuse to stick with the highly successful no huddle).

I am happy with a Win as much as anyone but my gosh we still prep every game the same. For me personally I HOPE that TOB chooses to retire gracefully on his own at the end of the season. I appreciate what he has done but if he comes back with the same crew next year (Bible and Archer) we are in for a long season.

Our BB program is full of life and FB is asleep. There is just no buzz or excitement anymore. Not trying to be negative but it is just how I feel. We have played 1/2 of a football game every time we take the field for many years. Usually a snails pace first 1/2 followed by a miracle comeback. Same goes with every season as a whole.

  13. doug 10/21/2012 at 11:42 AM #

We are halfway through the season with a shot at the ACC title. I only remember the years of just wanting to get to six wins to go to a bowl. I am excited for all of WOLFPACK nation.

“I think a good place to start is Turnovers and penalties. ”

So 56th in TO margin, 92nd in penalties sound about right for a senior laden team? And that TO margin includes 1.5 FCS schools contributing greatly.

I love that we Terrapinned the damn Terrapins, don’t get me wrong. The looks on their faces as they tucked their damn keys in their pockets was beautiful.

While I have no delusions of grandeur that I could do better, Chop. I’m fairly positive someone IN that chosen profession, could. You don’t compare the hotness of supermodels to the general population, you compare them to each other.

I’m pretty sure we got us a plus size model. Maybe one of the hottest plus size models, but still…..are you sure that’s the best we can do?

I would love to say TOB and his staff have figured it out, but then they do dumb shit, like throwing on third down and letting UMd keep their last timeout. This after two runs to settle for the FG. There was also the three god awful plays in the first half from inside the 5 yard line to settle for a FG. So for those counting unhatched chickens like the Pick 6 (the QB block wasn’t the called clip BTW, there was a textbook block in the back to the right of the screen from the EZ angle) It actually should have been 21-3. They have the kids playing hard, they just play dumb too. That can be changed, and right now please!!!

I have faith they will bring their best to Crappel Hole, they have a proven commitment to that game. Pretty sure the boys will be focused too.

So, uh, I’m happy with the win. Kinda like when you trip and don’t fall and notice a crispy five dollar bill on the ground. Almost turned that ankle, but I get a value meal woo-hoo!

By all rights we should have lost. We did not. Even Nostradamus put an L in with Wolfpack column as UMD lined up for what should have been a chip shot FG. I take little solace in the W and see that kind of crappy play sinking us before we even have a shot at the title game. I would put zero dollars on us making it to the title game, much less winning it. UNC is not playing much better than us which should make for a good game next saturday. TOB should retire in a few years, but I don’t think it will matter greatly because of the sucky football league we are in. FSU probably wishes they had gone elsewhere. Each and every football team that has joined the league has regressed to the mean.

  16. Wolfacct 10/21/2012 at 3:34 PM #

Right now we control our destiny in this “sucky” football league. Rather than wishing they had gone elsewhere, FSU should try to win this “sucky” conference.

  17. 61Packer 10/21/2012 at 4:28 PM #

UVA, Wake and BC should be slam dunk home wins. Although UNC is a team in turmoil right now, it’s a road game for us. That should be 9 wins. I say “should be”, but this is NC State football, which usually plays its first and second halves of games (and the season) in parallel universes. Lord knows what’s in store from here out.

Only one of the ACC’s two best (by far) teams, FSU and Clemson, will get to Charlotte, thanks to the idiot division play (expansion) John Boy has brought us. Only 5 Coastal teams can go to the Queen City, so it’ll come down to either the worst VT team in memory, a schizophrenic GT team, a lost Miami team, a terrible UVA team, or Duke. Here’s Duke, in first place, but we won’t get to play ’em again this season.

Thank you, John Swofford, for keeping us out of harm’s way by not allowing us to play Duke but once every 4 years, and additionally bringing the Pitt and Syracuse football powerhouses into the league.

And to top it off, thank you for allowing Notre Dame to grab a chunk of our conference’s basketball revenue that was built primarily by the early ACC members (Big Four, Maryland, Clemson, UVA), while keeping their football revenue all for themselves. The end of the rainbow is in South Bend, where the big leprechauns are dancing.

  18. Packster 10/21/2012 at 7:39 PM #

Great win. We still suck at knowing how to run the clock down on a drive when we know the other team will get the ball to end the game. We have to get better at that. But overall, I couldn’t believe we finally caught a little luck and had one of these go our way!

  19. RedReid 10/21/2012 at 8:28 PM #

Hell. Somebody Give Sade some credit. All good teams have a crucial Place Kicker. Remember when Alabama lost there regular season game last year to LSU cause their Kicker was terrible. They rarely get the kind of credit other position players get. You make it we love you, you miss we hate you. Kickers can make and break your season. Sade stepped up and made the kind of kick(for the second time this season:Miami) that will have hime kicking on Sundays. Their kicker didnt.

Im I disapointed our defence didnt hold them with a freshman QB for 30 seconds. Yes!!

  20. JEOH2 10/21/2012 at 9:01 PM #

Crazy part is had Hills stayed in the game, I think we beat them by at least 2 scores…especially sans the “block in the back” call…

I also believe the frustration for Wolfpack fans with this win is significantly minimized if our D sacks their 5th strong QB or gets a pick on that last drive…it was a frightening game to watch as it felt like a Miami redux

  21. 74 glory 10/21/2012 at 9:44 PM #

This game just about summarizes our season up to this point. It’s either feast or famine, especially on offense.
Hopefully, we’ll be ready for the TurdHeels after the Dukies broke their blue hearts.
Time for Mad-Hatter Fedora to feel what it’s like to lose to the Pack for 6 straight years!

“UVA, Wake and BC should be slam dunk home wins.”

    You are kidding right…

We will go 3-2 or 2-3 in the last five. 7-8 win season. Chopping wood.

I actually feel a little sorry for fsu imagine how livid their fans have to feel losing to us.

  23. mak4dpak 10/22/2012 at 7:39 AM #

Championship teams win championships by showing up for every game, and the coaches make sure they are prepared for every game, as every game should be a big game. So until that happens, we will just be good enough. TOB would do well to make some staff changes. Archer/Bible are too old school.

  24. Prowling Woofie 10/22/2012 at 9:09 AM #

    New. Offensive. Coordinator. NOW !

Playing half a game like it matters isn’t good enough. Bring someone in who can light a fire under these guys from the get-go. Can’t continue to put the game in the hands of the defense, relying on them to ‘keep it close’ week after week.

  25. mak4dpak 10/22/2012 at 8:20 PM #

Can’t wait to see our comments requoted Prowling Woofie, as we all know one here who thinks all the coaches are just peachy, and loves to question and quote our comments of those who don’t agree. Glad we could give him something to say. Can’t wait to see his rebuttle.
