Tyler Harris to transfer

Rising sophomore Tyler Harris has announced he plans to transfer…
wait…
I am sorry Tyler’s father has announced Tyler has plans to transfer.

I had hoped to see this kid develop into a solid if not memorable starter by his junior or senior year. Given the attrition we face next year (Howell and Leslie) he was all but guaranteed playing time so this decision came as a shock to me. That is until I read this article.

After reading the article “Tyler’s” decision becomes more explainable. It is a shame to see young men make hasty decisions based on lack of playing time and perceived slights. It is even worse to see an adult do it.

I wish Tyler the best in his future playing career, I think he would have had both a great college experience and basketball career at NC State. If there is any advice I would give him, it is to make the decision that is best for you, look at the whole picture and do not seek immediate gratification.

“This may not mean anything, but why wear that?”

Kids…why do they do anything? My little brother spells “my”-“mah”.

“Goin 2 da store wit mah big bro.”

Why would you use shorthand that’s longer than the real word?

I will not lose any sleep over this. He was an oxygen replinisher and gave us 5 fouls to use if needed. He hurt us big time in the Kansas game when he was in there. Don’t mean to sound like a dick but it is what it is.

“If there is one thing I expect from you BJD is the optimistic outlook”

Seriously?! After Gottfried was hired last year, BJD gave up on this program and said that they were never going to be good again.

    Unless you were joking, Rick.

I felt that if he stayed around and played for a few more years he could work himself into the rotation. I really thought he had potential. However, he was Sidney’s recruit. I am sad to see him go.

Transfers are part of life these days, I saw at stat couple of weeks ago that over 300 NCAA Div I Bball players had already announced they were leaving early or transferring. I wish Harris the best but no doubt he didn’t want another year of sitting on the bench and with a McD small forward recruit coming in, that is a Gott recruit, and we want to play uptempo, well he may have been riding the pine here forever. I don’t know that he would have started at any top program this past year as he did not finish around the basket well and opposing players had little trouble scoring on him. Good luck to him!

It ain’t over till its over. Gott and his staff pulled numerous rabbits from their hats to field this years team and look what they accomplished. I would be patient and wait to see what the team looks like in October. These guys want to win more than any of us, if that is possible.

I thought it said a lot that De Thaey got about as much playing time as Tyler during the season. I doubt that it will impact the team. I think it is always important to wish a kid well. Plus, Gott would have had to rename him “Calvin” next year because he would be stuck with two “Tylers” 🙂

It certainly impacts the team from a chemistry standpoint. One thing is for sure, next year’s team is a whole new ball of wax. Hope they bond early and improve throughout the year, peaking at the end like we did this year. We’re going to be good, but still a lot of work to do to get there.

    What took him so long?

    UNX had the same

^^^It certainly impacts the team from a chemistry standpoint.

If you meant “negatively” impacts, I disagree…this is addition by subtraction. I wish him well, but from all accounts, not a good teammate. Someone may want to revisit my comment(s) in the “How Gottfried handles disappointing Losses” thread from several months ago. I don’t have time, but writing was on the wall a while back.

Tyler is a good kid. His father is very involved in Tyler’s and his brother’s career. Problem for Tyler his dad thinks he is a 3 but he is growing into a 4. This is not a shock to staff. In the event we land Jefferson we should be in really good shape for next year. I wish Tyler the best. Hard on the kid because he really like school and his teamates. Unfortunately, his father thinks he knows best.

    Dammit. Well, good luck.

    PackerInRussia,

I also don’t understand his decision. His PT prospects at another school may not be any better. He was starting to get some playing time here. At best, he is changing horses in the middle of the stream.

I’m just more talking about the squad as a whole, Ed. New crop of freshmen and some deflections.

  16. YogiNC 05/03/2012 at 8:27 AM #

My bet is his father’s reputation will precede him, and that could make it tough to find a college who will take him, Certainly not a top tier program. He just limited his chances for success even more.

Man, I thought the stuff about his pops wasn’t too bad, but this takes it to another level:

    http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2012/05/father-nc-states-tyler-harris-will-transfer/1#.T6KBrbNYunp

“It’s not about shying away from competition, my son has never done that,” he said. “He loves to compete. He played well in practice and wasn’t rewarded. He was good enough to hold an All-American (Kansas’ Thomas Robinson) scoreless for seven minutes in the Sweet 16, but when the team lost six games in a row, they never changed their rotation to play him. He wasn’t recruited by Mike Gottfried, and he wanted to play his players.”

