Top recruit’s mom upstages commitment on national TV

Don’t know if you saw this on Thursday night…but, we had to share it with you.

As players are wont to do, Geismar (La.) Dutchtown High safety Landon Collins, one of the nation’s top defensive back prospects, made his commitment on live TV during the annual Under Armour High School Football All America Game. Collins, who is the number 15 overall recruit in the nation according to Rivals.com, chose to attend Alabama over in-state Louisiana State.

That’s when things got weird. Rather than offer excited words of support, Collins’ mother dropped a “Geaux Tigers” chant and other pseudo attacks against her own son, all of which followed on some initial eye rolls which could have been taken straight off a mid-90s Jerry Springer set. The entire scenario was surreal.

Officially, this is what Collins’ as yet publicly unidentified mother said about her son’s decision:

“I feel like LSU is a better place for him to be. LSU Tigers, number one. Go Tigers.”

Ouch. As noted by Kegs ‘N Eggs blogger Adam Kramer, it’s almost impossible to imagine just how awkward things might get on the Collins homefront as soon as soon as everyone is back from what was supposed to be a joyous celebration, and pseudo coronation, of Collins’ supreme football talent.

Then again, Collins’ commitment is only a verbal one … for now. Anyone else think that Mama Collins might still have some lobbying to do before national signing day?

I read elsewhere that Collins’ girlfriend is currently attending Alabama already. When I was 18 I know what was on my mind….and it wasn’t what momma was saying.

When I was 17, 18 years old, sometimes what my Mom said would be the exact opposite of what I would actually do.

And that was despite the fact that my Mom never upstaged me and acted like a b**h like that to make a fool of herself. The old adage about keeping quiet in order to not remove all doubt comes to mind.

    That was poor.

She’s pretty hot though. Just sayin’.

    Hilarious, but pathetic, too.

I can’t wait until he goes on national tv with his folks to announce his engagement.

Maybe LSU offered Mom a house and Bama just came up with a car…

I’ll ask the obvious question. Where is Dad in this picture? Not Collins’ fault, but there needs to be a strong male role model in the picture, not the Cam Newton dad type, but someone to support him.

Not gonna jump to conclusions on this one. When I was that kid’s age, my folks’ opinion of my decisions was very important to me. I didn’t always listen to them, but in most cases I should have.

I realize that the kid’s Mom could have handled it better (read: not in the public eye), but without knowing her motivations I have a hard time faulting her otherwise. I don’t know many mothers that would be particularly happy for their kid to follow a girlfriend to an out of state school (presuming that to be accurate).

On the other hand, maybe acting like a nutjob is her norm and it was this that factored into his decision to get the hell away, at least partially.

… shades of LD2 in the works here, perhaps ?????

We all know how that worked out.

    Mom’s got no class.

I didn’t think she showed no class. The guy asked what she thought, and she said she thinks LSU would be a better fit for him, then showed that she was a LSU fan. If my mom had done that to me I would have laughed.
