Karl Hess to return to ACC officiating

I must admit that this news is a big surprise to me. I genuinely expected Hess to be omitted from the ACC’s officiating roster this season and probably forever.

Regardless of this news, I would still be shocked if NC State saw Hess next season. But, the ACC has ‘shocked’ us before. If the truth be told, I guess the only thing less shocking about us getting Hess will be when the ACC trots him out for our visit to the Dean Dome in late February.

The question also remains of how the hell referee Brian Dorsey continues to be employed by the ACC? If you need a reminder of why I would single out Dorsey then you must click here for the jaw dropping recap.

The hypocrisy and tolerance for incompetence tolerated by the old boy network in the the conference offices in Greensboro never cease to amaze me.

Link to the Hess news today

After bowing out of the ACC tournament, veteran referee Karl Hess will be back in the conference officiating rotation this winter, an ACC spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday.

Hess’ status had been in doubt since he decided not to work the ACC tournament in Atlanta, an event he had worked for decades, after the ACC disciplined him for his handling of an off-court incident during the Florida State-N.C. State game on Feb. 18.

Hess ignited controversy when he ejected N.C. State and ACC legends Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta from their seats behind the scorers’ table during that game. The ACC later issued a rare public reprimand, while N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried was captured on video at a pep rally making pointed criticisms of both Hess and the ACC’s handling of the situation.

While Hess was at the Big East tournament in New York instead of the ACC tournament in March, the officials for the first game in Atlanta — Bernard Clinton, Mike Eades and Jamie Luckie — wore stickers with the inscription “KH” on their shoes.

Only four officials worked more conference games last season than Hess (19), who has called nine ACC championship games and worked three Final Fours. John Clougherty, the ACC’s supervisor of basketball officials, referred all questions to the ACC office.

The ACC does not discuss officiating assignments, so when Hess will work his first N.C. State game remains up in the air. In 1989, after a controversial call by referee Rick Hartzell went against N.C. State in an NCAA tournament loss to Georgetown, Hartzell was assigned to work one of the Wolfpack’s preseason exhibition games the next fall.

One important point about the difference between Hartzell & Hess: As much as I disliked Rick Hartzell and his long term record of ‘interesting’ trends when officiating Duke games — Hartzell actually physically APOLOGIZED to Coach Valvano and the team for his blown call in 1989. He actually admitted the mistake of his call.

Has Karl Hess admitted his mistakes?

Has the ACC office admitted theirs?

The best I can tell the ONLY ‘admissions’ of anything was that correct ‘policy’ wasn’t followed

I too was shocked but guess none of us should be. But this will be for sure watched closely by fans and members of the media now that these two clowns have shown their true colors.

I’d say they’ll both be on a really short leash.

“I’d say they’ll both be on a really short leash.”

Put ’em on a choke chain.

No doubt in my mind we will see Hesh ref a state game.

  4. Wufpacker 08/29/2012 at 6:04 PM #

Not surprised. Won’t be surprised when he walks onto the court to officiate a key game of ours and screws us to floor, either.

This is one where Deb should inform the ACC that he is not welcome on our campus. I’d forfeit a game just to make a point to the ACC and cause an uproar in the media. Public pressure is probably the only thing the ACC guys will respond to. Their lack of displining the refs at the ACCT was very telling. All four of the refs noted above should be blacklisted by the conference.

It wasn’t just the three refs in the first game. Dorsey and his crew had KH tape and planned to ref our game in the ACCT with the KH tape. Amazing that criticizing the ref gets you thrown out of a game. However think about how UNC-CH has reacted to their scandal — “Who are you to criticize us?”.

If yelling at the ref for biased calls would have gotten me thrown out of Reynolds than ever game Wirtz did in Reynolds would have seen me tossed out from just behind the team bench.

The ACC has proved just by putting Hess back on the roster that they could care less about the officiating mess they have let evolve. Count on it to see State catch the short end of the stick in more than one conf. game this year. Also I believe that the ACC front office has no problem letting Hess officiate a State game, especially away games.

I believe we have the leadership and the skill needed to play above some of those bias calls but even great teams come up short in those circumstances sometimes.

I pray that things will continually get better about this issue as the next few years go by, Lord knows we have had our share of heart-breaks concerning this.

Wolftown, I like that idea … of course every game after that the other refs would call 4 fouls on CJ and Richard before the tip off.

ancsu … as for being escorted out of Reynolds, my brother was a ’64 grad at VPI and he was escorted from their coliseum when he jumped the railing, walked on the court and handed the ref a pair of glasses during a game with WVU.

I, for one, can’t wait for the ACC to be so stupid as to assign ol’ Karl to ref a game in Raleigh. If he ever sets foot in our arena, he may not make it back out. We Wolfpackers have a VERY long memory. So go ahead ACC, test us.

This just proves that the people in charge at the acc office have very little gray material in their heads. If STATE fans get out of control at a ball game the fault lies with the useless acc office. At the very least we are due an apology from Karl Hess, Brian Dorsey, and the refs who put KH on their shoes. Swofford is a total JACKASS!

  12. ancsu87 08/29/2012 at 10:24 PM #

He is the worse kind of jackass. He is an arrogant asshole who thinks he knows everything and cannot self-reflect on his decisions to make himself a better person. It is a fault that many UNC-CH alumni I know have.

If Karl Hess is assigned one of our games, I hope he is booed off the court, and the arena is filled with signs saying, “Kick us all out because we all think you suck!”

  14. Wufpacker 08/29/2012 at 11:08 PM #

Whenever it happens (and it will happen), perhaps our players should wear stickers on their shoes that day. 😉 Maybe something along the lines of the Ghostbusters logo with Mr. Hess’ face on the ghost? Or just his initials with the same red circle with the bar across?

I would love to see them dare to call a technical for it. Assuming it was a home game they might not make it out under their own power.

Add me to the list of “SAY WHAT?”. KH’s comeback tour will definitely be interesting. It does make one ponder the intelligence (common sense) and the ability to clearly evaluate situations that will be UGLY and then decided to “Just DO IT!”

On the same vein, Brian Dorsey is probably WORSE than Hess. His partisanship makes the politicans in Washington seem “NON-Partisan”. He reminded me of the times when my grandchildren are whining when we don’t do everything that THEY want to do.

They will learn to accept life’s decisions and go on. Where did Hess and Dorsey’s parents go WRONG…..maybe they didn’t have parents and are the off spring of some evil entity.

I’m betting that he WILL work at least ONE NCSU game….probably two…

  16. Rick 08/30/2012 at 7:29 AM #

This is the ACC sticking a fork in our eye.
Wait until the first game he refs for, er… against, us. Thinking about Hess reffing an NCSU reminds me of that great quote from Tombstone when Wyatt Earp says “You tell ’em I’M coming… and hell’s coming with me, you hear?… Hell’s coming with me! ”

Hess will be bringing some hell to NCSU

Unless the re-election of Hugo Chavez shocked you, you shouldn’t be shocked by this. Banana republics are all run the same way.

    Amen, tex. Preach it, brother

  19. ancsu87 08/30/2012 at 11:23 AM #

    LMAO … so true

  20. Alpha Wolf 08/30/2012 at 12:52 PM #

I would have paid good money for a clear view of the ref’s face.

  21. gcpack 08/30/2012 at 4:30 PM #

Would someone advise me on who exactly Brian Dorsey is?
I keep getting Brian Dorsey and ,I think the other ref is Brian Kersey, mixed up.

Is Dorsey the short black guy with the shaved head?

Its hard to remember who is who without a picture.

    thanks
