Gottfather strikes again!! State lands two top 50 recruits

Did you dare blink in the time that Coach Mark Gottfried and NC State landed Cat Barber and Kyle Washington?

Last week we reported some exciting news on the basketball recruiting trail (click here) and earlier tonight we shared some thoughts and insight on some key prospects (click here)

Tonight, The Wolfpacker has reported that NC State has landed verbal commitments from TWO Top 50 players in the class of 2014. Twin brothers, Caleb and Cody Martin from Davie High School in Mocksville committed to Coach Gottfriend just days after returning from a visit to UNC-Chapel Hill. (Yes, you read that correctly.)

The Martin twins are 6’6 wing players who already had offers from Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, VCU, Tennessee and Miami. (Really feel sorry for Shaka Smart that these kids are smart enough to figure our why someone would want to be at NC State as opposed to VCU). They are generally ranked in the Top 10 of swing forwards and Top 50 overall prospects in the class of 2014; and, I am being conservative about the ‘Top 50’ overall ranking because the truth is that they are ranked in the top 35 of most rankings.

The Wolfpacker says, “The Martin twins bring a wide variety skills. Caleb has played more at SG, and Cody at SF. Both played for Team Loaded this offseason.”

The current scholarship configuration and scholarship spacing of NC State’s Basketball program is as follows:

Senior Class
(1) Scott Wood (Wing)
(2) Richard Howell (PF)

Junior Class
(3) CJ Leslie (PF)
(4) Lorenzo Brown (PG/SG)
(5) Jordan Vandenberg (C) (Redshirt)

Sophomore Class
(6) Thomas de Thaey (PF)
(7) Ralston Turner (Wing) – transfer from LSU sits out 2012-2103

Freshman Class
(8) Tyler Lewis (PG)
(9) Rodney Purvis (PG/SG)
(10) TJ Warren (F)

2013 Commits
(11) Anthony Barber (PG)
(12) Kyle Washington (4F/5C) – (Link to discussion as we have not yet posted on the blog)
(13) Open – center target
(1) Departure of Scott Wood – wing target
(2) Departure of Richard Howell
(3) Projected departure of CJ Leslie

2014 Commits
(4) Caleb Martin (wing)
(5) Cody Martin (wing)

I was just looking at these guys today, and wondering if Gott & Co were making a move on them. Good get, looking forward to great NC State b-ball for years to come. GO PACK!!

Seems to be a pattern emerging.

For the record, UNC was not interested. Just ask their fans…

“Roy didn’t meet with them on their visit here and told them to not to come to late night, but to come later in the season when he’d have more time with them. Seems pretty easy to read that they weren’t first on our hit list and would be slow played. So they took the bird in hand. Time will tell if we played that right, but remember when Roy took the opposite approach with the wears and regretted it later.”

    You’ve just GOTT to believe.

It’s been a LONG time coming.

The Gottfather is the man. Smart can stay right where he is, for all I care.

sshh, ya hear that, thats the sound of a power shift

  9. Lunatic Fringe 10/10/2012 at 10:56 PM #

Funny that most of the UNC fans are saying they did not offer because Roy did not have enough information on the twins.

You could also state that Roy was being outworked or has become complacent. 🙂

    Boom shakalakkaaaaa suckit

  11. packof81 10/10/2012 at 10:58 PM #

They might be like them Plumlee brothers. And we gott the pair. Huckleberry Roy might be sorry he passed on those two.

I know it’s only a matter of time regardless….but we really need to throw the house at Lutz and keep him in the fold for as long as possible.

Awesome recruiting coup. I’ll refrain from anything that might appear as gloating, however (suck it Roy, suck it big time Shaka).

Did I say that out loud?

ok. some of you guys. need to stop. this is a HUGE GET for us . lets not mar it with being petty . what did shaka do to us besides sticking with his school (he turned out other big schools too) sheesh acting like the OTHER fans. stop it and enjoy the recruiting get.

    Nice score!

I am perfectly happy with how the coaching search turned out and would not trade the current staff for one led by Smart. I don’t have a bone to pick with Smart, hope he does well and otherwise not a concern at all.

Live and work in Davie County and know the boys well. Don’t let the UNC crew try to claim they didn’t recruit these two boys. Hubert Davis watched them 3-4 times at AAU. They also met with Roy, though briefly, this weekend when they went to UNC football game with the rest of the basketball team. Word in DC is that Gott kept calling them and was really aggressive in going after them while Roy let Hubert do his work and didn’t make enough time for them last weekend. These kids are solid 4 year players with good heads on their shoulders.

