[3:45 Update] UNC-CH Exodus: Henson, Marshall & Barnes to enter NBA Draft

3:20 Update
UNC-CH has released a statement to the media that Harrison Barnes, Kendall Marshall and John Henson will all enter the 2012 NBA Draft. Stay tuned….more to come

These departures will turn up the local volume on the speculation around CJ Leslie‘s pending decision that is discussed here. Interestingly, the addition of Carolina’s two highly ranked forwards – Henson and Barnes – will serve to drop Leslie in any projected NBA Draft. Similarly, future announcements from other big men and athletic forwards across the country like Kentucky’s Anthony Davis and Terrance Jones, Baylor’s Perry Jones, Kansas’ Thomas Robinson, Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger and even Illinois’ Meyers Leonard could serve to populate this year’s draft with SO MUCH front court talent that Leslie’s NBA prospects could be significantly watered down this year.

Original Entry
There are lots of rumors circulating in the area that UNC-CH’s Harrison Barnes, Kendall Marshall and John Henson all intend to forego their remaining college eligibility for a jump into the NBA Draft. Despite some comments to the contrary, it is also rumored that James Michael McAdoo’s decision to stay may not be 100% set in stone as of yet.

At least one of their decisions may come sooner than we thought. This news report just came out of Iowa (Barnes’ home).

DES MOINES, Iowa — KCCI sports director Andy Garman says former Ames High basketball standout and current North Carolina player Harrison Barnes is expected to make an announcement on his future today.Garman says Barnes has made a decision on whether to enter the NBA draft or stay at North Carolina. Barnes is expected to make that announcement later today.

If you have not yet read the Grantland article on Harrison Barnes, I strongly recommend that you click to it through this link and read it. Fantastic work.

It became a problem. In the Atlantic piece, Barnes admitted his reluctance to talk about his faith or his political leanings because he didn’t want to polarize the public. There’s certainly nothing logically wrong with this thinking — Jordan and Jeter built their brands using a similar line of thought. The difference, of course, is that Jordan didn’t say, “Republicans buy shoes, too” when he was still living in a dorm room in Chapel Hill. This is where the flattening logic of business turns into insanity. It’s crazy that Barnes was thinking about his brand before he played a minute of college basketball. It’s crazy that when Barnes struggled mightily during his freshman year, he was still thinking about that brand. And it’s crazy that before the NCAA tournament, Barnes felt the need to broadcast his brand through a national magazine by talking, of course, about his brand. The “all-business” rationale falls apart when the business is purely speculative. After two disastrous games in the NCAA tournament and a largely disappointing sophomore season, what, exactly, is the Harrison Barnes brand? What endorsement opportunities does he have right now?

I think each player is making the right move when you consider their individual circumstances. That said, I find their collective decisions interesting in light of recent events. It wasn’t that long ago that a group of highly touted UNC NBA prospects all miraculously decided to stay.

Perhaps the door has now been opened for State to contend for the ACC title. Thanks NBA! Hopefully Leslie will stay and increase his stock by playing another year. As for all the accolades of the 3, and defense of Barnes, who really cares? They are tarholes!

I find it hard to believe that none of the mock drafts I see has Leslie in the first round. Maybe CJL can use that as motivation to take his game to an even higher level next year and boost his stock. Properly motivated, he’s unstoppable.

Based on the comments here, there appear to be some hidden agendas (‘CJ is not ready… he will not be drafted as high… others are ahead of him… he could use another year…’). Well I am not going to beat around the bush – I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE CJ BACK NEXT YEAR! Having said that, I hope that CJ does what is best for CJ – not for me, the Wolfpack nation, or anyone else. CJ has given us a great year and we should thank him for helping to place NCSU basketball back on the national stage. If CJ decides to leave, I wish him the best.

Hope we can get a “bust” or 2 like Barnes.

As I said in my post, yeah, I’d like CJ back for selfish reasons…but ultimately, I would also like to see the young man get into a good situation for an NBA team where he excels and where the announcers are constantly calling his name and pointing out his roots as an NC State player.

NCSU84, I think CJL coming back is in his and our benefit. The two don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

Three years of college gets you awfully close to a degree. If that is important to CJ, he might stay, knowing he could complete the rest of his coursework over a couple summers or sometime down the road.

In any case I wish him the best. I can’t ever fault a twenty year old for accepting a multi-million dollar contract. Just stay hydrated, CJ…I don’t want to see you nursing leg cramps whether you are in college or on an NBA team. You should make enough money to buy plenty of gatorade to keep those electrolytes flowing!

If Barnes were to stay another year he could become the next Terrance Morris.

Nice post. Missing 1 crucial element though….Stillman White is gone too!! Haha. To be serious, Carolina will be fine next year(ie not miss the tourney or anything). They still have 4-5 McDonalds All Americans coming back. However, State will be better, even if Leslie leaves, and MUCH better if he stays. Arguably, better at every position now that Henson/Barnes/Zeller/Marshall are gone. The only position that is even close is Bullock/Wood .

    Any word on Amile Jefferson?

Rumor has it that McAdoo will be leaving as well. But I expect UNC to get the UCONN transfer but if not, say hello to brice johnson and desmond huebert as your starting front court for UNC next year. McDonald and Strickland will start in the back court and Bullock will probably man the 3 position.

Still not a bad team just not one that is going to challenge for top of the ACC.
