Ted Brown’s record is safe! Harris dismissed from BC

NC State fans no longer need to worry that the record for most rushing yards in Atlantic Coast Conference history could be held by a somewhat nondescript back from a program that has held conference membership for a metaphorical nanosecond rather than our own, Ted Brown. when it was announced today that Boston College’s Montel Harris has been dismissed from the Eagles’ program.

Senior running back Montel Harris has been dismissed from the Boston College football team due to a repeated violation of team rules, Coach Frank Spaziani announced today.

“Montel Harris has been permanently dismissed from our football team due to a repeated violation of team rules,” Spaziani said. “We are grateful for his contributions the past four seasons and will support him in completing his degree requirements and in his future pursuits.”

Harris (Jacksonville, Fla.) became BC’s all-time rushing leader (3,735) last season in the Wake Forest game but has been sidelined recently with a knee injury.

The following is quoted from a News & Observer article last year that rightfully proclaimed Brown the greatest running back in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

By the time Brown ended his career with the Pack – a total of 43 games – he had rushed for 4,602 yards and 51 touchdowns, plus 82 pass receptions for another 760 yards. Those totals don’t include 399 additional rushing yards in three bowl games.

Brown’s rushing record still stands, although Boston College’s Montel Harris will begin 2011 with 3,600 yards through 37 games.

That the record has stood this long continues to surprise Brown.

“Oh, gosh, yes, I’m surprised by that,” Brown, 54, said. “I sort of keep an eye on who’s doing what, but I’m not jealous of that record at all. Somebody will go past me, and that’s fine. That’s the way it should be in sports.

Sorry that Harris has been dismissed from school but glad Ted Brown’s record is safe. I’ll never forget the Penn State game I watched as Ted ran all over the Nittany Lions! My personal favorite game ever!!! Great attitude by Ted as well. Yes, records are made to be broken and it will happen one day but it’s safe for another year.

“…I’ll never forget the Penn State game I watched as Ted ran all over the Nittany Lions!…”

I was there for that one. Has to be one of the most amazing athletic perfomances I have ever seen. The whole stadieum was just watching in complete awe. I remember one run of about 45 yards with him carrying one Nittany Lion on his shoulder and dragging another holding on to his ankle while the whole stadium watched with eyes and mouths wide open. Amazing. So happy his record will hold.

    Theoretically –

Harris could complete his degree, transfer to another ACC school for his last year of eligibility and still break the record. Or transfer immediately and sit a year.

Not very likely – but possible.
    Unless I’m totally wrong.

Or transfer immediately and sit a year.

But this was already going to be his sixth year. If he sat out a year, that would end up being a seventh year. So I don’t believe that is an option for him. He could graduate and transfer without sitting out a year (a la Russell Wilson), or he could transfer to a lower division. But if he did the latter, wouldn’t that mean he doesn’t get a shot at the record (playing in a lower division?)

I think his only shot at the record is to graduate early and transfer without sitting out a year. And if he’s well short of graduation now (I have no idea either way about his academic standing…) then he probably isn’t completing his degree in time for football season.

Don’t think he can transfer to another ACC school without sitting out for a year (ACC intra-league transfer rule), he would run out of eligibility. If he transfers to a non-ACC school, any added yardage would not be part of an ACC total-looks like TB’s record is safe for now…

Pack78, that’s true. I hadn’t even thought about that. So no matter what, Ted Brown’s record is safe. Because he AIN’T going to another ACC school. I was thinking rushing yards, period, not ACC rushing yards.
