Volmageddon – Why It’s So Emotionally Devastating

After a full night’s sleep…it doesn’t feel one bit better. Last night was an unmitigated disaster. The opportunity the game presented (to make a statement on the national stage) will not be repeated. Even if we win the ACC – admittedly a laughable notion right now – we will just be the new sacrificial lamb put up for January slaughter. A feeble reminder of why the college football world can’t wait to be rid of the BCS.

We can’t even judge what kind of team we really have. The massive suck from Glennon and Amerson means that we don’t really know anything about the other 20 guys. If the unquestioned offensive and defensive leaders get their heads straight…will the guys in the trenches become the fatal flaw? We can have no idea.

No matter what, NC State had a big opportunity, against a name program that we matched up well with – on paper. And we absolutely embarrassed ourselves. The final score could have been oh so much worse. The way the roster is set up, this was the perfect year to face such an opening night test. In short, we had the ideal setup, and we didn’t even come close to taking advantage. Plain and simple, that is extraordinarily disheartening. It will be a long damned time before most of us can generate any enthusiasm for our football program. Mild amusement and interest is all we have left.

For me, this is problematic at a macro level. I genuinely believe that our limitations as a team in a pedestrian conference, with a natural recruiting base that’s average and significantly overfished…the Dick Sheridan/Tom O’Brien model is the only way for us to succeed. And despite being even more accomplished than Sheridan…Tom O’Brien couldn’t replicate even that ceiling, let alone break through. It’s very likely that our next coach will be worse, or immediately leave for greener pastures. NC State is simply not a legitimate player in the college football world, and it will take lightning in a bottle for it ever to be, even on a limited, temporary basis.

I suspect it may come at the end of the season as well. Thankfully we have a clean program to pass on to the next coach. I am hoping for a balls to walls in your face coach next time. Basically a successful version of CTC. Maybe a little less flash but all the same excitement. Until then TOB is the man and I will continue to support them.

TOB will run a clean program and that’s why I would keep him around. BUT, his loyalty to his assistants is a big fault. Love Dana bible, but he’s still calling plays that everyone else used 25 years ago. All our runs are up the middle – nothing outside – unless the back sees the hole is closed an bounces around end (thank you Mustafa). Why do we have even bother having a fullback on the team? We have one back in the backfield and send him out on a pass route most of the time instead of leaving him in to block. Winkles is a big guy who could offer Glennon some time and protection. Mike Archer had the worst defense in college football at Kentucky and we hire him? I agree – Tenuta should be made DC and a new OC with some up to date offensive plays brought in.

Typical SFN. Thank God there are no bridges where you are.

UCONN is no where near an SEC team. i predict we bounce back with a good performance and do well in the ACC this year. There is a bog difference between the ACC and the SEC and we have to “conquer” the ACC first before we worry about stepping up.

I am tired of TOB. His record says it all. In sports you ARE your record. The only compliment I hear is that he runs a ‘clean’ program. He’s suppose to do that so he can only get so many points with me on that one. If he wants to keep his job he needs to win more games. .500 is not good enough; not if you are going to market yourself as the premier team in the state; not if you are selling lifetime rights.

You can’t coach fast. You have to recruit it.

  6. Tuffy2 09/01/2012 at 6:23 PM #

When you don’t make any adjustments in a game if things are going wrong the Losses each week come fast.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Seems that Archer fits this to a tee. The D looked like it was pre Tenuta time.

For some of you who will say it is only one game surely live under a rock and have been for sometime now.

The really big thing that jumped out at me was the talent difference. They had playmakers at the skill positions and a ready supply of very good d-linemen who chewed up our o-line. Talent and depth. They may not be up to Alabama or LSU talent levels, but they were far ahead of us. I didn’t know if we would win or not, thought we had a chance to play a good game, but I really did not expect us to get dominated like we did last night. Yes there were stretches during the game that we looked competitive, but when you look at the overall game we just didn’t have the horses to win this one, IMHO.

Interesting comments. It is almost like we are given an opportunity to show our stuff based on what we did last year (the comeback, bowl, etc.) and then the stuff we show is our warts, dirty underwear, (fill in the blank).

The motivational comments are interesting. I listened to the blather about the UT coach being coached by TOB. Said, if I recall, that he was the “peace maker” when TOB (the OL Coach) got hostile and wanted to send the entire OL on a suicide mission.

I DO have difficulty in conjuring up an image of a really bent out of shape, clip board throwing, four letter word uttering TOB. Maybe (since he is about my age, he has mellowed).

If I am correct, this is the last year of his contract. I personally do NOT know what the season will be like and probably neither does he or the team.

BUT, if he does not perform up to the expectations of AD Yow, then I have NO fear that he will NOT be on the sideline next year and that his replacement will do a great job (RE – Gottfried….and this comes from the most loyal, outspoken (stupid some said) and fanatical Sidney Lowe supporter). I do tip my hat and pay homage to Debbie Yow. She, along with Dr. Woodson, have brought back the enthusiasm to athletics.

NO, if your rears are already on Sunshine overload, I will turn off the pumps….BUT, I will add that our Athletic Programs were decimated by the witch hunt for Valvano (me….sarcastic and vengeful….not ME). Our AD was run by a bunch of inept folks (some of them good WuffPackers, but with not REAL management talent). It has taken almost 20 year to tear down and destroy what we once held in such pride in the 80’s

Unfortunately, it will take some time to rebuild it. However, as long as we have Dr. Woodson and Dr. Yow, I have hope.

