Why State Can/Will Win in Cameron

I will preface this by reminding everyone that I am the furthest thing from a wild-eyed optimist. I also don’t think this Wolfpack team is really that good (which is why I see ACC COY as a two-man race between Gottfried and Bennett, the two coaches who have gotten the absolute maximum out of rather limited personnel). So…how can I predict a win next Thursday at Duke? Especially in light of how choppy State’s play has been over the past several weeks?

First, with all top tier ACC squads having fatal flaws – I give great weight to matchups. And NC State matches up every bit as well with Duke as it matches up poorly with UNC. Though Carolina matches up poorly with Duke (as I predicted via e-mail to one of my Hole fan friends, I suspected UNC would be too stubborn to be as physical with Duke as they needed to be). NC State doesn’t have the talent luxury to be so stubborn. It also has three quite physical bigs to rotate in the lowpost. Physical play annoys the Devils, and interrupts their flow. And offensive flow is really Duke’s only card to play. Without that, they are an extremely average team, as they showed against physical defensive teams like Temple, Ohio State, Florida State, and even Miami.

Second, NC State has a full week to prepare for this game, and get rested in advance of a physical war. CJ Williams can get healthy. Lorenzo Brown can sleep and hopefully regain full confidence. DeShawn Painter can get over the flu. Side note – the rest of the team had damned well better have gotten their flu shots.

Duke, on the other hand, has another emotional game today. So…no rest, either physically or mentally. Assuming a win over the Terps (a loss today would blow up the Pack’s chances completely), the Devils will enter Thursday night coming off two emotional wins over teams they hate. Could there be any better a setup for a letdown? Is this not the perfect example of a “trap” game? And when the Pack’s physicality predictably annoys them, won’t things probably snowball further? I certainly think so.

Finally, although I believe NC State – like Virginia – is a “low ceiling” team in the ACC’s “reasonably good” tier…that doesn’t mean the Pack is incapable of having an especially good game and playing over their heads. And thus far, our timing has been pretty good (see State’s top effort of the year, resulting in its best resume win at Miami). In that sense, the lackluster play of the past few weeks is actually a positive sign – State can’t play like a good team every night, and picked a good time to be “due.”

Now, this is not to say that an upset is a lead-pipe cinch. Just because NC State is “due” for a good performance doesn’t mean it 100% will happen. Lorenzo Brown could get in foul trouble. Scott Woo could have a poor night shooting (and/or the man he’s guarding could score 50 instead of 20). Duke could lose today and come out loaded for bear. CJ Williams could tweak his shoulder early. Calvin Leslie could decide he needs to showcase his perimeter “skills” for NBA scouts.

But it’s all about possibilities, isn’t it? And Thursday night marks NC State’s best possibility of the 2011-12 season. It certainly won’t be on short rest (and a poor matchup) against the Noles, or the nightmare matchup against the Holes (anytime or anywhere). Very few commentators will expect it to happen in Cameron Indoor Stadium, either. But now, you know better.

That’s what makes this Duke team less able to grind out victories if you disrupt their offensive flow. They also don’t create as many fast break opportunities for themselves (which Austin Rivers would be great at converting). Defensive mediocrity, I mean.

There is no way for us to win if we don’t at least break even on the glass. But Howell, Painter, and CJL all have the ability to battle the Plumlees there.

It’s my impression that MG would certainly prefer to have a deeper rotation. We simply can’t do it without a performance dropoff that greatly outweighs the fatigue factor. We already play AJ more minutes than most NCAAT contenders would.

I never said that this year’s Duke team was great defensively, but their defense in Cameron will be tougher than most defenses we’ve faced this season, and we’ve had too many lapses of sloppy and careless ballhandling.

I’m not concerned about 3s unless we shoot too many of them, which is a primary reason our program has been greatly diminished in the past two decades. One of the reasons we’re a much better team is that we have a coaching staff smart enough to know that NOT taking a lot of 3s is the best road to success. Slowly but surely, we’re getting there.

I’m not looking for a miracle next Thursday, but we could win this one. We’ll probably get outrebounded, but that’s not what will beat us. What will beat us will be too many turnovers, which will incite the crowd and fuel Blue Devil baskets.

Duke overplays the passing lane and FORCES the man with the ball to dribble-drive. That’s what they give up. What they WANT is for you to make side-to-side; or, top of the key-to-the-wing passes for them to cherrypick for snowbirds.

We’ve given up a season-worth of those across-the-top of the key passes already. We HAVE to eliminate that long, wide, lazy pass up top as we start our offense. We need to run our usual sets, break as usual to the spots, then FAKE that pass & dribble-drive. Both the ball handler & the one across the top who faked receiving the ball will be open to catch & pop (or draw the foul from behind from the recovering defender).

If CJW initiates the O (instead of Zo or Alex) he will be MONEY on the fake pass; dribble-drive; then, stop-&-pop 12 footer.

8-12′ shots are ‘gimmies’ all night long vs. Duke. DRIVING the ball on the dribble to take that shot is key.

Scott, CJ, Howell, et al are going to have to dirbble twice and pop the shot. We do that, we win.

    We will not win.

We can play with Duke all say and all night, but this game will about scoring the ball. They have more and better shooters and will score the ball more than us.

Only way we win is if ALL their shooters are ice cold or Lo Brown goes for 25+.

    No Javi, No Win!

Howell will certainly give Duke fits IF HE WILL PLEASE STAY OUT OF FOUL TROUBLE. We’ll also need good games from Brown and Williams and great games from Calvin and Wood. If those things happen, we’ll certainly play respecatably in Cameron, which would certainly be better than how we played up on the hill.

I believe that this team is capable of beating any team out there on any given night. That’s where I start off because I’m seen streaks of brilliance from these guys.

That being said, our biggest handicap is execution, amplified by our inexperience with a quality coaching staff at the helm. I agree with BJD that this team isn’t “that good” but it’s not because they “can’t” do it.

Do I think they will win AT Duke? No, but I think we have more than a fighting chance.
