Volmageddon – Why It’s So Emotionally Devastating

After a full night’s sleep…it doesn’t feel one bit better. Last night was an unmitigated disaster. The opportunity the game presented (to make a statement on the national stage) will not be repeated. Even if we win the ACC – admittedly a laughable notion right now – we will just be the new sacrificial lamb put up for January slaughter. A feeble reminder of why the college football world can’t wait to be rid of the BCS.

We can’t even judge what kind of team we really have. The massive suck from Glennon and Amerson means that we don’t really know anything about the other 20 guys. If the unquestioned offensive and defensive leaders get their heads straight…will the guys in the trenches become the fatal flaw? We can have no idea.

No matter what, NC State had a big opportunity, against a name program that we matched up well with – on paper. And we absolutely embarrassed ourselves. The final score could have been oh so much worse. The way the roster is set up, this was the perfect year to face such an opening night test. In short, we had the ideal setup, and we didn’t even come close to taking advantage. Plain and simple, that is extraordinarily disheartening. It will be a long damned time before most of us can generate any enthusiasm for our football program. Mild amusement and interest is all we have left.

For me, this is problematic at a macro level. I genuinely believe that our limitations as a team in a pedestrian conference, with a natural recruiting base that’s average and significantly overfished…the Dick Sheridan/Tom O’Brien model is the only way for us to succeed. And despite being even more accomplished than Sheridan…Tom O’Brien couldn’t replicate even that ceiling, let alone break through. It’s very likely that our next coach will be worse, or immediately leave for greener pastures. NC State is simply not a legitimate player in the college football world, and it will take lightning in a bottle for it ever to be, even on a limited, temporary basis.

“I’m sorry boys but our offensive line would have been embarrased by a high school team last night.”

Yeah, they ran through us like crap through a goose.

You guys are unbelievable. Fire the coach??? Already???
If Amerson (ONE PLAYER) plays as well as he did last year, we are in that game despite playing a team that was better than us at most positions.
If you expected to dominate that game, not sure why.

Here’s the only way to ever be a player:

    1) Somehow get invited and join the SEC.
    2) Hire a great, young, ambitious coach who can see the long view.
    3) Wait AT LEAST ten years.

“Waiting” won’t cut it! You have to DO things that make you better…Exceptional coaches, recruiters, and all of things that we don’t do very well.

A young ambitious coach might not be the answer. South Carolina tried that and it never got better until they hired a old coach from NC State and another “has been” that coached at Florida…And they still had to go through a couple of AD’s before it got better.

But, you and I are in total agreement about “where we should go” if we want to play football. Big fish in the little pond is not my vision.

If you don’t have a team that can out-physical your opponent, then you have to be faster than they are. We were both dramatically smaller and dramatically slower that the Vols last night. To me, that’s not as much of an indictment of our team as it is an eye opener as to how much better the SEC, even the middle tier teams, are than everyone else in the country. Unlike many of you, the sky isn’t falling for me. The team must learn from this game and move on. The goal that I have for the team is to get to the ACC championship game, and last night did nothing to impede that goal. If anyone had pipe dreams of national respect, wake up. Even if we had beat the pants of them last night, we probably wouldn’t have cracked the top 25.

No surprise to me at all. Met my expectations totally. Out played but mostly out coached. A typical O’Brien, Bible, Archer performance. From the day TOB was hired, I knew we couldn’t get better than mediocre. The man had no significant record to hang his hat. It takes that coaching staff half a season to get warmed up for crissakes. The silver lining to this cloud is Chancellor Woodson and Debbie Yow. When we finally dump this sh!t football staff, I’m confident we’ll replace it with youth, enthusiasm, experience, and creativity.

To the people saying they can’t believe some want TOB gone I would ask why you want to keep him around? 33-31 is a piss poor record why are you satisfied with that? I suppose we could have a worse coach but he was outcoached by Dooley last night so really how much worse could we do

“We said the same thing in bball, that we should be happy with HWSNBN or Sid because we cant expect any better. ”

I can assure you that I (and most sane folks around here) not only never said those words, but never came close to thinking them.

