State offers top 10 center prospect

In the mid-1970s, NC State barely missed out on a high school basketball center from the state of Virginia named Moses Malone. In the mid-2010’s, Coach Mark Gottfried is taking another swing a center named Moses from the same general vicinity (West Virginia).

It appears the Wolpack has offered a scholarship to 2013 prospect, Moses Kingsley. Kingsley stands approsimately 6 feet 9 inches tall and is generally ranked as one of the Top 10 center prospects in the country. In addition to Louisville and Memphis, he reportedly holds numerous offers from SEC programs like Alabama, Arkansas, Florida and Tennessee.

More from Backing the Pack.

According to his twitter account, Moses Kingsley has an offer from the Gottfather to bring his talents to the Pack. Aside from having a really cool name, the 6-9 post prospect is a consensus top 100 player and could be the best shot blocker in the class of 2013. Scouts use words like “good motor” and “tenacious” to describe the New Albany, MS product, and he has offers from top tier programs like Florida and Louisville. Kingsley and Kennedy Meeks would go a long way to easing the pain of the expected departure of Calvin and definite departure of Richard Howell after 2012-13.

I thought the only college team on Malone’s radar back then was Maryland. I don’t remember State being on any short list for Malone, who broke Lefty’s and Terp fans’ hearts by going straight to the ABA.

Coach Sloan talked about Malone’s lack of a shot after Lefty signed him.

For years the UMd Basketball Press Guide listed Moses under “Our Guys In The Pros.”

Can’t believe nobody has tossed out the obligatory “lead us to the promised land” quip yet. You guys are slipping.

I don’t think most people on here have a clue as to just how dominating a player Malone was in high school back then. Everyone back then knew that had Maryland or any other college landed Malone, they’d win the NCAA title. Even Bob Wade could have won it all with Malone. Moses was going to be the next Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton, rolled into one, but he went to the ABA instead. He didn’t need college ball to prepare him for the next level.

Whatever Sloan thought of Malone, it was obvious that the big man didn’t need a shot. After leaving the ABA for the NBA, Malone took Philly to the playoffs, and was asked how he saw it playing out. His reply was “FO, FO, FO”. Behind Malone, the 76ers promptly swept their first two opponents and needed only 5 games to win the NBA Finals. Malone WAS the promised land.
