Hess Fiasco Update – Yow has contacted Swofford; ACC to issue statement tonight [7:39pm]

ESPN is featuring Karl Hess’ ejection of Googs and Corch across all of their networks during college basketball coverage tonight. Kudos to Andy Katz who criticized Hess at halftime of the Florida-Arkansas game for needing to have thicker skin and pointing out the margin in today’s game was an astounding 18 points at the time of Hess’ antics.

A couple of quick mind-boggling statistics to ponder for a moment before the news updates —

* Chris Corchiani played in 124 games for NC State and NEVER got ejected.

* Despite some of the worst profanity and treatment that any college coach in America can imagine, Karl Hess has never ejected Coach K from a basketball game.

WTVD’s Mark Armstrong tweeted tonight:

Don’t know if it’s been reported elsewhere, but Debbie Yow confirms she’s had a convo with Swofford about the ejections. Said ‘more to come’

and then just followed up with the following:

NCSU issues statement saying in part that ACC has agreed to issue a statement tonight.

Joe Giglio has an update at the N&O tonight at this link but has followed up with more updates on his twitter account.

From @jpgiglio —

N.C. State AD Debbie Yow says the school has asked for an explanation for the Corchiani/Gugliotta incident but has not yet received one

Yow said: ‘We want to make sure our fans are being treated fairly.’

More from Yow: ‘I’ve been an AD for 21 years, 18 in the ACC, and I have never seen two people ejected like that.’

According to the ACC handbook, Hess has the power to eject fans, but also has to provide an explanation

If Hess interpreted the ACC handbook literally, Cameron would be empty 2 seconds into every game

Wasn’t picking on Duke there, just making a point … Hess is one of the best officials in the ACC but he made a mistake today

From Giglio’s article —

After the game, Corchiani was still looking for a reason why Hess stopped the game and asked him and Gugliotta to leave.

“I’d like to know why it happened,” Corchiani said. “You could hear us, there’s no doubt you could hear us, and we said something about three or four different times but not once did we use profanity and we never threatened him.”

Corchiani, who played point guard for the Wolfpack from 1988 to 1991 and is one of three players in ACC history with 1,000 assists, said he attended the game with his wife, Stewart, and 11-year-old daughter, Annabelle. Gugliotta, an All-ACC forward for the Wolfpack, played from 1989 to ’92 and was an NBA All-Star with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1997.

“We were just fans, cheering and yelling like everybody else,” Corchiani said.

After Hess’ confrontation with Corchiani and Gugliotta, N.C. State briefly cut into what was a 20-point Florida State lead in the second half. Scott Wood was fouled by Deividas Dulkys at the 6:40 mark, before Hess went to the scorer’s table, on a 3-point attempt.

The atmosphere in the arena was noticeably livelier after Corchiani and Gugliotta walked off the court and watched the remainder of the game from the tunnel leading to the N.C. State locker room.

Wood made all three of his free throws and followed up on the next trip with a 3-pointer to cut FSU’s advantage to 59-47 but that was as close as the Pack would get the rest of the way.

“If State would have come back and won, for me it would have been worth it,” Corchiani said.

Hess declined comment to an Associated Press reporter after the game. ACC head of officials John Clougherty also declined comment on Saturday afternoon.

N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow was trying to get an explanation from the conference on Saturday about the incident and was waiting to hear back from the league before commenting.

I just received the following email from Debbie Yow

Subject: Statement from NC State Director of Athletics Deborah A. Yow

Statement from NC State Director of Athletics Deborah A. Yow

“Throughout this afternoon and evening, I have been seeking clarification from the ACC office regarding the reason for the ejection of two fans today during our men’s basketball game against Florida State. I have spoken to Commissioner John Swofford and Karl Hicks, Associate Commissioner for Basketball Operations, regarding our concerns and our need for clarification as to why this occurred. We expect fair treatment of our fans at State athletic events.

Although ACC rules prohibit coaches, players and administrators from publicly taking exception to officiating, the ACC Office has agreed to issue a statement regarding the ejections and the circumstances surrounding them later tonight. We will not have further comment regarding this situation until we have had a chance to review the statement issued by the league.”

Grandstanding, plain and simple. The Coach K and Dookie student comparison will get repeated over and over, but is absolutely the correct comparison.

Someone refresh my memory… when Painter got iced at the line because of the FSU injury, was that before or after the ejection? If a guy is hurt to the point that he has to receive treatment, isn’t he out of the game?

re: the Zo shove – Zo clearly got tripped during that play, right? So a missed call, some woofing from Zo, then the shove… am I right?

Maybe when watching games to check on players tendencies the head of the ACC officiating should look at HIS REF’S tendencies and address how piss poor they are at their job.

But I know I am living in a dream world.