This does NOT address nor solve the immediate problem…..how to understand (endure) the football season.

BUT, I do think that TOB will make some adjustments….At times last night, Mike Glennon looked like TOB was a genius when he parted ways with Russell. BUT, remember, Russell would NOT have been here this year.

He and J. R. Sweezy are in the land of rain and liberalism in Seattle.

Thanks for all the comments….I have NOT yet completed Jimmy V’s perfunctory 24 hour mourning period and my wife still has locked up my weapons and all sharp instruments….

Nobody is jumping off bridges. In fact, most of us seem to think we will actually go on to have a pretty good year. The problem is it is same ole same ole. I have no confidence whatsoever we will be a championship team. We’ll beat some we probably shouldn’t and likely lose the typical TOB WTF game. He is a good coach. But not great. Not at all.

I’m going to repost what I said last night in PG format because The 1800 Reposado was typing last night.
I want a new F’n coach. Revert that. I just want to see different football. I’m tired of watching us run HB Delay out of the f’ing shotgun and I am really sick and tired of being slanted to death. Quick slants, quick slants, quick slants is all they did to us the whole game and we didn’t do a dag thing about it. Quick slants and 3 big plays is all they had on offense and it was all they needed. No adjustments were made at all during the game by the staff. Hell, Amerson got burnt by a white kid on that one long TD. A f’ing joke for a football team all the way around.
That being said I went back and looked at the stats this morning. They scored immediately off both of our first 2 turnovers. You take away the reverse touchdown by Patterson and Tennessee ends up with 36 carries for 119 yards or 3.3 yards a carry. They all should be held accountable for shitt.ing the bed last night and we shouldn’t point fingers at any one given entity.

But it IS just ONE game! Don’t give up, don’t ever give up. Not to say I’m not disappointed, but everybody’s an expert. We are STATE! Let’s git ‘r done.

To people saying we should bounce back next week because Uconn is not an SEC team, that is the problem. TOB gets his 7 wins against fbs teams and the ACC. Big games like last night we look mentally unprepared which is unacceptable. Add to that keeping Archer around and running the same draw up the middle and I ask how people can be satisfied or get excited by teams with this staff.

  15. lawful 09/01/2012 at 7:42 PM #

I would transfer and sit one year to someplace like UCF. Its not just 1 game its 64.

  16. coach13 09/01/2012 at 7:42 PM #

The thing is any chance of a magical season is gone. We know what’s next. A crappy start of about 2-4, followed by a decent end of 5-1, and finish 7-5. Go to a crappy bowl. TOB comes back next year, and we have not gotten any better as a program. This is supposed to be TOB’s peek year? Most experience team that is all his? I’ll keep watching but the enthusiasm is completely gone right out the gate.

We reel off 11 in a row and then play Louisville again in the Orange Bowl. Yay spaghetti!!!!

  18. Wulfpack 09/01/2012 at 7:51 PM #

It is NOT just one game. That is much of the problem with the mindset. It was THE game we had to win to garner any kind of real national attention. News flash – the ACC blows. I know UT has been a middle of road to bad SEC team, but they are still better than 90 percent of the ACC. It was our chance. And we blew it in a big way. So yea, go beat UCONN and and all the crap schools on the scheduler, but it means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Same ole same ole is all I’m saying.

I wish TOB would retire, with his senior coaches, they are out of touch with the college game. Still locked in time. And if he is to stay, then bid Archer/Bible, farewell. We looked so impressive in that long scoring driving, and even going on 4th down once. Thought maybe things had changed, then back to the same ole, same ole! We need some coaches with some fire and enthusiasm. Boring best describes the present staff.

  20. ColoradoWolf 09/01/2012 at 8:01 PM #

Wow. Most of you guys really need a therapist. Again, the lack of success last night is dwarfed by the negative hyperbole on this site.

I am not happy about last night. Sat at midfield 12 rows from the field. Saw the entire game. Rather than giving up on any chance of success this year, I’d like to see how the season unfolds.

Coach O’Brein’s contract runs through 12-31-2013. See http://www.coacheshotseat.com/CHSNCState.pdf

  22. mak4dpak 09/01/2012 at 8:23 PM #

We do that every year, and are just good enough, but that is it! Never moving up, just a middle of the road team, year in and year out. A reflection of the coaches. Maybe they need the therapist.

  23. XpatriateWolf 09/01/2012 at 8:29 PM #

I get frustrated with the coaching staff but I flatly refuse to join the fire TOB bandwagon until he loses to UNC…if this were basketball and we had a coach who kept posting mediocre records but was beating the heels year after year I think most fans would give him considerable leeway…for now I’m willing to extend the same courtesy to TOB

  24. mak4dpak 09/01/2012 at 8:52 PM #

As much as I loathe the tarholes, I would gladly lose to them, in exchange for a championship! Although I would prefer beating them, and winning the championship.

  25. TeufelWolf 09/01/2012 at 9:09 PM #

Well we won’t even beat UNC if we play Iike we did last night. We didn’t do one single thing better than the other team. We were simply out coached — not just by a little bit either. The only way I’ll feel better about last night is if Tenn goes on to play for the SEC championship and I don’t see that happening.
