Annual UNC-CH spring game “attendance” charade continues

Alert readers will remember our coverage last year of the ridiculous 2011 spring game crowd “estimates” UNC-CH shamelessly promoted.

Nobody is surprised that they are at it again.  According to the N&O’s coverage, UNC-CH announced a crowd of 17,000 for this past Saturday’s spring game.

We will let you be the judge. Here are some pictures of the throng:

If ony this logic would work with the numbers in my bank account

  2. Trout 04/16/2012 at 10:34 AM #

Looks like 1700….they just added an extra zero

  3. dperjar 04/16/2012 at 10:35 AM #

They’re counting the roaches in the bathroom in this estimate.

  4. TopTenPack 04/16/2012 at 10:38 AM #

You seee, the line to the bathrooms are super long….

It’s almost disturbing that they cannot be more honest in their crowd estimates. What are they afraid of? Why can’t they call it like it is? That they feel it is important enough to lie about speaks volumes about them, and says more about them than it does about the state of their football fan base. If they would lie about something as unimportant as this, what else would they lie about?

I can only think of one reason to lie about this. They must feel like it would hurt their recruiting to have a low turnout for their Spring game. I can’t think of any other reason. And that is the scary part. If they would lie about this for recruiting (assuming I am right in that assessment), then what else would they lie about in their recruiting?

It makes them appear to be willing to do anything to perpetuate the myth of the Carolina Way. The Carolina Way is apparently to lie and do whatever it takes to cover up anything bad. But we already knew that.

I posted this on PP, but I think it fits here as well.

Alright, so here’s my best guess, based on the IC photos and taking some general assumptions of which I try to be on the high side to be fair (aka adding a few % points for people out of their seats / in the shade).

I’m going to be nice and say there is about 35% capacity in the first sideline shot, and extremely nice in saying 20% on the opposite. That stadium held 60k before the expansion, so lets say around 75% of their capacity was in the sideline double decks, the remaining 25% in the lower level endzone pre-expansion. So they should have something like 22.5k on each sideline and 15k in that endzone in the original seating at full capacity. They added Butch Mahal for 2980 additional seats.

    1st photo: .35 * 22.5k = 7875
    2nd photo: .20*22.5k = 4500
endzone (7% and being quite generous) + butch mahal (which was practically empty field level all game lets assume some patrons are inside at 5.5%) = .07*15k + .055*2980 (expanded seats) = 1050 + 164 = 1214

    Total: 7875+4500+1214 = 13,589 – 21.5% total capacity

You can rearrange the endzone / mahal if you want (realistically they could have had 1k in the AC mahal, but there were probably less than 400 people in the other endzone), but I think my approach there was very favorable / forgiving, so I’d love to know how they justified that 17k.

That “crowd” would fill almost 2/3 of the bottom bowl of one side… probably 9,3000. (Had to make it an EVEN number).

  8. primacyone 04/16/2012 at 11:58 AM #

    It’s AMAZING that they never UNDER estimate the attendance . . . . .

If it’s such a non issue, seems it would be just as easy and often that attendance is under estimated. But no, it’s always 40% greater than reality. The Carlina Way.

I guess half the crowd were in the offices editing the 216 records.

  9. TruthBKnown Returns 04/16/2012 at 12:00 PM #

You know, oddly enough, they can never produce photos that come anywhere close to justifying the lofty crowd estimations. Every photo is summarily dismissed as being pre-game, or 15,000 people using the restrooms simultaneously.

After the debacles of recent years, one would think a Carolina fan would produce a photo that justifies the crazy high estimates. But somehow, they never do.

The funniest thing about this is we all saw this coming well in advance, and yet, they still did it anyway.

Does it count if they move around and occupy different seats throughout the day?

  11. runwiththepack 04/16/2012 at 12:11 PM #

Maybe a super-rich, evil, tarheel booster bought 16,000 tickets.

Maybe all those hundreds of people have multiple personalities.

Maybe a fight broke out at a concession stand and almost everyone found the tussle more interesting than the spring game.

Chances are that one of the three above explanations is right on target.

  12. TheAliasTroll 04/16/2012 at 12:12 PM #

They are blatant and shameless liars.

  13. Hawkeye Whitney 04/16/2012 at 12:22 PM #

But I did hear that the gave Butch Davis the game ball, so that was kinda nice.

  14. Hawkeye Whitney 04/16/2012 at 12:24 PM #

I think they counted everyone who “likes” them on facebook as a “virtual attendee”.

  15. MP 04/16/2012 at 12:30 PM #

The N&O seems to have heard the rumblings and be onto them – “a crowd that North Carolina announced at 17,000” – They didn’t just state it as fact this year.

  16. TOBtime 04/16/2012 at 12:39 PM #

The cleaning crew takes up more space than those “fans”.

  17. CarnifeX 04/16/2012 at 12:50 PM #

Clearly, if you include the intimidation factor from all those pine tree’s, you’ll reach 17,000 attendees.

  18. Scooter 04/16/2012 at 12:57 PM #

As long as we keep beating them, UNC can say they have 92,000 and I won’t care one bit.

  19. packof81 04/16/2012 at 1:29 PM #

If they lie about stuff like this which really doesn’t matter, what does that say about the stuff that DOES matter?

  20. PackerInRussia 04/16/2012 at 1:30 PM #

TruthBKnown Returns, that is the point. As I said in the forums, it’s all excuses and no proof (and I ain’t just talkin about spring game attendance either)

  21. Pack78 04/16/2012 at 1:31 PM #

In the words of The Who from 1971 (Won’t Get Fooled Again):’Meet the new boss, same as the old boss’…Welcome to Cheater Hill Bubba!

  22. Hungwolf 04/16/2012 at 1:43 PM #

Lying and cheating only expected from the same folks that got caught piping in crowd noise on their radio broadcasts. Larry “Full of Bull” Fedora wearing the UNC-CHeat colors real well.

  23. old13 04/16/2012 at 1:58 PM #

Ah, th greatest tradition at UNC-CHeat: Another Lie; another Cheat!

  24. Codebrown 04/16/2012 at 2:22 PM #

17,000 according to same people that estimated Glen Beck’s rally.

  25. MrPlywood 04/16/2012 at 4:15 PM #

They need to rent an inflatable crowd and really fill that place up.