  4. Rick 02/18/2012 at 8:26 PM #

I kind of have a crazy idea. The students should get tons of “big heads” of corch and googs and put halos on them for the next game.

That would be pretty friggin; hilarious.

It will serve Hess right if this little incident fires up our fan base. I hope next year, with our McDonalds all-Americans, we will look back at this incident as a pivotal point in our resurgence. As someone who tells my friends that the ACC has been rigged ever since Golenbock’s despicable book, it makes me want to say, “see, I wasn’t crazy.”

DYOW, have them sit down and watch the duke game with you and explain that CRAP!!!!!

“DYOW, have them sit down and watch the duke game with you and explain that CRAP!!!!!”

    YES.

  8. BJD95 02/18/2012 at 8:33 PM #

Certainly sounds like nothing will happen. At the very least, Hess should be suspended and Natali fired. I am flabbergasted.

  9. BJD95 02/18/2012 at 8:34 PM #

NO statement can possibly be sufficient. This is patently ridiculous. And nobody is saying squat about Natali’s assault.

  10. NCStatePride 02/18/2012 at 8:35 PM #

For the record…. yes, I am feeling pretty smug and 100% justified with my previous statements (and article) on the sub-par performance of officiating basketball games, particularly through and NC State fan’s eyes.

  11. Rick 02/18/2012 at 8:36 PM #

    BJD,
I just looked at it and it was nothing as far as I can tell. He was just separating two players that were jawing at each other.

  12. NCStatePride 02/18/2012 at 8:38 PM #

“Maybe when watching games to check on players tendencies the head of the ACC officiating should look at HIS REF’S tendencies and address how piss poor they are at their job.”

You mean similar to what was modeled here?

  13. Old MacDonald 02/18/2012 at 8:40 PM #

How in the world does it “sound like nothing will happen”?

It sounds like the opposite to me.

  14. BJD95 02/18/2012 at 8:43 PM #

Sounds like they will make a statement “regretting” that Corch and Gugs were ejected but that officiating is a stressful and thankless job, etc. We will see.

Maybe I’m still just too pissed and jaded to see straight. Been fuming nonstop for 5+ hours.

  15. Rick 02/18/2012 at 8:45 PM #

    OMD
I expect a full on cover up from the ACC.
Some crap about Hess being within his rights and he should not have to take abuse. And then on Tuesday he will foul out our entire starting 5 before the first TV time out.

With all of these lawyers on the board, anyone know if they would really have a “freedom of speech” case against Hess?

I would love to them sue him for the publicity alone.

  16. LRM 02/18/2012 at 8:47 PM #

We can all relax, Annabelle is on the case.

  17. NCStatePride 02/18/2012 at 8:49 PM #

A true Carolina-styled DENY, DENY, DENY!

  18. Old MacDonald 02/18/2012 at 8:50 PM #

No there is no free speech issue. For lots of reasons I won’t bore people with.

  19. Rick 02/18/2012 at 8:50 PM #

“We can all relax, Annabelle is on the case.”

Isn’t that like having Karl Hess ref an NCSU game?

  20. Rick 02/18/2012 at 8:51 PM #

“No there is no free speech issue. For lots of reasons I won’t bore people with.”

Thanks, I know nothing about the law so I thought I would ask.

  21. BJD95 02/18/2012 at 8:53 PM #

How does a guy like Hess still have a job? He’s remarkably awful. Any middle school ref could do a better job.

Figures he was the guy who missed that blatant Cuse goaltend.

  22. Howler 02/18/2012 at 8:58 PM #

My law degree is from Chapel Hill (3 years inside the enemy’s camp) so I will not opine except to say Hess indeed does suck. He would have no case for defamation because the truth is always a defense.

  23. SaccoV 02/18/2012 at 9:01 PM #

I will give Hess credit for one thing … he has made himself into the most hated official of 2012, even surpassing Ayers in my opinion. Congrats Karl … it’s an honor well-deserved!

  24. YogiNC 02/18/2012 at 9:01 PM #

Actually there IS a free speech issue here. NOTHING can usurp first amendment rights except as provided by past court decisions. Usually these involve utterances such as yelling fire in a crowded building, anything that creates mayhem, or uttering threats. I seriously doubt that they did anything that could preclude them from enforcing their right to free speech if what they were doing was voicing an opinion. I’d light the ACC and Hess up. He’d have to officiate 3 games a day to pay for that lawsuit.

  25. TruthBKnown Returns 02/18/2012 at 9:03 PM #

If nothing else comes of this, I’d like to see this lead to more accountability from referees about their conduct during games. It seems they can call games any old way they want and never have to explain any of the sometimes puzzling calls that they make.

    Edit: Or DON’T make.

And the DREAM result to come from this would be for Hess to NEVER EVER officiate an NC State game EVER again.