Thanks to an incredible father-in-law, I was able to travel to the game, enjoy an entire day of fun and watch the game from a box last night (as a Nashville, TN resident, I NEVER get to do that). Here’s my take:

    1. Although just a prediction, Tenn will be around 6-6,7-5 this year. They’re not that good, which is sad for what it says about us. I totally agree with BJD95 about this game being somewhat on Amerson and Glennon. If those two have their heads on for the 90 seconds finishing the 1st quarter, we have a 50-50 shot at winning this game.

    2. Dooley HAD TO WIN this game – bottom line! If we converted either the missed fg or the 4th down in the first quarter, halftime is a totally different speech in the Tenn locker room. It seemed like TOB came into this game knowing that he had 11 more games to define this season. Whether it’s SEC vs ACC or not, bottom line was one team came ready to do anything to win and the other came ready to see what would happen.

    3. The silver lining to my whole experience yesterday was hearing Debbie Yow at the pre-game party. Taking Tenn’s program as an example, you CAN do worse than an 8-4 Phil Fulmer. But you have to manage the premier sport in your athletic program proactively rather than reactively. IMHO, Debbie needs to do whatever she can to “coach” TOB to a 9 win season. THEN, immediately pull out all the stops to go get a James Franklin-type who can shorten the bridge to being successful again. No matter how much it hurts, this year DOES matter. The “down years” can be 1-2 or 6-8+ depending on how Debbie manages this year. Let’s go be the veteran team in the ACC we’re supposed to be, split with FSU/Clemson, and hope for some luck with available coaches after this year.

And great piece BJD. Not all of us need sunshine blown up our posteriors. If it’s a spade, call it as such.

You guys are nuts if you think Tom O’Brien will go. He is clearly the best coach we have had since Sheridan. I have been watching NC State football openers for 30+ years and you young guys have not been around long enough to know this, but we generally stink up the season opener. There have been a few exceptions but not many. I don’t know what is expected but we are not in a power conference and we are not a football powerhouse. Can we have a very good team once in a while? Sure we can. But there is a lot of competition for talent in our area, and it is very unlikely we are ever going to be a perennial powerhouse in football. The most we can hope for is to take the field each week with a team that has a chance to win any game they play in. The people who are blaming Glennon for last night don’t know what they are talking about. The o’line was getting abused all night and Glennon was having to throw way too quickly causing mistakes. We will get better as the season progresses. This was a non-conference game. It really didn’t matter. Did you guys think we were going to go undefeated or something? Things will improve. Just like last year. Quit being such downers and give things time to get better.

  12. BJD95 09/01/2012 at 12:49 PM #

To clarify, waiting 10 years means it will take that long to upgrade talent and see if the new staff has what it takes to survive and thrive in the SEC gauntlet. Can’t expect results right away.

The ACC is a road to nowhere. And we are not even a good job by ACC standards. The problem is we don’t have a great natural talent pool, and don’t have anything to differentiate ourselves (such as, the opportunity to stay close to home, live in a city environment, and still play at the SEC level). We pitch the same thing as everybody else, after the cream of the crop goes out of state.

  13. BJD95 09/01/2012 at 12:54 PM #

Packster – I agree that TOB is the best coach we have had since Sheridan. That’s why I’m so down, in the modern college football environment, the Sheridan model no longer produces very much. And since that’s the best path I see for NC State as a member of the garbage ACC…I’m left feeling pretty hopeless.

I think TOB is a good to very good coach. This is the consummate TOB team. Yet last night still happened. Very disheartening.

  14. charger17 09/01/2012 at 12:57 PM #

Packster, totally agree on Glennon’s O-line problems. However, a redshirt Senior quarterback should know better than running 10 yards back into his own end zone only to cause a safety. Honestly, the interceptions, I’ll give to you, they were ultimately an O-line problem. But giving up 2 points, field position at their 40 after the ensuing punt, and totally handing away momentum and ultimately the game only b/c you can’t throw the ball away or go down on the 5 yard line is SO frustrating.