Great background info, wolfmanmat – thanks.

You won’t hear anybody over on Idiot Central admit they whiffed on these two. Glad to hear that Gott is beating King Roy head-to-head on the recruiting trail. Hope Roy continues to rest on his laurels…

  17. logarithm 10/11/2012 at 8:18 AM #

Think Roy’s illness had something to do with his not having the time or energy to pour into recruiting these two or was he just busy trying to land somebody else? I mean, I certainly don’t wish bad health on Roy but if it happens to benefit us on the recruiting trail, I certainly wouldn’t ask that we handicap ourselves.

  18. StateFans 10/11/2012 at 8:23 AM #

    newclass,

I think you miss the point re: the Shaka comment. Goal was to make a broader point to everyone – including the media – that weren’t smart enough to recognize the blatantly obvious difference in the (potential) stature of programs.

We had to endure utter stupidity repeated and repeated about how VCU was as good or better job than NC State. It was so stupid that there was no reason to take time to rebut the position with commentary and facts.

But, as Gottfried makes the point for us I am not going to ignore it and not take advantage of the opportunity to emphasize it.

Lastly – you as “what Shaka did to us” as though he didn’t do anything other than turn us down. That is NOT what happened. He turned us down…AFTER he accepted the offer and was into deal-point negotiations. He had clearly given us reason to wait a few weeks as his team kept winning.

So, I don’t have too much of a problem with someone simply not being smart enough to recognize the difference between NC State and VCU. I DO have a problem with someone whose behavior had negative impacts to our process, our public perception and our University.

Didn’t Roy have enough energy and time to go to the football game this weekend?

  20. wolffpride 10/11/2012 at 8:49 AM #

Just an FYI, I read on our rivals site (The Wolfpacker) that it was Rob Moxley that headed the recruiting on these boys. The simple fact is that we have a great staff on hand. Moxley and Early have great recruiting reputations and Lutz as well. Lutz also is a great X’s and O’s coach. Once again we have to give credit to Debbie Yow for having the vision to build such a powerhouse staff. I see us having much success in the years to come, in all sports.

  21. wolffpride 10/11/2012 at 8:57 AM #

Fingers crossed that Dominic Woodson verbals this weekend after his visit. I like him the best of the three center prospects that we are going after. He has an established post game that is really kind of a throwback to the oldschool bigs. Just think of Reggie Johnson on Miami and Woodson is similar, hard to stop in the paint.

If any of you are going to primetime with the pack (or know anyone going) then make sure to show this guy some love. He recently said in an interview that he thinks he will probably go unnoticed considering “Cat” Barber and the Martin twins, among others, will be there. You cant miss the dude at 6’10” 300!

  22. Cabin Creek Wolf 10/11/2012 at 9:38 AM #

Dear Debbie Yow, show the coaching staff the money! Wow. Good gets.

Also, I’m not trying to be dividing d-bag, but, there’s no reason or room to make comments about coaches who didn’t take the job. Folks, be grateful that Gottfried came to NCSU and he and his staff are doing the job on the court and recruiting trail. If we had to endure all those slaps in the face and being kicked when down so many times, then it was well worth it.

    GO WOLFPACK!

  23. rtpack24 10/11/2012 at 10:09 AM #

These guys are top 30 players and will rise in the rankings over the next year. Talked to someone this morning that had just hung up talking to Roy and he was pissed that we had landed the twins. Look for another “big’ committment this weekend.

  24. gcpack 10/11/2012 at 10:23 AM #

Don’t get me wrong, I love to beat the Holes anytime we can but maybe Roy did get outworked. Could be that his recent problems with kidney tumors took time off from recruiting for him. Just a consideration.

However I doubt any coaching staff is working harder that State’s. Lutz and Moxley are pounding it.

Enjoy it while you can, I have heard that when Lutz gets his next head gig that the other two assistants will likely go with Lutz. I suggest Debbie Yow start saving up to make them an offer they cant refuse.

Great news all around though. Sounds like the Pack is back.

  25. PackMan97 10/11/2012 at 10:43 AM #

I’ve felt all along that our assistants aren’t guaranteed to jump nor is Lutz guaranteed to bolt for a HC job. That said, he’ll have opportunities, it’s just going to depend on how much he wants to be a part of a title contender vs running his own show (ditto for the assistants).
