UNC’s Chris Hawkins pleads guilty on cocaine charges

Not too long ago I got sucked into a little verbal sparring with a Wal-Mart Tar heel fan who – to my astonishment – actually threw out the ‘insult’ of ‘Chris Washburn’. I kid you not. Almost THIRTY YEARS after the top rated high school basketball player in the country – who was heavily recruited by UNC’s Dean Smith – ‘disgraced’ NC State with the ‘awful’ crime of stealing a stereo (the horror!!!!) and effectively not filling out his SAT (because there were no minimum academic standards at the time), many Tar heel fans can come up with nothing better to say.

A long list of responses ‘arrove’ in my stream of consciousness but, I just laughed…and cried…and moved on. I hope my buddy is reading this today.

Christopher Hawkins, 30, a former University of North Carolina football player and a man implicated in the purchase of a jersey from University of Georgia football player A.J. Green, pled guilty Monday to possession of cocaine with intent to distribute charges.

Hawkins was initially arrested by Georgia State Patrol troopers on April 23, 2009 in Morgan County while driving a U-Haul truck for former NFL running back Willie Parker from Florida to North Carolina. According to courtroom testimony during the October 2011 trial, Hawkins was given a key to the truck and told to deliver furniture to North Carolina.

“Nobody told him there were drugs in the back of the truck,” Pate told jurors during the first trial.

However, GSP troopers located approximately 96 grams of crack-cocaine wrapped in duct tape, peanut butter and pepper in a Wendy’s fast-food bag in the locked U-Haul.

If Hawkins’ story is to be believed, then one has to wonder what role former UNC player Willie Parker played in this fiasco?

^That, of course, is just one of the many UNC-related angles of this story that will probably go forever unanswered. In light of all of the friendships and money that was directly and indirectly related to Hawkins and his relationships with UNC players (who still called him a good friend even after the ‘crap hit the fan’), it sure would be interesting to know the source of Hawkins’ money and whose hands ended up holding the gifts his money purchased.

If old Hawk is struggling for money today…I’m willing to bet that he has a lot of information and stories

That is some PRETTY legal work.

Did Hawkins testify in the first trial that he was given a key, but didn’t know there were drugs in the van, or did his lawyer state that on his behalf ? If Hawkins so testified, by pleading guilty of the possession with intent to distribute charge, didn’t he just admit to committing perjury ?

I didn’t know you could get that stuff at Wendy’s.

I too have recently been in the presence of a Wal Mart tar hole fan who trotted out Chris Washburn. Maybe they’re reading it from a script.

    Didn’t Derrick Fenner murder someone?

When are we going to see Kevin Madden’s SAT scores?

Bad press day for UNC-Rougemont, with legal stories hitting on all fronts – the amorous drug mule nutty professor lawsuit, McAdoo’s lawsuit, and now Chris Hawkins… things are unraveling in Orange Co.

    Wendy’s has peanut butter?

Master great comment. Years ago the N&O did an article and it showed that Madden actually scored below Washburn on the SAT.

I wonder if Mr. Hawkins was ever in one of Prof Paul Frampton’s classes.

If someone can find that link to Madden’s SAT scores being lower, I’d love to have that one as “ammo in the box” just to shut down the Walmarters…

Also anyone eaten at Washburn’s chicken place? I’m in Hickory next month and have thought about going over..

    “UNC-Rougemont” – That’s a cheap shot at Rougemont.

Probably depends on the Wendy’s. In some towns you probably gotta hit Hardee’s. Peanut butter and duct tape are likely both BYO I would think.

Nearly thirty years later, if Washburn is still their “go to” insult (and for most of the Walmarter variety it generally is), then I guess we’re doing alright.

Highstick: I live in Hickory but haven’t been yet. Heh, its on the other side of town and surprisingly enough, Hickory is fairly spread out so it would probably take me easily 20-25 minutes to get to. I have friends though that say its pretty good.

Peanut butter always throws my dogs off too. UNC Rouge makes Palin blush.

Was this actually a drug sniffing dog that found it? Or just a stray that jumped in the truck and made a beeline straight for the old fast food wrappers that smelled of old burgers and cheese mixed with peanut butter?

And 96 grams…that’s a shitload…don’t you wonder what happened to the remaing 16 grams…was that lost on the way to the evidence room…or was that in Chris Hawkins lungs from the past few days.

Treznor…thanks…come to think about it, I have a week in a house on the Mt. Mitchell Golf course that I won in a blind auction during the winter. Maybe I’ll run by Chris’s and pick some chicken up to take up there next week.

If this was 1989 he’d be looking at 100 years. Things could be worse I guess.

Not to mention Hawkins is still facing charges in Kinston for possesion and firing a firearm in the city limits after a wreck with another individiual.