There were a LOT of problems last night, don’t get me wrong, but that single play told me that Glennon wasn’t ready for last night.

  15. Thinkpack17 09/01/2012 at 12:59 PM #

I don’t hang all the blame on the secondary, Amerson was indeed terrible but we got 0 pressure on the QB. No one can cover a skilled receiver for 7 seconds with a talented quarterback delivering the ball from a pocket so comfortable he could set up his lazyboy.

Tennessee is a much better team than we are. Bigger, faster, stronger. We had to play way above our heads to get a W last night. I give the boys credit for the fight they put up.

  16. Packster 09/01/2012 at 1:02 PM #

He def made a mistake there. But you have to remember that nerves play a part. It was his first REAL big game on a national stage. He played great on many other plays. As far as the coach, I once thought like many others on here do now, which is try a new coach. We have tried lots of new coaches in my lifetime and I specifically remember losing to Carolina like umpteen times in a row when we did. And trust me, those were really depressing times. At least we are competitive now. (I think) Be careful what you wish for. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

    They took our jobs!

Atrocious. Both the offensive and defensive lines got blew up more than Brianna Banks. And that’s why I don’t hang as much blame on Glennon, aside from his stooopid move that led to the safety, and Amerson. Couldn’t block the Vol defenders and couldn’t penetrate their d-line. Can’t win when that happens.

    On to UConn…

  19. gotohe11carolina 09/01/2012 at 1:15 PM #

Fire archer, let tenuda tun the d, we will blitz. we will get pressure, things will get better.

I get so sick of watching us send 3 and 4 and getting 0 pressure.

Our program has a lot stacked against it, which was detailed in this entry by SFN. Among the things SEC programs have, none is bigger than the acceptance by adminstrations, fans and media that athletes don’t need to be serious students. The junk that has come to light at UNC no doubt is also in place (on some level) at every SEC school. And its just accepted as part of the game. What you’re seeing from N&O about UNC’s scandal would never happen in an SEC market because its not news – its just how things are done. And as a result, everyone benefits and money is made. I’m not saying I agree with that. And apparently neither does ACC administrations. We like to think we’re above that so we don’t condone it among our programs (though I’m sure corners still get cut to a lesser degree). But to get and keep the calibre of athletes that SEC schools do (you can throw in much of the Big12 and Oregon as well), these things are permitted – just not talked about.

We are likely never going to go that route. UNC tried it and got busted. As such, the ACC can be competitive but will struggle to keep pace. That’s just the decision we’ve made and the way it is. So we’ll have to enjoy Wolfpack football for what it is, on the level it is. And hope that we can find national glory in traditional areas of excellence such as basketball and baseball.

    “They took our jobs!”

    LOL. Nice.

“Wow- the gest of this article, ncsu is and never will be good. How about next time write about what went wrong, or how we can be better. I can say with confidence that no one wants to read this negative junk. Save us all some time and post this in a forum or call someone, but don’t post this on the front page. Think about what you’re doing.”

Name one thing that was written that wasn’t true. Was it negative? Yes, of course. But we are who we are and right now we just aren’t very good.

I’m sort of on the fence regarding TOB. He’s going to run a clean program. He beats UNC-CHeat every time. And every year he’s going to get between 6 and 8 wins and have us playing in some minor *.com bowl.

Can we really expect to do better than that on a regular basis? Truthfully I don’t think so. The high point for this program over the last 30 years was the season CTC got us a Gator Bowl win over Notre Dame. History would suggest such a season is the exception, not the rule.

But IMHO it’s typical of NC State football that it isn’t even Labor Day yet and I’m already asking “Is it basketball season yet?”

Wow pack84, I certainly would not want you to be my company’s motivational speaker.

    Don’t worry … we’ll be better next year …. uh .. yeah

  25. Avid109 09/01/2012 at 4:42 PM #

This is typical for a TOB coached team. There are some games that he cares about and gets the team fired up (like the UNC game), while with other games, he just goes through the motions. Last night, he was going through the motions.

I think he is just treading water until he can retire. Will that retirement comes at the end of this season? I suspect it will.
