The Flagship wants its money back

If you haven’t already, catch up with all the recent batch of shenannigans over at The Flagship here (Rogueapalooza).

Clearly, UNC was swindled (again) by a rogue, but now Thorp means business and wants his money back (WRAL):

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina wants a professor at the center of an academic fraud probe to repay thousands of dollars for teaching a course inappropriately.

UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp told trustees Friday that Julius Nyang’oro was asked to repay $12,000 for teaching a 2011 summer course as an independent study rather than a lecture.

The State Bureau of Investigation is determining whether any criminal violations occurred.

More to come, count on it!

At this point, they’d be better off dead.

    “Two dollars…”

*CLICK* (switchblade comb clicking open, as the kid combs his hair with it)

    “…CASH!”

$12,000? Aren’t they currently still paying Blake, the agent, that much money per week?

I mean seriously, what a collection of idiots.

    What a JOKE!

The entire system is corrupt…they are SO CORRUPT, they don’t even realize it.

Take a look at when the curriculum in question was started. It doesn’t take a very smart person to realize that this was part of the plan from day 1. The goal was NEVER to educate the student athlete, but to allow them to cruise through the system and make certain they received their promised degree. Oh, and let’s not forget…make absolutely certain they are eligible to play, that’s why they went to school in the first place. They had no intention to learn anything, except how to play the system.

Now they’ve been caught and they act like it’s news to them, some 20 years later.

I wonder what Julius would have to do to actually get fired? I bet he could slap Thorpe’s mother and he’d still have a job.

  6. fullmoon1 06/10/2012 at 12:29 PM #

Well there goes the theory that they knew about this and let investigators know prior to the slap on the wrist thus escaping any further “punishment” if you want to call it that. Poor unc. THEy are being taken advantage of by the mean ol ncaa rules, professors, professional players and agents. They just can’t get a fair shake over there. Maybe this is finally the type of idiocy that will finally get them busted and punished for real but I doubt it.

$12,000 to lecture a summer class? That’s 5 days a week for 8 weeks or something? Academia sounds like a pretty sweet racket.

“$12,000 to lecture a summer class? That’s 5 days a week for 8 weeks or something? Academia sounds like a pretty sweet racket.”

Online classes now make it much sweeter.

  9. ppack3 06/10/2012 at 2:40 PM #

What about the other 54 classes that they paid someone 12k apiece to “teach?”

    Bullshit.

  10. ppack3 06/10/2012 at 2:43 PM #

They aren’t seeking money back for the other classes? Why just this one?

  11. Wufpacker 06/10/2012 at 3:03 PM #

Arrogance at its finest. I love it. Just keep pulling those loose threads Holden.

And what the hell are they complaining about? Julius has pretty much kept his yap shut thus far, basically doing what he was paid to do. He fulfilled his role in the farce and earned his scratch.

  12. Alpha Wolf 06/10/2012 at 4:12 PM #

This is blame-shifting at its finest.

Instead of taking responsibility for their lack of oversight, let’s hang the professor who did the dirty work so that the overlords don’t have to pay for their own crimes.

  13. GAWolf 06/10/2012 at 4:41 PM #

Eventually one of the scapegoats will fire back… then it’s on.

  14. JohnGalt78 06/10/2012 at 7:56 PM #

A head fake, smoke screen, “pay no attention to that chancellor behind the curtain”, diversion! BULL POOP!

Can’t WRAL find Nyang’oro? I’d like to know what he’s got to say about this.

  16. tuckerdorm1983 06/10/2012 at 10:39 PM #

Who advised these fine young academicians to take Mr. Nyang’oro’s class(es)???? Who knew what and when did they know it??? I think the only senisble thing to do is to fire Mr. Thorpe and clean house completely. As long as he is there the taint remains. Also get rid of Roy. He needs to go for a long time.

    Forget the $12k.

SBI needs to be taking a very close look at Julius’ finances. Eventually, the uncompensated tend to start getting chatty. If not chatty, there may be a good reason.

“The entire system is corrupt…they are SO CORRUPT, they don’t even realize it.”

Oh, they realize it. They are circling the wagons once more and scapegoating Nyang’oro to protect the basketball program.

Wouldn’t the students who enrolled in a bogus class be wanting to get their money back?

It doesn’t matter, they’re all on athletic scholarship – “The question is moot!”

“Wouldn’t the students who enrolled in a bogus class be wanting to get their money back?

So we the taxpayers are the the ones who paid for it. I want my money back.

12k? $12,000? They want twelve thousand dollars back? Not the millions they are paying the head coach, assistant coach, tutor, ex-players, and whomever else they have bought out. They just want the twelve grand back. Amazing. Simply amazing.
