WRAL: Thorp to step down at the end of the school year

According to WRAL, Thorp is on the way out.

 

 

 

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Holden Thorp will step down as chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at the end of the 2012-13 school year, sources told WRAL News Monday.

The move is expected to be announced Monday.

UNC’s flagship campus has been beset by scandal for the past two years, including an NCAA investigation of the Tar Heel football program and internal probes of possible academic fraud in one department and questionable travel expenses by the school’s top fundraiser.

The N & O now has a story up with this interesting quote:

Wade Hargrove, chairman of the Board of Trustees, said the board tried to talk Thorp out of stepping down.

“Holden Thorp has done an exemplary job as chancellor, especially in improving a wide range of processes and academic and fiscal management procedures,” Hargrove said in a news release. “It is inspirational to see the passion that Holden has for the University and the positive impact a research university can have on society.”

    So this will be eight months of an excruciatingly (bad for u*nc but a good show for the rest of us) slow exit for Thorp. I wonder if any of those ongoing investigations will wrap up while he’s still employed. Also wondering if the BOG will kick off any further investigations into the irregularities in the chancellor’s tenure (i.e. hiring practices etc.)

    Working out that hush money package. Got to hand it to them, they have the whole mob thing down pretty well. I wonder if they’ll have cupcakes at the farewell event.

    So what do we really end up with? Rogue football coaches, department heads, academic advisers, athletic directors, and now chancellors. All allowed to leave or ‘resign’. All still getting paid, at taxpayer expense. When does the public finally become outraged?

    I wouldn’t be surprised if Thorpe leaving was an acceptable punishment for the BOG…..UNC will now be cleared of all wrong doing and all coaches will be given new private cell phones.

    Expectations are high. The new chancellor will be expected to keep all fraud and cheating from becoming public.

    This doesn’t surprise me. I, and many others, have predicted this would eventually happen. He is, and always, was in way over his head – a deer in the headlights with a false sense of entitlement. It took the pressure and embarrassment of continuing revelations of the depth of the corruption over there, but the BOG finally did what had to be done. They will get an outsider this time around, just like State did. Whoever comes in better come in eyes wide open with a distaste for the status quo, and not drink the Carolina Kool-Aid, or it will be more of the same. And, even if they do get an outsider who has the wherewithal to root out the corruption, the BOG is going to fundamentally have to change as well.

    And so it continues .. just Friday it was reported by WRAL “No reprimand for Thorp after private meeting with UNC board” and Holdie himself stated “”They were concerned about the situation, but they were very appreciative of the work that I’ve done,” Thorp said.”

    But over the weekend, and just after this meeting, he realizes what’s best for UNC is for him to step down. He figured that out all by himself.

    So we’re supposed to believe, again, that there was no cause and effect here, just coincidental timing (again).

    “He will return to his work as chemistry professor after leaving the chancellor’s office, officials said.”

    I’d keep the combustibles away from him for a while.

    As has become typical for this situation, the stories don’t add up about Thorp’s departure. One hand knows not what the other hand is doing/saying. Hargrove’s statement does not jibe with the idea that the Board spent the weekend working out a package for Thorp’s departure so UNC could “move on.’

    What is it this time we are supposed to believe?

    Did Thorpe step down after Wade Hargrove begged him not to, or was Thorpe shown the door with a parting gift so “UNC could move on?” Certainly, it seems everyone who has stepped down amidst this scandal to date will for the indefinite future continue to be on the tax payer’s dime. Therefore, a parachute for Thorp would be (sadly) expected.

    It’s just unbelieveable that these folks continue to step all over themselves and mislead the public. Is there no end to the trickery?

    Further, I think this situation gives rise to some interesting questions. Thorp clearly had the support of many powerful people and politicians nestled in and around the Chapel Hill family. Is this move the official divergence of two sects of the UNC “powers that be?” Will this bring the ire of Thorp’s supporters previously complicit in a coverup? Has Thorp simply had enough of such a coverup?

    One cannot help but wonder how much an honest man can take of systematic trickery before he jumps ship. When is enough enough?

    Further, assuming this is yet another body UNC has thrown under the bus to deflect attention from the larger problem there, isn’t it odd that given the varying stories that landed people under that bus there are drastically conflicting ideals that simply cannot coexist assuming an intellectually honest assessment of the situation?

    The undercarriage of the bus is rittled with rogues. Yet now there is the head of the entire institution under there with them?

    When will the people who should care about this step back and realize that the stories just don’t add up?

    I have had the opportunity to meet and briefly talk to Holden Thorpe on a couple of occasions. (disclaimer: my daughter is a student at UNC, but remains a genuine Wolfpack fan). He is a genuinely nice guy, and he is known around campus for being a “buddy” to the students. He will walk around and strike up conversations at random with students, and he sincerely loves UNC. But, honestly, my impression of him is that he is not a forceful leader or manager. Based on his personality, I just can’t see him going into a meeting, and slamming his fist on the table, and cleaning house of any corruption. I get the distinct impression that he would be more careful not to hurt anybody’s feelings. I say it’s time for a Monteith, and a good house cleaning.

    I agree with several comments above…

    1. Their stories don’t quite add up…

    2. Most all of ^this contradicts Newton’s first law…(yes I took Physics at NCState..did very well too…)… for those who didn’t what I am saying is simply “Actions In != Actions Out”

    3. What we are “seeing” , I believe, is the tip of the proverbial iceberg … just the barely visible evidence of the mother of all internal political wars… a Battle Royale between the Academics PTB and the Athletics PTB…

    Really makes no sense on the face of it….

    1. Badour, Kupec and others hired BMFD, renovated the stadium, upgraded the AFAM studies dept… etc,etc,etc…. starting long before HT shows up as Chancellor…

    2. Kupec joins HT && Academics and gets rid of BMFD && Badour

    3. Athletics want to get rid of HT…

    4. Kupec wants AD job but HT and Academic hire Bubba…

    5. Bubba gets HT to get rid of Kupec…

    6. Now …. who pulled the f%^&ing trigger on HT ….

    Academics or Athletics ????

    This is what happens when you don’t get in front of situations like they have in Orange County. Holden eventually got taken down by a system he didn’t set up, but decided to try to cover up. Another victory for truth.