College is the best 4 years of your life before you “grow up” and go to work. I can’t blame Tyler for transferring. If he couldn’t make the rotation under Sidney Lowe’s players, how will he break through on a team featuring more competition from the freshmen and more-experience from the Lowe legacy recruits?

Coaching change is like a management change. Sometimes that change works for you. Most times, it’s time to move on. Nothing but business.

    Good Luck to Tyler Harris.

This feels like Damien Wilkins part 2 (though Wilkins was more talented and did get a whole lot of leeway). I feel sorry for Tyler, just like I felt sorry for Damien. Both had family members who felt that they were looking out for them, but who seemingly made it tougher on them.

Tyler will be at something like his 5th school in five years after the transfer. I don’t know if I agree with his dad’s assessment that they don’t shy away from competition. It sounds like to me that it’s their way, or they pack up their ball and go home.

I also don’t believe for a second the comments about Gott wanting to play his kids. There were only two players on last year’s roster that were Gott’s — Johnson and TDT. Neither one was a starter. The vast majority of the minutes went to Lowe’s kids, and seemingly based on merit. Harris just wasn’t good enough to break into the rotation.

I also find the comments about 7 scoreless minutes against Kansas a bit laughable. Dad mentions that he held the Kansas player scoreless, but there was no mention of the 0-3 shooting and 2 turnovers that were almost crippling. Pretty balanced analysis.

I wish Tyler the best. I think he’ll have to improve drastically to make a NBA roster, but I can’t blame them for trying. I felt Wilkins would definitely play in the NBA, but Harris is probably more realistically be looking at Europe.

My guess is that we’ll see Tyler transfer to a smaller school where he can be “the man.” I can’t see him going to a BCS program.

“Tyler is a good kid. His father is very involved in Tyler’s and his brother’s career. Problem for Tyler his dad thinks he is a 3 but he is growing into a 4.”

I’d have to agree with dad. Especially when you think about where he will play on the next level. Adding a post game to your bag of tricks can prove to be a tough task. John Henson was supposed to have one foot in the NBA before his freshman year because of his inside/out game. But his post presence was terrible until this year. Lebron is probably the best player on the planet and he is still working through the kinks adding it to his game.

I’ll admit my sample size is very small (Youtube clips and 30 minutes of game action) but I think his upside is more Kevin Durant than Kevin Love.

  21. Rochester 05/03/2012 at 10:57 AM #

but when the team lost six games in a row, they never changed their rotation to play him.

Refresh my memory on this six game losing streak. I know it felt like forever, but it was only four games.

Good luck to Tyler. Good riddance to his dad.

  22. MISTA WOLF 05/03/2012 at 11:09 AM #

First and foremost he didn’t hold Robinson scoreless during the Kansas game. He was lost while out on the court and was out of position almost everytime when we came down on defense. He missed 1(I know for sure)maybe 2 layups while in there and allowed 2 gimme layups to Kansas because he didn’t move his feet. That is at least a 4 point swing and possible 8 point swing. I almost had a freaking aneursym when I read his father’s comments from the article Baxter posted. Tyler is a role player and that’s all he will ever be unless he studies the game and improves his work ethic. Needless to say Tyler hurt us on the biggest stage(game vs. Kansas) of the last 20 or so years for the Pack.

  23. Mike 05/03/2012 at 12:18 PM #

I am sorry to see Tyler go as I am sorry to see anyone transfer. Too many t’fers, justifed or not can create a bad image.

My one point with Tyler always seemed to be attitude. As one who has studied body language and non-verbals, I was never impressed with his attitude. He always seemed to be sulking and unhappy. I know when I am sitting on the bench I am unhappy too (OK, cant really say from experience sitting on the bench – kidding) but that attitude seemed prevalent to me.

  24. Lunatic Fringe 05/03/2012 at 12:46 PM #

I am pretty sure Tyler had a couple fouls in 7 mins time that led to points and TDT is the only Gottfried recruit who rarely played so not really takin minutes from Tyler. I would say besides those items, the coach’s name is Mark, and we NEVER had a 6 game losing streak that Torrell was accurate in his comments.

    LOL. Geez.

  25. HPWolf 05/03/2012 at 12:58 PM #

Its a shame. The kid is athletic but needs coaching up a bit. A little maturity wouldn’t hurt either as with all young men. Everyone should wish him well. On the plus side it looks like we have a new scholly available.
